BACKGROUND: For more than 20 years virtual realities (VR) have been successfully used in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders. The most important advantages of VR are the high ecological validity of virtual environments, the entire controllability of virtual stimuli in the virtual environment and the capability to induce the sensation of being in the virtual environment instead of the physical environment. VRs provide the opportunity to face the user with stimuli and situations which are not available or too risky in reality. Despite these advantages VR-based applications have

A man presenting in his 50s, following conviction for a non-violent crime, to forensic psychiatric services, and then to a neuropsychiatry service with an unusual presentation of psychosis: second person auditory hallucinations, grandiose delusions and somatic delusions. Detailed collateral and family history revealed a background of progressive cognitive deficit and a family history of motor neuron disease. MRI of the brain revealed asymmetrical parieto-occipital volume loss and genetic testing demonstrated a pathogenic expansion of the chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9ORF72) gene consis

This article provides an overview of the development of forensic psychiatry in the Netherlands from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. The first part addresses the ways forensic psychiatry established itself in the period 1870-1925 and focuses on its interrelatedness with forensic practice, psychiatry's professionalization, the role of the government, the influence of the so-called New Direction in legal thinking and (Italian and French) anthropology of crime, and the debates among physicians as well as between psychiatrists and legal experts on the proper approach of menta

In contrast to other areas of psychiatry, little work has been done on the history of forensic psychiatry, and such work is especially scarce regarding the first half of the 19th century, when forensic psychiatry began to develop together with the neurosciences. One newly discovered archival source bears immediate witness to the genesis of forensic psychiatry and is presented for the first time in this study. That source helps us to better understand, in particular, one of the most important cases in 19th-century German forensic psychiatry - namely, that of Johann Christian Woyzeck, the murder

The paper presents the results of examination of 110 alcoholic patients who have committed criminal actions and were recognized as irresponsible at forensic examination. It was established that wide spectrum of mental disorders were present in such cases--from superacute psychotic states (15 patients) and acute disorders (49) to chronic psychoses (33) and encephalopathy (13). According to clinical manifestations mental disorders correspond in such cases to reactions of exogenic type. In contrast to general medical departments where patients with alcoholic delirium prevail, the studied sample o

2,533 persons charged for serious criminal offences during the years 1980-93 were submitted for forensic psychiatric examination. The purpose of the examinations was to decide whether the person, because of his or her mental state at the time of the offence, was liable or not to prosecution. The three most common criminal offences were murder, arson resulting in potential murder and serious cases of sexual offence like paedophilia. There was a sharp increase in the number of forensically examined persons from 1980 to 1993. This reflects the increasing crime rates in Norway, particularly as reg

The objectives of this paper are to develop insights into the mind of the terrorist, to conduct a review of health impacts on the health of populations, especially from the point of view of mental health impacts caused by terrorist attacks and to discern the role to be played by forensic psychiatry in emergencies caused by terrorist actions. These objectives are developed at the population level and at the individual level from the point of view of a description of the terrorist and of victim's need for forensic intervention and representation. On entrance, the paper starts with a general fram

Long-term institutionalization of the forensic psychiatry patient population places a psychological burden on patients and family members as well as a financial burden on the health care system at large. Although electroconvulsive therapy is a well-established tool for patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, it is infrequently used in the forensic setting. This review serves to demonstrate an example of electroconvulsive therapy in combination with clozapine as a means of reducing length of hospitalization in a forensic psychiatric patient. Furthermore, this review will discuss factor

This paper examines the implications of the transition from ICD-10 to ICD-11 for the diagnosis of personality disorders in forensic psychiatric evaluations. The ICD-11 introduces a dimensional approach, replacing the previous categorical system with a focus on severity and maladaptive personality traits. This shift addresses longstanding criticisms of the ICD-10, such as underdiagnosis, diagnostic instability, and lack of scientific validity. The new model classifies personality disorders by severity (mild, moderate, severe) and five trait domains, enhancing clinical nuance but also introducin

PURPOSE: Identification of potential shared primary psychoprophylaxis and crime prevention is measured by analyzing the rate of commitments for patients-subjects to forensic examination.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The statistic trial is a retrospective, document-based study. The statistical lot consists of 770 initial examination reports performed and completed during the whole year 2007, primarily analyzed in order to summarize the data within the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, Bucharest, Romania (INML), with one of the group variables being 'particularities of the psychiatric patient hi

BACKGROUND: Studies in forensic psychiatry indicate that persons in prison and psychologically disturbed sexual offenders have a high degree of traumatic experiences. But less is known about other specific risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which the diagnoses and traumata of sexual offenders differ from those of non-sexual offenders.
METHOD: 51-male, German, forensic psychiatric patients were examined. Various self-evaluation questionnaires served to ascertain dissociative and general psychopathology and interpersonal problems.
RESULTS: No significant corre

AIMS: to assess referrals to a prison liaison service of regional forensic services in Auckland.
METHODS: data on forensic psychiatric referrals from Auckland prisons 1 October 1989 to 30 September 1990 were collected. This was the first year of the service.
RESULTS: there were 127 forensic psychiatric referrals in the period. The characteristic profile of such a case was that of a 28.5 year old male, unemployed remanded of Maori ethnic background. The commonest charge was nonsexual assault together with a prominent history of polysubstance misuse. Schizophrenia was the most frequent diagnos

This study describes the prevalence of adverse events and length of stay in forensic psychiatric patients with and without a restriction order. Detailed clinical and administrative information from medical records and written court decisions was gathered retrospectively from admission until discharge for a Swedish population-based, consecutive cohort of forensic psychiatric patients (n=125). The median length of stay for the whole cohort was 951 days, but patients with a restriction order stayed in hospital almost five times as long as patients without. Restriction orders were related to convi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Forensic psychiatry has experienced a significant development in the last few decades. Several mechanisms underlie this shift, including deinstitutionalization of mental health patients and extraordinary progress in neurosciences, imaging technologies and psychology, just no name a few. This development has put in evidence specific needs for training and education. A review and comparison of forensic psychiatry training in several European countries, U.S.A. and Brazil is made.
METHODS: A mixed approach was used, including a) systematic literature review (Pubmed search, 19

Suicidal modes of behaviour are discussed in their forensic-psychiatric aspects, and the problems of a typical case are presented as an example. As in other medical disciplines, questions of recognizability and correct treatment of pathological disorders are of particular interest from the legal point of view. The analysis of suicidal modes of behaviour in larger populations can admittedly demonstrate more or less typical patterns, but reliable parameters for individual prognosis are not available. For this reason, suicidal tendencies in the individual are in principle not recognizable. A stan

Patient involvement in routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is vital for collaborative treatment and understanding differences between patient and clinician perspectives. This study assessed the agreement between patient and clinician ratings using the Instrument for Forensic Treatment Evaluation (IFTE) and its self-report version (IFTE-S) in high-security forensic psychiatric centers in Flanders, Belgium. Results showed concordance in domains like protective behavior and resocialization skills, but patients rated their problematic behavior as less severe than clinicians did. Item-level analyses r
