Training Ghanaian frontline healthcare workers in public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigation and response.

INTRODUCTION: Beyond initial formal academic education, the need for continuous professional development through in-service workforce capacity improvement programs that are aimed at enhancing knowledge and skills of public healthcare workers has assumed immense priority worldwide. This has been heightened by the on-going Ebola Virus Disease outbreak, which is exposing the weak public health systems in West Africa. In response to this need, the Ghana Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Program organized a short-course for frontline health workers in the Greater Accra region of Ghana in order to a

Family Outcomes Associated With Occupational Trauma Exposure in Frontline Workers: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Frontline workers are routinely exposed to traumatic and highly stressful events. Although the psychological effects of occupational trauma are well established, evidence suggests that these effects extend beyond the family members, affecting their psychological health, relationships, and functioning. Reported outcomes include secondary traumatic stress, psychological distress, caregiver burden, relationship difficulties, disrupted family functioning, and broader social impacts. However, evidence remains fragmented across occupational groups, disciplines, methodological approaches,

Health Status, Health Determinants, and Use of Preventive Services Among Frontline Workers in Homeless Services.

INTRODUCTION: Homeless service workers play a key role in addressing the social and health needs of people experiencing homelessness, yet little is known about their own health status and behaviors. METHODS: A nationwide survey of Hungarian homeless service workers (n = 548) was conducted using a short version of the European Health Interview Survey. The results were compared with age- and sex-adjusted data from the general Hungarian population. RESULTS: Despite reporting good health, one-third of homeless service workers had long-standing health problems, with one-fourth experiencing activi

Frontline Social Service Workers' Experiences Supporting Sexual and Reproductive Health of People Who Have Been Incarcerated.

BACKGROUND: Research on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care among women and gender-diverse people in prisons in Canada demonstrates gaps in access to health information and institutional barriers to care. Women and gender-diverse people leaving prison often access community supports provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The experiences, needs and skills of staff at these organizations with respect to supporting client SRH are under-researched. METHODS: This study followed a community-based design involving four qualitative focus groups at partner organization sites, for a t

Ketamine-Assisted Group Therapy for Work-Related Stress in First Responders and Frontline Health Care Workers.

INTRODUCTION: Ketamine is an evidenced-based treatment for depression, and it has shown promise in addressing many other mental health conditions related to work-related stress or burnout, such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is part of an emerging model of psychedelic medicine that employs psychoactive agents to support the psychotherapeutic process. Frontline health care workers and first responders encountered excessive levels of job stress, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article reports on a 6-week community-based group-KA

Psychological symptoms and resilience among former frontline healthcare workers against COVID-19: Insights from network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive research on resilience within specific disorders such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety, there remains a gap in understanding how resilience interacts with psychological symptoms at a more granular level. METHODS: We conducted a survey involving 2070 healthcare workers from 83 medical and health facilities in Beijing, China, who were on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychological symptoms and resilience were assessed using standardized measures: the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), Insomnia Severity Index (

Access to healthcare for street sex workers in the UK: perspectives and best practice guidance from a national cross-sectional survey of frontline workers.

BACKGROUND: Street sex workers (SSWs) are a highly marginalised and stigmatised group who carry an extremely high burden of unmet health need. They experience multiple and interdependent health and social problems and extreme health inequality. Despite high levels of chronic physical and mental ill-health, there is little evidence of effective healthcare provision for this group. They are often considered 'hard to reach', but many individuals and organisations have extensive experience of working with this group. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of professionals who work with SS

An exploratory study on the factors affecting the mental health and well-being of frontline workers in homeless services.

Frontline workers in homeless services work in a high-intensity, emotionally consuming environment, with frequent exposure to traumatic material with potentially significant consequences for their own mental health. This, in turn, may have a negative impact on the quality of care provided to homeless service users. Prevention of this trajectory may be achieved through psychologically informed environments for staff. This study aimed to explore factors that may influence the development of burnout, secondary traumatic stress (STS), depression, anxiety and stress in this population. Elevated lev

Whose Elimination? Frontline Workers' Perspectives on the Elimination of the Human African Trypanosomiasis and Its Anticipated Consequences.

While academic literature has paid careful attention to the technological efforts-drugs, tests, and tools for vector control-deployed to eliminate Gambiense Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), the human resources and health systems dimensions of elimination are less documented. This paper analyses the perspectives and experiences of frontline nurses, technicians, and coordinators who work for the HAT programme in the former province of Bandundu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at the epidemic's very heart. The research is based on 21 semi-structured interviews conducted with frontline

HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Impairment Knowledge and Current Practices: A Survey of Frontline Healthcare Workers in South Africa.

Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) associated with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains prevalent amongst people living with HIV. Testing for HIV-associated NCI in routine clinical care is limited in South Africa and reasons for this are unclear. We conducted an online survey amongst healthcare workers (HCW) to assess HIV-associated NCI knowledge and current practices. The final sample included four hundred surveys (n=400). Chi-square analyses were used to explore HCW knowledge of HIV-associated NCI and screening tools. One-way ANOVA was used to compare mean responses between HCW catego
