BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous messenger with pleiotropic functions, plays a role in cancer, including breast cancer (BC). Considering the high permeability and leakiness of NO across tissues and the increased levels of NO recently reported in exhaled breath and blood of patients with lung cancer, we explored exhaled NO levels in patients with BC in a future perspective of non-invasive cancer detection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fractional exhaled NO (FeNO) levels were detected in the breath of 192 women with BC and malignancy-free controls employing a widely used point-of-care (POC)-ba

OBJECTIVE: Impaired diabetic wound healing is one of the serious complications associated with diabetes. In patients with diabetes, this impairment is characterized by several physiological abnormalities such as metabolic changes, reduced collagen production, and diminished angiogenesis. We designed and developed a multimodal optical imaging system that can longitudinally monitor formation of new blood vessels, metabolic changes, and collagen deposition in a non-invasive, label-free manner.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The closure of a skin wound in (db/db) mice, which presents delayed wound

INTRODUCTION: Severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) is associated with multiple exacerbations. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), a biomarker of airway T2 inflammation, is known to be correlated with the risk of exacerbations. While the use of FeNO is well established to predict the therapeutic response to dupilumab (anti-IL-4/IL-13), it remains uncertain for biologics targeting the IL-5 pathway.
METHODS: We conducted an observational, retrospective, monocentric analysis of adults with SEA who started mepolizumab (anti-IL-5) or benralizumab (anti-IL-5R) between January 1, 2016 and December 31

This paper is a detailed methodological analysis of how the PBA approach was used as part of the DEFINE programme, in the planning and development of a behavioural intervention to support the use of Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) in informing asthma management in primary care asthma reviews. It offers detailed research insights into how using the PBA approach facilitates the development of methodologies for stakeholder engagement and intervention development research, in line with the recent MRC framework. Two stakeholder workshops were organised during the intervention planning and de

BACKGROUND: Chronic cough is one of the most common symptoms in childhood. Making a definite diagnosis is a challenge for all pediatricians especially in patients when cough is without an organic cause like in habit cough.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, all electronic outpatient charts of the Division of Allergology and Pneumology, between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2019 were reviewed in order to study all children with potential habit cough. All children underwent the following diagnostic algorithms, skin prick test (SPT), measurement of fractional exhaled nitric

Eosinophils are mediators of allergic inflammation and are implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous conditions including asthma, parasitic infections, neoplasms, hyper-eosinophilic syndromes, vasculitic disorders, and organ-specific conditions. Assessing eosinophilic inflammation is therefore important in establishing a diagnosis, in monitoring and assessing response to treatment, and in testing novel therapeutics. Clinical markers of atopy and eosinophilic inflammation include indirect tests such as lung function, exhaled breath condensate analysis, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, serum im

Asthma, the most common chronic respiratory disease, is characterized by variable symptoms, airflow limitation, and airway inflammation. Current management relies largely on a symptom-focused stepwise escalation approach, which often leads to suboptimal outcomes. This review examines how type 2 inflammatory biomarkers-blood eosinophils and fractional exhaled nitric oxide-can complement symptom-based assessment to optimize care pathways. We synthesize evidence for biomarker-guided management across 5 critical decision points: diagnostic triage, inhaled corticosteroid initiation and dose escalat

OBJECTIVE: Recently, a type 2 inflammation (T2) high endotype in bronchiectasis was identified. The fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and blood eosinophil count (BEC) are recognized as representative biomarkers of T2 inflammation. Herein, we investigate the clinical characteristics of T2-high endotype in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis patients classified by FeNO and BEC.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 164 bronchiectasis patients treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from December 2017 to July 2022. Clinical characteristics were analyzed after

The gas nitric oxide (NO) is produced in increased amounts in certain types of inflammatory responses and its presence in exhaled air can be demonstrated. The nitric oxide fraction in exhaled air (FeNO) is elevated in patients with asthma and lowered in the case of several other lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. The FeNO can be quickly measured in a non-invasive and reproducible manner: on-line if the patient (adult or child), having taken a deep breath in, breathes out with a low flow rate into the NO measuring device or off-line if the expired air is colle

BACKGROUND: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (Feno), used as a biomarker, is influenced by several factors including ethnicity. Normative data are essential for interpretation, and currently single cutoff values are used in children and adults.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Accounting for factors that influence Feno, (1) what are appropriate predicted and upper limit of normal (ULN) Feno values in an underserved population (First Nations Australians), (2) how do these values compare with age-based interpretive guidelines, and (3) what factors influence Feno and what is the size of the effect?

