Evaluation of air pollution-related risks for Austrian mountain forests.

The present paper describes air pollution status and evaluation of risks related to effects of phytotoxic pollutants in the Austrian mountain forests. The results are based on Austrian networks (Forest Inventory, Forest Damage Monitoring System, Austrian Bioindicator Grid), the Austrian sample plots of the European networks of the UN-ECE (ICP Forests, Level I and Level II) and interdisciplinary research approaches. Based on the monitoring data and on modelling and mapping of Critical Thresholds, the evaluation of risk factors was possible. Cause-effect relationships between air pollution and t

Landscape context constrains climate regulation recovery in Amazonian secondary forests.

Primary (PF) and secondary forests (SF) differ in structure, composition, and biophysical functioning. However, how these differences influence climate regulation across Amazonian landscapes remains unclear. Using annual climate and land cover data and a spatial mixed-effects framework, we quantified PF-SF contrasts in precipitation, evapotranspiration (ET), and land surface temperature (LST) across fractional forest cover gradients and SF successional stages in three Amazonian regions: central (CBA), eastern (EBA), and southern (SBA). PF-SF contrasts varied markedly among climate variables, r

Amazonian understory forests change phosphorus acquisition strategies under elevated CO2.

The potential for the Amazon forest to continue functioning as a carbon (C) sink strongly depends on soil nutrient availability, particularly phosphorus (P), and on plants' ability to adjust nutrient acquisition strategies. However, limited experimental evidence constrains the mechanistic representation of nutrient-carbon interactions in climate change models. Here, we conducted an experiment in a P-depleted Amazonian understory forest, increasing atmospheric CO₂ in-situ by approximately 300 ppm using open-top chambers. We show that elevated CO₂ (eCO₂) induced contrasting responses by roots al

Urban forests as carbon reservoirs: comparative assessment across Delhi-NCR.

Rapid urbanization and population growth in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) have resulted in the loss of green cover, deterioration of air quality, and intensification of the urban heat island effect. Urban forests serve as important nature-based solutions by acting as carbon (C) sinks; however, site-specific information on biomass and C storage in semi-arid tropical megacities remains limited. This study assessed tree biomass, C density, and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) across four urban forest sites in Delhi-NCR: Sanjay Van, Mandir Marg Ridge Forest, AcSIR Headquarters (Ghaziaba

Source limitation drives slow compositional recovery in tropical secondary forests.

Tropical forests can recover diversity, structure, and function rapidly after disturbance. However, plant compositional recovery remains incomplete even after many decades, and the reasons for this lag are poorly understood. We investigated the roles of source, dispersal, and establishment limitation in affecting compositional recovery in Costa Rican forests using long-term data on species composition of trees, seeds, seedlings, and saplings, along with measurements of herbivory and leaf pathogen damage in seedlings and saplings from old-growth (OG) and second-growth (SG) forest plots. We clas

Storms Are an Important Driver of Change in Tropical Forests.

Tropical forest dynamics and composition have changed over recent decades, but the proximate drivers of these changes remain unclear. Investigations into these trends have focused on increasing drought stress, CO2, temperature, and fires, whereas convective storms are generally overlooked. We argue that existing literature provides clear support for the importance of storms as drivers of forest change. We reanalyze the largest plot-based study of tropical forest carbon dynamics to show that lightning frequency-an indicator of storm activity-strongly predicts forest carbon storage and residence

Fast segmentation of kidney components using random forests and ferns.

PURPOSE: This paper studies the feasibility of developing a fast and accurate automatic kidney component segmentation method. The proposed method segments the kidney into four components: renal cortex, renal column, renal medulla, and renal pelvis. METHOD: In this article, we have proposed a highly efficient approach which strategically combines random forests and random ferns methods to segment the kidney into four components: renal cortex, renal column, renal medulla, and renal pelvis. The proposed method is designed following a coarse-to-fine strategy. The initial segmentation applies rand

Detecting and classifying linear structures in mammograms using random forests.

