Associations between residential fossil fuel combustion and indoor concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes in Canadian homes.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing attention on the effects of residential fossil fuel combustion, particularly the use of natural gas or oil, on indoor air quality. Given the prevalent use of natural gas in Canadian homes, understanding its influence on indoor air quality is important. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated associations between indoor levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde with potential emission sources and other influencing factors in 344 homes in four Canadian cities. METHODS: Using mixed models and general linear models, we evalu

Historical red-lining is associated with fossil fuel power plant siting and present-day inequalities in air pollutant emissions.

Stationary sources of air pollution are disproportionately located in communities of colour, but the causes for this disparity are unclear. Here we assess whether racialized appraisals of investment risk ('red-lining') undertaken by the US federal Home Owners' Loan Corporation in the 1930s influenced the subsequent siting of fossil fuel power plants. Across 8,871 neighbourhoods in 196 US urban areas, we observed a stepwise correlation between risk grade, number of power plants and cumulative quantity of power plant emissions upwind and within 5 km. Controlling for pre-existing power plants, ne

Inhibition of progesterone receptor activity in recombinant yeast by soot from fossil fuel combustion emissions and air particulate materials.

Numerous environmental pollutants have been detected for estrogenic activity by interacting with the estrogen receptor, but little information is available about their interactions with the progesterone receptor. In this study, emission samples generated by fossil fuel combustion (FFC) and air particulate material (APM) collected from an urban location near a traffic line in a big city of China were evaluated to interact with the human progesterone receptor (hPR) signaling pathway by examining their ability to interact with the activity of hPR expressed in yeast. The results showed that the so

Quantifying the contributions of fossil fuel emissions and East Asian summer monsoon to Chinese regional background atmosphere by tree-ring Δ14C.

Four time series of annual tree-ring Δ14C from Changbai Mountain (CBM), Nanwutai (NWT), Lin'an (LAN), and Dinghu Mountain (DHM) regional background sites in China spanning the last ca. 70 years were measured, with the objectives to reveal their temporal-spatial variations and to quantify the contributions of regional fossil fuel CO2 (CO2ff) emissions and East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). The temporal-spatial Δ14C variations at these sites are mainly influenced by atmospheric nuclear tests and fossil fuel emissions. The decreases in the main Δ14C peaks in 1964 from high latitudinal site to low

Spatial distribution of fossil fuel-derived CO2 using radiocarbon measurement in South Korea influenced by regional characteristics and human activities.

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is one of the most precise analytical tools for tracing fossil fuel-derived CO2 in the atmosphere. In this study, deciduous tree leaves were collected from Gyeongju and neighboring cities in South Korea to analyze the radiocarbon (Δ14C) characteristics of atmospheric CO2. The measured Δ14C values were used to estimate fossil fuel-derived CO2 concentrations (CO2_ff, ppm) for comparison among the different regions. The sampling locations were expanded incrementally from 2018 to 2024, with 12 sampling sites in 2024. A comparison of Δ14C and CO2_ff revealed clea

High-Resolution Mapping of Fossil Fuel CO2 Using Plant Radiocarbon and Bayesian Inversion: Toward a City-Scale Emission Audit.

Accurate quantification of fossil fuel carbon dioxide (CO2ff) emissions is essential for evaluating mitigation progress and informing climate policy. However, urban-scale inventories often face significant uncertainties, highlighting the urgent need for robust, independent validation. Here we present a high-resolution mapping of CO2ff emissions in Shenzhen using radiocarbon (14C) observations integrated with Bayesian inversion. We collected 70 herbaceous plant samples across the city in 2022 on a 5 × 5 km2 grid to capture spatial gradients in CO2ff. The plant 14C-derived CO2ff signals were ass

Global partitioning of NOx sources using satellite observations: relative roles of fossil fuel combustion, biomass burning and soil emissions.

We use space-based observations of NO2 columns from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) to derive monthly top-down NOx emissions for 2000 via inverse modeling with the GEOS-CHEM chemical transport model. Top-down NOx sources are partitioned among fuel combustion (fossil fuel and biofuel), biomass burning and soils by exploiting the spatio-temporal distribution of remotely sensed fires and a priori information on the location of regions dominated by fuel combustion. The top-down inventory is combined with an a priori inventory to obtain an optimized a posteriori estimate of the relati

Tree rings record fossil-fuel CO2 emission reduction and reveal structural responses in street trees during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Air pollution ranks among the top causes of premature death worldwide. In cities, air pollution mitigation depends on curbing emissions and fostering ecosystem services, particularly through tree planting. Whereas the role of urban trees in air pollution mitigation is well established, trees' responses to reduced air pollution stress remain poorly quantified. Air pollution can limit trees' benefits by constraining stomatal conductance, photosynthesis, and xylogenesis. This study assessed the impacts of acute air pollution reduction during the COVID-19 lockdowns on Tipuana tipu trees growing in

Reductions in NO2 burden over north equatorial Africa from decline in biomass burning in spite of growing fossil fuel use, 2005 to 2017.

