Fractal Dimension Analysis in Neurological Disorders: An Overview.

Fractal analysis has emerged as a powerful tool for characterizing irregular and complex patterns found in the nervous system. This characterization is typically applied by estimating the fractal dimension (FD), a scalar index that describes the topological complexity of the irregular components of the nervous system, both at the macroscopic and microscopic levels, that may be viewed as geometric fractals. Moreover, temporal properties of neurophysiological signals can also be interpreted as dynamic fractals. Given its sensitivity for detecting changes in brain morphology, FD has been explored

Fractal and fractional SIS model for syphilis data.

This work studies the SIS model extended by fractional and fractal derivatives. We obtain explicit solutions for the standard and fractal formulations; for the fractional case, we study numerical solutions. As a real data example, we consider the Brazilian syphilis data from 2011 to 2021. We fit the data by considering the three variations of the model. Our fit suggests a recovery period of 11.6 days and a reproduction ratio (R0) equal to 6.5. By calculating the correlation coefficient (r) between the real data and the theoretical points, our results suggest that the fractal model presents a h

Fractal geometry applied to the analysis of cervix biopsy.

BACKGROUND: the measurement of the spaces of occupation of irregular objects in the context of fractal geometry has had some applications at a cellular morphometric level, where characterizations of normality and disease have been established. The objective of the present study is to apply a fractal methodology to characterize images from cervical colposcopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: a mathematical and geometrical characterization of 67 cell samples was performed by measuring cellular fractal characteristics through the Box-Counting method, being nine normal, eight low-intraepithelial lesions,

Interfacial contact stiffness of fractal rough surfaces.

In this work we describe a theoretical model that predicts the interfacial contact stiffness of fractal rough surfaces by considering the effects of elastic and plastic deformations of the fractal asperities. We also develop an original test rig that simulates dovetail joints for turbo machinery blades, which can fine tune the normal contact load existing between the contacting surfaces of the blade root. The interfacial contact stiffness is obtained through an inverse identification method in which finite element simulations are fitted to the experimental results. Excellent agreement is obser

The fractal nature of human gastro-oesophageal reflux.

BACKGROUND: We are unaware of the analyses of time series data resulting from 24 h recordings of human gastric or oesophageal pH. As a result, we have no understanding of the quantitative changes in gastric or oesophageal acidity over time, the patterns that might characterize these changes, or the physiological significance of gastro-oesophageal reflux. AIM: To examine the time series for gastric and oesophageal pH. METHODS: Detrended fluctuation analysis and lag analysis were used to analyse data from 24 h recordings of oesophageal and gastric pH in five normal subjects and five subjects w

Fractal analysis of eye movements during reading.

We present a new method for the analysis of reading eye movements based on the methods of nonlinear dynamics. In this preliminary study, the eye movements of normal and abnormal readers were analyzed for evidence of chaotic, nonlinear dynamical behavior. Both power spectral density analysis and fractal dimension determination showed evidence of nonlinearity as manifest in chaotic behavior. The computed fractal dimension of the system's presumed attractor seemed directly related to qualitative assessment of reading ability. Representative subjects did not differ in a similar analysis of pursuit

The application of fractal analysis to mammographic tissue classification.

As a first step in determining the efficacy of using computers to assist in diagnosis of medical images, an investigation has been conducted which utilizes the patterns, or textures, in the images. To be of value, any computer scheme must be able to recognize and differentiate the various patterns. An obvious example of this in mammography is the recognition of tumorous tissue and non-malignant abnormal tissue from normal parenchymal tissue. We have developed a pattern recognition technique which uses features derived from the fractal nature of the image. Further, we are able to develop mathem

Fractality of sensations and the brain health: the theory linking neurodegenerative disorder with distortion of spatial and temporal scale-invariance and fractal complexity of the visible world.

The theory that ties normal functioning and pathology of the brain and visual system with the spatial-temporal structure of the visual and other sensory stimuli is described for the first time in the present study. The deficit of fractal complexity of environmental influences can lead to the distortion of fractal complexity in the visual pathways of the brain and abnormalities of development or aging. The use of fractal light stimuli and fractal stimuli of other modalities can help to restore the functions of the brain, particularly in the elderly and in patients with neurodegenerative disorde

Regular Metronome, Fractal Metronome, and Music for Parkinson Gait.