Detecting and classifying curvilinear structure is important in many image interpretation tasks. We focus on the challenging problem of detecting such structure in mammograms and deciding whether it is normal or abnormal. We adopt a discriminative learning approach based on a Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet representation and random forest classification. We present results of a quantitative comparison of our approach with three leading methods from the literature and with learning-based variants of those methods. We show that our new approach gives significantly better results than any of the other

Epiphytic lichens as biomonitors of atmospheric pollution in Slovenian forests.

Two country-wide surveys using epiphytic lichens as biomonitors of atmospheric pollution carried out during 2000 and 2001 in Slovenia were compared with surveys in 1991 and 1992. In the first survey, epiphytic lichen cover was studied in more than 500 plots of the 4 x 4 km national grid carried out within the framework of forest decline inventories. In the second survey, the epiphytic lichen Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl., was collected on a 16 x 16 km bioindication grid and analysed for S, N, As, Br, Ce, Cd, Cr, K, La, Mo, Rb, Sb, Th, U and Zn contents. Only 'forested area' sampling points wer

Lost in a rain forest.

A 40-year-old soldier in Guyana consulted at the end of December for skin lesions that had been developing for several weeks after he was lost overnight in the equatorial forest, near the village of Saul. He was bitten by numerous mosquitoes during the night and as he crossed marshy areas. When he arrived at the clinic he had 23 leishmaniasis sites visible.

Kyasanur forest disease.

In the spring of 1957, an outbreak of severe disease was documented in people living near the Kyasanur forest in Karnataka state, India, which also affected wild nonhuman primates. Collection of samples from dead animals and the use of classical virological techniques led to the isolation of a previously unrecognized virus, named Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV), which was found to be related to the Russian spring-summer encephalitis (RSSE) complex of tick-borne viruses. Further evaluation found that KFD, which frequently took the form of a hemorrhagic syndrome, differed from most other RS

Institutional Arrangements and Collaborative Forest Governance in Gargeda State Forest, Western Ethiopia.

Understanding forest governance requires examining the interactions among stakeholders and the institutional arrangements that shape resource management. This study investigates collaborative forest governance in the Gargeda State Forest, Western Ethiopia, focusing on the institutional arrangement, social interaction, and logistical challenges that constrain effective management. Network analysis, conducted with Gephi 0.10.1, was used to map and visualize relationships among government agencies, NGOs, and local social groups. The resulting network comprises 27 nodes and 55 edges, with a modera

Biogeographic history and megafauna shape frugivory interaction networks across equatorial forests.

Frugivory is essential for the maintenance of tropical forests, influencing seed movement, spatial structure, and ecosystem functioning. Although frugivory interactions are well documented at local scales, we still know relatively little about how network structure varies across biogeographic regions, particularly in equatorial lowland forests. In this study, we compare frugivory networks in lowland forests in the Guiana Shield (South America), Malaysia (Southeast Asia), and Central Africa (Gabon and Cameroon). Because these sites occur at similar latitudes, they provide a useful setting to ex

Higher carbon storage in primary than secondary boreal forests in Sweden.

Boreal forests provide considerable global land carbon storage and uptake, but they are being rapidly transformed to managed secondary forests, with poorly quantified implications for ecosystem carbon storage. Here we present data from extensive mapping and field inventories of carbon storage in primary forests in Sweden and use multiple methods to show that primary forests store ~72% (70 to 74% across methods) more carbon than managed secondary forests in vegetation, deadwood, soils, and harvested wood products combined. Soils constitute both the largest carbon store and the largest differenc

Soil Respiration Dynamics and Environmental Controls Across Montane Forests of Nepal.

Soil respiration (R S) represents a major process of release of carbon dioxide (CO2) from soil to atmospheric carbon pools. Measurements of soil respiration help to understand the dynamics of carbon in ecosystems. This study examines the soil respiration rate and the effect of environmental variables in different forests along elevation gradient. This study was conducted in three distinct montane forest types distributed along an elevational gradient in the middle mountain region of Nepal, namely Schima-Castanopsis Forest, Oak Laurel Forest, and Evergreen Oak Forest. In each forest type, 10 ci