Socioeconomic development in low- and middle-income countries has been accompanied by increased emissions of air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides [NOx: nitrogen dioxide (NO2) + nitric oxide (NO)], which affect human health. In sub-Saharan Africa, fossil fuel combustion has nearly doubled since 2000. At the same time, landscape biomass burning-another important NOx source-has declined in north equatorial Africa, attributed to changes in climate and anthropogenic fire management. Here, we use satellite observations of tropospheric NO2 vertical column densities (VCDs) and burned area to identi

Significant contributions of combustion-related NH3 and non-fossil fuel NOx to elevation of nitrogen deposition in southwestern China over past five decades.

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) emissions and deposition have been increasing over past decades. However, spatiotemporal variations of N deposition levels and major sources remain unclear in many regions, which hinders making strategies of emission mitigation and evaluating effects of elevated N deposition. By investigating moss N contents and δ15 N values in southwestern (SW) China in 1954-1964, 1970-1994, and 2005-2015, we reconstructed fluxes and source contributions of atmospheric ammonium ( NH 4 + ) and nitrate ( NO 3 - ) deposition and evaluated their historical changes. The impact of China-US technological innovation, transportation, and power generation on energy, environment, and economic growth sustainability.

China and the United States have the highest demand for fossil fuel energy for transportation and power generation, which promotes growth while also damaging the environment. Policymakers, and environmental scientists, are increasingly interested in understanding key strategies to improve energy efficiency to mitigate fossil fuel energy demand and sustain the environment and growth. In this context, this study uses augmented mean groups (AMG) and common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG) estimators to reveal the impact of China-US technological innovation, transportation infrastructure, and

Long-range chemical sensitivity in the sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectra of substituted thiophenes.

Thiophenes are the simplest aromatic sulfur-containing compounds and are stable and widespread in fossil fuels. Regulation of sulfur levels in fuels and emissions has become and continues to be ever more stringent as part of governments' efforts to address negative environmental impacts of sulfur dioxide. In turn, more effective removal methods are continually being sought. In a chemical sense, thiophenes are somewhat obdurate and hence their removal from fossil fuels poses problems for the industrial chemist. Sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy provides key information on thiophenic c

Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration as fuel gauge.

Climate change skeptics like to point to the high atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration in paleo records as "proof" of the exaggeration of the climate change agenda. Instead of debunking these arguments, the present paper represents a thought experiment that considers the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration in the past as a proxy for fossil fuel reserves and interprets the contemporary rise in carbon dioxide concentration as a fuel gauge to estimate the exhaustion of the remaining fossil fuel reserves under different energy consumption scenarios. The resulting conclusion is that the da

Harnessing algal biomass for renewable energy and biofuel production: Current strategies and future insights.

The energy crisis and environmental complications worldwide are due to the depletion of fossil fuels. The continuous utilization of fossil fuels leads to air pollution, emission of greenhouse gases and global warming. Biofuels are promising alternatives to fossil fuels and are eco-friendly. Besides using agricultural raw materials, algal biomass is a neutral alternative in several aspects. Due to its chemical constituents and sustainability, algae are a pivotal and scalable feedstock for biorefineries. This review evaluates the potential of using algal biomass to produce a variety of biofuels

Transforming carbon dioxide into jet fuel using an organic combustion-synthesized Fe-Mn-K catalyst.

With mounting concerns over climate change, the utilisation or conversion of carbon dioxide into sustainable, synthetic hydrocarbons fuels, most notably for transportation purposes, continues to attract worldwide interest. This is particularly true in the search for sustainable or renewable aviation fuels. These offer considerable potential since, instead of consuming fossil crude oil, the fuels are produced from carbon dioxide using sustainable renewable hydrogen and energy. We report here a synthetic protocol to the fixation of carbon dioxide by converting it directly into aviation jet fuel

Indoor air pollution and its impact on children under five years old in Bangladesh.

UNLABELLED: Indoor air concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and dust particles were measured for 49 biomass and 46 fossil fuel users in urban slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The health impacts of these pollutants were assessed on 65 and 51 children under five years old from families who use biomass and fossil fuel as main source of energy, respectively. Mean concentrations of CO were found to be significantly higher in biomass fuel users (P = 0.010), while geometric mean concentrations of benzene, xylene, toluene,

Tracing fossil-based plastics, chemicals and fertilizers production in China.

Phasing down fossil fuels is crucial for climate mitigation. Even though 80-90% of fossil fuels are used to provide energy, their use as feedstock to produce plastics, fertilizers, and chemicals, is associated with substantial CO2 emissions. However, our understanding of hard-to-abate chemical production remains limited. Here we developed a chemical process-based material flow model to investigate the non-energy use of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions in China. Results show in 2017, the chemical industry used 0.18 Gt of coal, 88.8 Mt of crude oil, and 12.9 Mt of natural gas as feedstock, constit