BACKGROUND: In addition to body anthropometrics, allergen sensitization has been shown to influence the levels of exhaled fractional nitric oxide (FeNO) in adults, but whether this relationship is valid also in younger age groups, how it compares to the fixed cut-off levels recommended for clinical practice, and relates to respiratory symptoms remains to be confirmed.
METHOD: FeNO, sensitization, respiratory symptoms, and spirometry were evaluated in 2054 adolescents taking part in the 16-year follow-up of the Swedish BAMSE birth cohort.
RESULTS: The median and upper limit of FeNO was relate

BACKGROUND: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a useful Type 2 biomarker for the diagnosis and management of asthma. Although allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) is an allergic disease characterized by Type 2 inflammation, the clinical significance of FeNO in asthma patients with ABPM has not been well investigated.
METHODS: The clinical characteristics of patients with and without comorbid ABPM were compared retrospectively using a cohort of patients with asthma. The cut-off values of FeNO for predicting asthma patients with ABPM were examined. We evaluated the associations betwe

UNLABELLED: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease characterized by local and systemic inflammation independently of the risk factor; during the exacerbations, such inflammation is accentuated and amplified. A practical inflammatory marker and one with an applicable predictive value in the follow-up has been sought. FeNO has shown an excellent performance in that respect within the context of asthma and has also been studied in tobacco-smoke COPD (COPD-TS). In Biomass-smoke COPD (COPD-BS), this, to our knowledge, has not been evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: To measure FeNO levels in

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with variable symptoms especially in children. Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has proved to be a marker of inflammation in the airways and has become a substantial part of clinical management of asthmatic children due to its potential to predict possible exacerbation and adjust the dose of inhalant corticosteroids.
OBJECTIVES: We analyzed potential factors that contribute to the variability of nitric oxide in various clinical and laboratory conditions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study population consisted of 222 asthmatic children and 27 healthy control

INTRODUCTION: The genetic determinants of fractional exhalation of nitric oxide (FeNO), a marker of lung inflammation, are understudied in Black individuals. Alpha globin (HBA) restricts nitric oxide signalling in arterial endothelial cells via interactions with nitric oxide synthase; however, its role in regulating the release of NO from respiratory epithelium is less well understood. We hypothesised that an HBA gene deletion, common among Black individuals, would be associated with higher FeNO.
METHODS: Healthy Black adults were enrolled at four study sites in North Carolina from 2005 to 20

Diisocyanates continue to be one of the most frequent causes of occupational asthma worldwide. They are still indispensable in industrial use as components of coatings, glues, and polyurethane foams. In Germany, respiratory diseases due to diisocyanates can be compensated by the statutory accident insurance (according to BK-Nr. 1315). The present case report shows a rare case of sensitization against diisocyanates verified by skin prick test and serological testing. Due to these findings, a modified inhalation test with an extremely low initial diisocyanate concentration in the laboratory was

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The global prevalence of asthma continues to increase; however, asthma remains under-diagnosed and under-treated. This results in a significant burden on the healthcare system and preventable patient morbidity and mortality. Over-diagnosis of asthma based on clinical history alone also complicates patient management. This heightens the importance of a prompt and accurate asthma diagnosis. Therefore, a review of the literature was performed regarding both objective diagnostic testing for asthma and using patient-reported outcome measures.
RECENT FINDINGS: The cornerstone of

INTRODUCTION: COPD is a heterogeneous disorder with varied phenotypes. We aimed to determine the prevalence of asthma history, peripheral eosinophilia and elevated FeNO levels along with the diagnostic utility of peripheral eosinophilia in identifying airway eosinophilic inflammation.
METHODS: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were analysed for the study period 2007-2010. Subjects aged ≥40 years with postbronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio <0.70 were included. Receiver operator curve analysis was performed for sensitivity analysis. A p value of <0.001 is considered statistically

Background & objectives Chronic airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness are typical pathophysiological features of cough variant asthma. However, the characteristics of airway inflammation and airflow restriction in individuals with non-asthmatic chronic cough and their guiding value of clinical treatment remain to be determined. This study explored the characteristics and correlations between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and impulse oscillometry (IOS) in non-asthmatic individuals with chronic cough. It also investigated the possibility of chronic cough developing into ast
