Fungal Mycobiome of Mature Strawberry Fruits (Fragaria x ananassa Variety 'Monterey') Suggests a Potential Market Site Contamination with Harmful Yeasts.

An amplicon metagenomic approach based on the ITS2 region of fungal rDNA was used to investigate the diversity of fungi associated with mature strawberries collected from a volcanic orchard and open-air market stands. Based on the Kruskal-Wallis test, no statistically significant differences were observed in both non-phylogenetic and phylogenetic alpha diversity indices. According to beta diversity analyses, significant differences in fungal communities were found between groups (orchard vs. market). Taxonomic assignment of amplicon sequence variables (ASVs) revealed 7 phyla and 31 classes. Th

Variation in Volatile Organic Compounds in native, synanthropic accessions and cultivars of the musk strawberry (Fragaria moschata Duchesne ex Weston).

Prior to the world-wide dominance of F. ×ananassa in strawberry production, native species had been cultivated in European gardens for centuries. Especially the musk strawberry (F. moschata) had been highly appreciated due to its fruit size and extraordinary aroma. Detailed studies on the diversity of the species' fruit aroma are lacking, although breeding aims to improve strawberry aroma by complex crossings during recent years. Today a few cultivars, abandoned synanthropic occurrences and native populations of this species exist in Germany. Here we characterised aroma profiles of F. moschata

The Elicitor Protein AsES Induces a Systemic Acquired Resistance Response Accompanied by Systemic Microbursts and Micro-Hypersensitive Responses in Fragaria ananassa.

The elicitor AsES (Acremonium strictum elicitor subtilisin) is a 34-kDa subtilisin-like protein secreted by the opportunistic fungus Acremonium strictum. AsES activates innate immunity and confers resistance against anthracnose and gray mold diseases in strawberry plants (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) and the last disease also in Arabidopsis. In the present work, we show that, upon AsES recognition, a cascade of defense responses is activated, including: calcium influx, biphasic oxidative burst (O2⋅- and H2O2), hypersensitive cell-death response (HR), accumulation of autofluorescent compounds, ce

Genome-Wide Identification of NLP Family Genes in Cultivated Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) and Analysis of Their Expression Under Heat and Botrytis cinerea Stresses.

Nodule inception (NIN)-like proteins (NLPs) are plant-specific transcription factors regulating nutrient absorption, growth, and stress tolerance; however, their roles in stress responses remain largely uncharacterized. Cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa 'Camarosa') serves as an ideal model for dissecting the evolution and function of NLP genes. In this study, 37 FaNLP genes were identified genome-wide. Phylogenetic analysis classified them into three subfamilies, which are evenly distributed across seven chromosomes. Divergent exon-intron structures and conserved motif compositions su

Strawberry fruit (Fragaria x ananassa Romina) juice attenuates oxidative imbalance with concomitant modulation of metabolic indices linked to male infertility in testicular oxidative injury.

This study investigated the protective properties of strawberry fruit on testicular oxidative injury. Oxidative injury was induced in vitro in testicular tissue homogenates by incubation with ferrous sulphate (FeSO4 ) in the presence and absence of strawberry fruit extract (SFE) for 30 min at 37˚C, with gallic acid serving as the standard antioxidant drug. Induction of oxidative injury significantly reduced glutathione, cholesterol and triglyceride levels; and inhibited SOD, catalase and ENTPDase activities when compared to normal control. It also led to exacerbated nitric oxide, malondialdehy

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting pseudomonads increases anthocyanin concentration in strawberry fruits (Fragaria x ananassa var. Selva) in conditions of reduced fertilization.

Anthocyanins are a group of common phenolic compounds in plants. They are mainly detected in flowers and fruits, are believed to play different important roles such as in the attraction of animals and seed dispersal, and also in the increase of the antioxidant response in tissues directly or indirectly affected by biotic or abiotic stress factors. As a major group of secondary metabolites in plants commonly consumed as food, they are of importance in both the food industry and human nutrition. It is known that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can influence the plant secondary metabolic pathwa

Analysis of Methylesterase Gene Family in Fragaria vesca Unveils Novel Insights into the Role of FvMES2 in Methyl Salicylate-Mediated Resistance against Strawberry Gray Mold.

Methylesterases (MESs) hydrolyze carboxylic ester and are important for plant metabolism and defense. However, the understanding of MES' role in strawberries against pathogens remains limited. This study identified 15 FvMESs with a conserved catalytic triad from the Fragaria vesca genome. Spatiotemporal expression data demonstrated the upregulated expression of FvMESs in roots and developing fruits, suggesting growth involvement. The FvMES promoter regions harbored numerous stress-related cis-acting elements and transcription factors associated with plant defense mechanisms. Moreover, FvMES2 e

Foliar application of microbial consortium formulations suppresses Phomopsis leaf blight, promotes vegetative growth, and modulates biochemical defence in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Camarosa) under protected cultivation.

BACKGROUND: Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Camarosa) cultivation under protected shade-net structures in South India is increasingly constrained by Phomopsis leaf blight and concurrent foliar insect infestations. Microbial formulations and consortia may provide sustainable alternatives to intensive synthetic pesticide use. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated four commercial microbial formulations, applied individually and as a consortium at 5 and 10 mL L-1, for their effects on Phomopsis leaf blight severity, foliar insect incidence, vegetative growth, and biochemical traits of strawb

Genome‑wide identification of NAC transcription factor family members and functional characterization of FaNAC7‑Fve6 in low‑temperature tolerance via the ROS scavenging pathway in Fragaria × ananassa.

NAC transcription factors are key regulators of plant growth and stress responses, but their role in low-temperature tolerance of octoploid strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) remains largely unexplored. In particular, little is known about the evolutionary characteristics of the NAC gene family in this species or the molecular mechanisms by which these genes mediate low-temperature stress responses. Here, we identified 371 FaNAC genes unevenly distributed across 28 chromosomes, with the Fve subgenome being the most abundant. Members of the same subgroup share highly conserved gene structures and

Genetic relationships among strains of Xanthomonas fragariae based on random amplified polymorphic DNA PCR, repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR, and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR data and generation of multiplexed PCR primers useful for the identification of this phytopathogen.

Genetic relationships among 25 isolates of Xanthomonas fragariae from diverse geographic regions were determined by three PCR methods that rely on different amplification priming strategies: random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) PCR, repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP) PCR, and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR. The results of these assays are mutually consistent and indicate that pathogenic strains are very closely related to each other. RAPD, ERIC, and REP PCR assays identified nine, four, and two genotypes, respectively, within X. fragariae isolates. A single