IMPORTANCE: Persons with Parkinson walk slowly, with short steps, reduced arm swing, and altered stride variability. Walking to a metronome or music may increase velocity, stride length, and cadence, yet few studies have directly compared the efficacy of these techniques. OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal auditory cue to improve Parkinson gait. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study was conducted among persons with Parkinson disease (using medication) and healthy older adult controls at University of Florida Applied Neuromechanics laboratory in 2017. Changes in gait in

Fractal-Based Analysis of Histological Features of Brain Tumors.

The structural complexity of brain tumor tissue represents a major challenge for effective histopathological diagnosis. Tumor vasculature is known to be heterogeneous, and mixtures of patterns are usually present. Therefore, extracting key descriptive features for accurate quantification is not a straightforward task. Several steps are involved in the texture analysis process where tissue heterogeneity contributes to the variability of the results. One of the interesting aspects of the brain lies in its fractal nature. Many regions within the brain tissue yield similar statistical properties a

Cortical Complexity in Anorexia Nervosa: A Fractal Dimension Analysis.

Fractal Dimension (FD) has shown to be a promising means to describe the morphology of cortical structures across different neurologic and psychiatric conditions, displaying a good sensitivity in capturing atrophy processes. In this study, we aimed at exploring the morphology of cortical areas by means of FD in 58 female patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) (38 currently underweight and 20 fully recovered) and 38 healthy controls (HC). All participants underwent high-resolution MRI. Surface extraction was completed using FreeSurfer, FD was computed using the calcFD toolbox. The whole cortex mea

Time series and fractal analyses of wheezing: a novel approach.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic Coronavirus Disease 2019, the world is in search of novel non-invasive methods for safer and early detection of lung diseases. The pulmonary pathological symptoms reflected through the lung sound opens a possibility of detection through auscultation and of employing spectral, fractal, nonlinear time series and principal component analyses. Thirty-five signals of vesicular and expiratory wheezing breath sound, subjected to spectral analyses shows a clear distinction in terms of time duration, intensity, and the number of frequency components. An investigation

Electroencephalographic Fractal Dimension in Healthy Ageing and Alzheimer's Disease.

Brain activity is complex; a reflection of its structural and functional organization. Among other measures of complexity, the fractal dimension is emerging as being sensitive to neuronal damage secondary to neurological and psychiatric diseases. Here, we calculated Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD) in resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 41 healthy controls (age: 20-89 years) and 67 Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients (age: 50-88 years), to investigate whether HFD is sensitive to brain activity changes typical in healthy aging and in AD. Additionally, we consid

Nonlinear analysis of EEG in major depression with fractal dimensions.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric mood disorder characterized by cognitive and functional impairments in attention, concentration, learning and memory. In order to investigate and understand its underlying neural activities and pathophysiology, EEG methodologies can be used. In this study, we estimated the nonlinearity features of EEG in MDD patients to assess the dynamical properties underlying the frontal and parietal brain activity. EEG data were obtained from 16 patients and 15 matched healthy controls. A wavelet-chaos methodology was used for data analysis. First, EEGs of s

Mouse activity across time scales: fractal scenarios.

In this work we devise a classification of mouse activity patterns based on accelerometer data using Detrended Fluctuation Analysis. We use two characteristic mouse behavioural states as benchmarks in this study: waking in free activity and slowwave sleep (SWS). In both situations we find roughly the same pattern: for short time intervals we observe high correlation in activity--a typical 1/f complex pattern--while for large time intervals there is anti-correlation. High correlation of short intervals (0.01 s to 2 s: waking state and 0.01 s to 0.1 s: SWS) is related to highly coordinated muscl

Retinal vascular fractal dimension is associated with cognitive dysfunction.

Fractal analysis is a method used to quantify the geometric branching complexity and density of retinal vessels. This study examined the relationship of retinal vascular fractal dimension and other retinal vascular parameters with cognitive dysfunction in an older Asian population. Subjects aged 60 years and older from the Singapore Malay Eye Study were selected for analysis. Retinal vascular fractal dimension (Df) and other quantitative retinal vascular parameters (branching angle, tortuosity, and caliber) were measured based on a standardized grading protocol from photographs of the retinal

Fractal-Fractional Modeling of the Delayed Dynamics of Mpox Disease.

Fractal-fractional calculus has evolved into a powerful mathematical framework for modeling and analyzing complex processes in bioengineering and biomedical sciences. This study introduces a delayed fractal-fractional Mpox model aimed at exploring the biological effects of memory and behavioral response lags on disease progression. Theoretical analysis establishes the non-negativity, existence, and boundedness of solutions, ensuring biological viability of model. Furthermore, basic reproduction number and equilibrium points are derived analytically, followed by a detailed stability analysis. B
