Sacral stress fractures in athletes.

Low back and buttock pain in runners can be a source of frustration for the athlete and a diagnostic dilemma for the physician. The authors reported on 3 cases of sacral stress fractures in women athletes, all of which initially presented as low back and/or buttock pain. Sacral stress fractures have been increasingly recognized as a potential cause of these symptoms, especially in young athletes. Because plain radiograph findings are typically normal, the diagnosis is best made with bone scintigraphy. Computed tomography is indicated if there is concern about neoplasm and to evaluate healing o

Stress fractures in ballet dancers.

We surveyed 54 female dancers in two professional ballet companies. A total of 27 fractures were reported in 17 dancers. Metatarsal fractures were the most common (63%), followed by fractures of the tibia (22%) and spine (7%). Dancers who danced greater than 5 hours per day were significantly more likely to have a stress fracture than those dancing less than 5 hours per day. Dancers in the stress fracture group also had a significantly longer duration of amenorrhea than those in the group with no stress fractures. No significant difference was found between the dancers who had stress fractures

Stress fractures. Identifiable risk factors.

To answer the question why such large differences in stress fracture morbidity rates (2% to 64%) exist in different countries, we prospectively evaluated 312 recruits for possible risk factors for stress fractures. Prior to training, each recruit underwent an evaluation including the following: orthopaedic examination, foot and tibial radiographs, measurements of tibial bone width, bone mineral content, bone density, aerobic physical fitness and leg power, assessments of somatotype and smoking habits, and evaluation of sociological and psychological factors. Using a multivariate analysis, two

Stress fractures in figure skaters.

In 1987, during two great skating contests--the Universiade in the Tatra Mountains and the Gold Pirouette in Zagreb--a total of 42 world class skaters were asked through a questionnaire if they had ever in their career suffered from a stress fracture. Of the 42 skaters, 9 had stress fractures. Four stress fractures occurred during preseason training (two fibular, one second metatarsal, and two fourth metatarsal stress fractures). Increased mileage was reported by three skaters and the fourth had done too much speed training on hills. Five stress fractures occurred during the season (one tibial

Stress fractures in rheumatoid arthritis.

Four cases of rheumatoid arthritis with a total of 12 undisplaced stress fractures of the lower extremities are described. Pain, swelling and disability arising from these fractures were initially mistaken for rheumatoid synovitis. Three patients had osteoporosis, and one had osteomalacia. A high index of suspicion is necessary in the diagnosis of these fractures. Radiographs and, if necessary, bone scans are indicated in rheumatoid patients presenting with spontaneous pain in the lower extremities in association with tenderness localized over the bone rather than the joint, particularly in th

An unusual stress fracture: Bilateral posterior longitudinal stress fracture of tibia.

INTRODUCTION: Stress fractures (SF) occur when healthy bone is subjected to cyclic loading, which the normal carrying range capacity is exceeded. Usually, stress fractures occur at the metatarsal bones, calcaneus, proximal or distal tibia and tends to be unilateral. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This article presents a 58-year-old male patient with bilateral posterior longitudinal tibial stress fractures. A 58 years old male suffering for persistent left calf pain and decreased walking distance for last one month and after imaging studies posterior longitudinal tibial stress fracture was detected on

[Stress fracture of the calcaneus].

Calcaneal stress fracture is an injury that particularly affects athletes and runners owing to repeated stress on the lower extremities without sufficient recovery time. Medial and lateral heel pain during activity raises suspicion of the injury, but radiological examinations are required for a definitive diagnosis. The treatment is usually conservative, involving rest and dietary correction, and a pharmacological or surgical approach is only relevant in some few cases.

Olecranon Stress Fracture.

Olecranon stress fractures are a rare upper extremity fracture that primarily affects throwing athletes. The incidence of olecranon stress fractures are increasing owing to the number of patients playing and the volume of engagement in competitive sports, especially in the pediatric population. However, olecranon stress fractures can present a challenge from a management and a rehabilitation perspective owing to their vague presentation, thereby affecting how these patients are diagnosed and managed. Therefore, it is imperative to further evaluate the disease process, diagnosis, and treatment

Stress fracture in athletes.

Stress fractures are widely encountered in sport medicine and rheumatology. Stress fractures result from abnormal and repetitive loading on normal bone that lead to microdamage and then fracture. They occur after sudden increase in physical activity. They appear mostly at lower limbs. Women are at higher risk than men. Patients complain of mechanical pain. Clinical findings include focused pain and sometimes swelling. No biological test is useful for diagnosis. Plain radiographs are normal in early stage disease. MRI is the gold standard to confirm stress fracture. Treatments of stress fractur

Stress Fracture of the Sacrum.

A physical therapist evaluated a 25-year-old male military trainee, who reported 1 week of left hip pain exacerbated by running and sitting cross-legged. At follow-up, the patient reported unchanged hip pain and new left knee pain. Due to potential for multifocal stress injuries outside the visual field of a single MRI, bone scan and single-photon emission computerized tomography were chosen as imaging modalities. Imaging revealed a nondisplaced lateral left-sided sacral stress fracture and left calcaneal stress fracture. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2015;45(11):965. doi:10.2519/jospt.2015.0411.

[Stress fractures in the military context].

BACKGROUND: Soldiers, especially as recruits, are exposed to significantly elevated stress patterns of the foot due to occupation-related marching and excessive running. This can lead to military-specific stress fractures of the metatarsals, i.e., marching fractures. The treatment and prevention of stress fractures are of particular importance in the military context due to the impact on operational capability and treatment costs. A uniform classification of these fractures does not yet exist. OBJECTIVE: Review of stress fractures in the military setting with presentation of the incidence, ri

[Stress fractures of the lower limbs].

Stress reactions and fractures represent an important differential diagnostic entity, especially in patients active in sports. The lower extremities have predilection sites for stress fractures, which require special treatment in the context of the underlying risk factors. Clinically, patients usually complain of stress-dependent pain in the affected region and sport activities are mostly limited or even impossible. The detection of acute stress fractures is usually missed by conventional X‑ray within the first 4-6 weeks. The gold standard diagnostic tool is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). D

Isolated fibular stress fractures: Radiographic parameters.

BACKGROUND: Fibular stress fractures are uncommon injuries with an incompletely understood pathogenesis and predisposing characteristics. This study investigated the demographic and radiographic risk factors for fibular stress fractures. METHODS: A retrospective chart review from 2010 to 2018 revealed thirteen patients with isolated fibular stress fractures. Demographics, history of fracture, fracture location, bone quality, and heel alignment were collected. RESULTS: The cohort consisted of six men and seven women with a mean age of 41.8 years. The average BMI was 28.5kg/m2. Three patients

Pediatric stress fractures: a pictorial essay.

More children are participating in organized and recreational athletics at a younger age. It has been well documented that increased athletic specialization and year-round activities have resulted in higher incidences of overuse injuries, including stress fractures and stress reactions. Initially, stress fractures can be radiographically occult. Continued stress on the injured bone or cartilage can lead to progressive radiographic changes. Because of the prevalence of these injuries, both orthopedic surgeons and radiologists should be aware of the radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging (M

Stress fractures: diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Stress fractures are common injuries in athletes and military recruits. These injuries occur more commonly in lower extremities than in upper extremities. Stress fractures should be considered in patients who present with tenderness or edema after a recent increase in activity or repeated activity with limited rest. The differential diagnosis varies based on location, but commonly includes tendinopathy, compartment syndrome, and nerve or artery entrapment syndrome. Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints) can be distinguished from tibial stress fractures by diffuse tenderness along the len
