The impact and transport patterns of the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident-derived radiocesium in the tropical North Pacific remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the latitudinal and vertical distributions of the concentrations (activities) of 137Cs, 226Ra, and 228Ra in this tropical area (8°-10°N) in April-May 2025. We observed low 228Ra concentrations in surface and mixed layers (< 0.5 mBq/L), indicating that the influence of seawater from the coastal area was not dominant, even near the eastern coast of the Philippines. 137Cs concentrations at t

There is concern among residents that their children might suffer from thyroid cancer in the near future after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station (FDNPS) accident. However, the demographic and geographical distribution of thyroid equivalent doses was not thoroughly evaluated, and direct thyroid measurements were conducted only for 1,200 children, whose individual thyroid doses were assessed on the basis of those measurements accounting for the dynamics of radioiodine intake. We conducted hierarchical clustering analyses of 100 or 300 randomly sampled behavioural questionnaire sheets o

Just two years have passed since the Tokyo Electric Power Company-Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident, a multidimensional disaster that combined to destroy the local infrastructure on which the safety system depended and gave a serious impact to the world. Countermeasures including evacuation, sheltering, and control of the food chain were implemented in a timely manner by the Japanese government. However, there is a clear need for improvement, especially in the areas of nuclear safety and protection and also in the management of the radiation health risk during and even after

After the Fukushima accident in 2011, approximately 160000 residents were forced to evacuate the site. The evacuation order has since been lifted and the Japanese government is now advancing a return strategy. As the return proceeds, deterioration of health indicators and measures in the municipalities around the nuclear power plant remains unchanged. This affected the local governments' coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination drive during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, municipalities keep track of residents' information and implement health-related measures. However, many residents evacu

We conducted a survey among nurses who were working at the Fukushima Medical University Hospital at the time of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident to clarify the factors associated with their intention to leave their jobs during the radiation emergency. We asked 345 nurses (17 men and 328 women) about their intention to leave their jobs after the accident. We also asked about relevant factors including the participants' demographic factors, living situation, working status, and knowledge of radiation health effects. We found that living with preschoolers (OR = 1.87, 95%CI: 1.02

The biological dose of nuclear workers engaged in emergency response tasks at Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was estimated in the present study. As the national core center for radiation emergency medical preparedness in Japan, the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) received all individuals who were suspected of being overexposed to acute radiation. In the course of health examinations at NIRS, biological dosimetry was performed by the dicentric chromosome assay (DCA). Twelve individuals were examined from 21 March-1 July 2011. The

PURPOSE: Radioactive cesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were generated by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FNPP) accident. Despite their low radioactivity, CsMPs are insoluble and their dose distribution to the surrounding tissues is non-uniform, raising concerns about their biological effects. In this study, we investigated the cellular effects of CsMPs collected from soil contaminated by the FNPP accident.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each three CsMP was placed on immortalized normal human epithelial cells (hTERT-RPE1) and co-incubated for up to 72 h. Induction of DNA double-strand b

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident led to contamination with radioactive cesium in an extensive environment in Japan in 2011. We evaluated the concentration of radioactive cesium in the skeletal muscles of 22 wild boars and the expression of IFN-γ, TLR3, and CyclinG1 in the small intestine and compared them with those of wild boar samples collected from Hyogo prefecture. The average 137Cs radioactivity concentration in wild boars in the ex-evacuation zone was 470 Bq/kg. Most of samples still showed radioactivity concentration that exceeded the regulatory limit for foods, but th

From October to December 2010, just before the radiological accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, 71 radiation professionals from radiation facilities in Japan were asked what they considered as a "safe dose" of radiation for themselves, their partners, parents, children, siblings, and friends. Although the 'safe dose' they noted varied widely, from less than 1 mSv y to more than 100 mSv y, the average dose was 35.6 mSv y, which is around the middle point between the legal exposure dose limits for the annual average and for any single year. Similar results were obtained from o

