With an aging population, the osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) has become a constant concern for its physical and neurological complications, such as spinal kyphosis and refractory pains. Compared with traditional conservative treatments, the open surgery is more superior in some ways because of its direct decompression and correction. Various operation methods applying to different indications have been developed to deal with different fracture situations, including anterior, posterior, and combined surgery. In this review, we have concluded the latest developments of the su

BACKGROUND: Horizontal medial malleolus fractures are caused by the application of rotational force through the ankle joint in several orientations. Multiple techniques are available for the fixation of medial malleolar fractures.
METHODS: Horizontal medial malleolus osteotomies were performed in eighteen synthetic distal tibiae and randomized into two fixation groups: 1) two parallel unicortical cancellous screws or 2) two Acutrak 2 headless compression screws. Specimens were subjected to offset axial tension loading. Frontal plane interfragmentary motion was monitored.
FINDINGS: The headle

OBJECTIVES: To report on unique cases of spinal compression fractures due to pregnancy-associated osteoporosis (PAO) and to suggest a satisfactory treatment modality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center retrospective study. We reviewed the data of 535 patients with osteoporotic spinal compression fractures over a period of 5-year. Two patients who developed spinal compression fractures due to PAO were identified and treated.
RESULTS: The clinical presentation and blood investigations ruled out other causes of osteoporosis. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to confirm the diagnosis

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effectiveness and complications of the percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) applications in vertebral compression fractures.
METHODS: Our study was carried out as a retrospective study in which PVP was conducted on patients with vertebral compression fractures due to benign or malignant causes between October 2006 and December 2009. The patients' pain was evaluated on a visual analog scale (VAS). In addition, the amount of cement injected, whether or not any leakage from the vertebrae corpus was seen, and any complications resulting from the application du

Local biomechanical factors in the etiology of vertebral compression fractures are reviewed. The vertebral body is particularly vulnerable to compression fracture when its bone mineral density (BMD) falls with age. However, the risk of fracture, and the type of fracture produced, does not depend simply on BMD. Equally important is the state of degeneration of the adjacent intervertebral discs, which largely determines how compressive forces are distributed over the vertebral body. Disc height also influences load-sharing between the vertebral body and neural arch, and hence by Wolff's Law can

Patients experience more than 700,000 osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures each year in the United States, primarily because of bone brittleness and the inability of the vertebrae to resist increased forces applied to them. Patients diagnosed with this type of fracture are given the option of conservative or operative treatment approaches. Although a typical compression fracture generally heals in 6 to 12 weeks, patients may be offered the kyphoplasty procedure, which reduces the fracture and stabilizes it with cement. Although this procedure is not without risk, it is deemed a safe an

Approximately twenty percent of women will suffer a compression fracture sometime in their later years. Almost always the result of postmenopausal osteoporosis, they create dramatic and lasting consequences that lead to pain, reduced physiologic function and increased frailty. Recognition and treatment of compression fractures is an important step in maintaining an acceptable level of comfort and an optimal functional ability.

Fifteen patients who underwent percutaneous fixation of mallet fractures of the distal phalanx using compression fixation pins were assessed. Anatomical reduction was achieved in all patients. There were no nonunions. The mean active range of motion of the distal interphalangeal joint was 1 degrees of hyperextension to 69 degrees of flexion. The fixation was stable enough to allow early active motion exercise of the distal interphalangeal joint. This technique results in a good range of motion in a shorter period of time than other treatments.

Corticosteroids are commonly used in the treatment of connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Although they are usually efficacious, osteoporosis leading to spine compression fractures is not uncommon. In this case report, we describe an elderly patient with systemic lupus erythematosus on long-term corticosteroid therapy who presented with symptoms of acute abdomen with minimal low back symptoms. No intraabdominal process was found by abdominal studies and exploratory laparotomy. Increased lower back symptoms led to further skeletal spine studies, which initially demo

STUDY DESIGN: A literature review of experiences with vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for treating symptomatic, osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs).
OBJECTIVES: To summarize the advantages and disadvantages of kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Osteoporotic VCFs are a leading cause of disability and morbidity in the elderly. The consequences of osteoporotic VCFs (pain and often progressive vertebral collapse with resultant spinal kyphosis) adversely affect quality of life, physical function, mental health, and survival. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty a

Interventional radiologists have been performing image-guided spinal procedures for many years. Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a newer technique in which a medical grade cement is injected though a needle into a painful fractured vertebral body. This stabilizes the fracture, allowing most patients to discontinue or significantly decrease analgesics and resume normal activity. The impact of this procedure on the morbidity and expense associated with symptomatic osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in the United States may be significant. Patients who are unresponsive to conservative the

Lateral mass compression fractures of the axis involve compression of the pedicle and displacement of the overlying facet, with or without an accompanying fracture of the odontoid. These unilateral fractures are not rare. Correlation is made between clinical cases and cadaver material with analysis of microradiographs. Criteria for recognition of the resultant healed fracture deformity include: (1) Tilting of the odontoid; (2) Loss of the odontoid shoulder on the affected side; (3) Increased downward slope of the affected facet; (4) Lateral compression, possibly with buckling; (5) Asymmetrical

Prevalent vertebral compression fracture(s) have been reported as having a negative impact on pain, disability, and quality of life. But no study has evaluated the effect of previous fracture on the course of acute compression fractures. The aim of the present study was to compare the natural course of the acute compression fracture in patients with (n = 51) and without (n = 56) previous vertebral compression fracture(s). The study is a retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort followed with postal questionnaires during a 12-month period after an acute fracture event. Eligible patients we

BACKGROUND: The treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) aims to alleviate pain and prevent further compression; however, compression often progresses during conservative treatments. Furthermore, studies on the factors affecting compression rate progression and the timing at which compression progresses the most are limited.
METHODS: A total of 122 patients with OVCF, who were follow-up duration > 6 months, were included. Factors, such as age, sex, fracture levels, bone mineral density, body mass index, medications for osteoporosis, initial compression rate, fracture lo

Intraspinal cystic lesions with different pathogeneses have been reported to cause neurological deficits; however, no one has focused on the intraspinal extradural cysts that develop after osteoporotic compression fracture. The reported case features a 66-year-old woman presenting with progressive neurological deficit, back pain, and no history of additional trauma after undergoing conservative treatment for an osteoporotic fracture of L-1. The authors present serial radiographs and MR images demonstrating an epidural cyst successfully treated via a single posterior approach. This appears to b