Forest soils became the primary reservoir of 137Cs following the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011; however, site-specific observations of its vertical migration with annual resolution encompassing the first decade post-deposition remain limited. This study analyzed one of the few such long-term records of 137Cs depth profiles in forest soils to quantify decadal downward migration dynamics. The migration center, calculated in this study as the inventory-weighted mean depth from the litter surface, was used as a site-comparable indicator. Soil-core measurements collected repeatedly betwe

The thyroid glands of an 11-year-old castrated cow housed in a region contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident were collected for histopathological examination. The estimated cumulative external exposure dose was 459 mSv. Macroscopically, the left lobe of the thyroid gland was firm and enlarged, and multilobular cystic structures could be observed on the cut surface. Histologically, the tumor cells were tall, cuboidal to columnar, and formed follicles of variable sizes and shapes. The fibrous capsule was unclear, and the neoplastic invasion of follicular tumor cells w

Observations and lessons identified after the Fukushima accident have been collected and assessed by ICRP Task Group 84. Together with the observations of other expert organizations, they are being used to further develop the current system of protection. While many of the established protection criteria remain valid, improvements are needed in three areas. Key issues related to the need of planning for long-term protective actions (criteria for returning home, dealing with waste) have to be implemented as important elements of the national protection strategies during the preparedness stage.

Individuals who traveled to contaminated areas after the Fukushima nuclear accident have concerns about the health effects. However, medical follow-up for any adverse health effects will be difficult without personal dose measurements. Cytogenetic biodosimetry is a reasonable method of assessing absorbed doses retrospectively. We analyzed dicentric chromosomes for 265 Fukushima travelers, mostly journalists and rescue workers, who had been dispatched to northeastern Japan during the nuclear emergency. As a control group, 37 healthy volunteers who had not visited Japan since the accident were e

Exposure of the thyroid gland to ionizing radiation at a young age is the main recognized risk factor for differentiated thyroid cancer. After the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear accidents, thyroid cancer screening was implemented mainly for children, leading to case over-diagnosis as seen in South Korea after the implementation of opportunistic screening (where subjects are recruited at healthcare sites). The aim of cancer screening is to reduce morbidity and mortality, but screening can also cause negative effects on health (with unnecessary treatment if over-diagnosis) and on quality of lif

BACKGROUND: The Fukushima Pregnancy and Birth Survey was launched to monitor pregnant mothers' health after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident. Several lines of investigations have indicated that a disaster impacts maternal mental health with childbirth. However, there is no research regarding mental health of mothers with fetal loss after a disaster. In this report, we focus on those women immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima NPP accident and discuss their support needs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data regarding 61

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that the incidence of cryptorchidism may have increased in Japan following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March 2011; however, empirical evidence remains limited. This study aimed to assess the possible impact of the accident on cryptorchidism incidence over an extended period of time before and after the accident.
METHODS: Detailed information on all patients who underwent orchiopexy between April 2008 and March 2021 was obtained from the medical records of 86 hospitals in Fukushima Prefecture. Interrupted time series analys

This study clarified the negative aspects of the self-imposed evacuation of mothers of small children seeking to avoid radiation exposure from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident on 11 March 2011. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 27 mothers, employing open-ended inquiries based on an interview guide. Our analysis of their responses using the Ka-Wakita-Jiro (KJ) method categorized the results into eight distinct groups comprising 142 labels. These categories included continued anxiety about the health effects of radiation, differences in risk perception, changes in

Large amounts of anthropogenic radionuclides, such as 134Cs and 137Cs(radiocesium), were released into the atmosphere due to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1-NPP) accident and were transported into various environments. The soil accumulations of diffused radionuclides are marked by large differences in their horizontal distributions, and the vertical air dose rates vary depending on the topography, altitude and other factors. In this study, soil activity concentrations of eight islands in the Izu Islands, ~334-563 km south of the F1-NPP, were analyzed from both horizontal and vert
