Structural and functional neuroimaging findings in substance-related disorders.

Intoxication with alcohol results in depressed global glucose metabolism that continues into the stages of withdrawal and abstinence. The decrease in metabolism, however, is not equal across the brain, with certain regions more affected than others. Such a pattern of disturbance suggests that the effect of alcohol on the brain cannot simply be a nonspecific depressant effect secondary to decreased blood flow or glucose transport into the cells but may be related to the dysfunction of the various neurotransmitter systems. Different authors have suggested the dysfunction to be related to the GAB

A functional neuroimaging description of two deep dyslexic patients.

Deep dyslexia is a striking reading disorder that results from left-hemisphere brain damage and is characterized by semantic errors in reading single words aloud (e.g., reading 'spirit' as 'whisky'). Two types of explanation for this syndrome have been advanced. One is that deep dyslexia results from a residual left-hemisphere reading system that has lost the ability to pronounce a printed word without reference to meaning. The second is that deep dyslexia reflects right-hemisphere word processing. Although previous attempts to adjudicate between these hypotheses have been inconclusive, the co

Functional neuroimaging studies of depression: the anatomy of melancholia.

Functional brain imaging techniques, which permit noninvasive measures of neurophysiology and neuroreceptor binding, are powerful and sensitive tools for research aimed at elucidating the pathophysiology of major depression. The application of these technologies in depression research has produced several studies of resting cerebral blood flow (BF) and glucose metabolism in subjects imaged during various phases of illness and treatment. This review examines these data and the principles relevant to their interpretation and discusses the insights they provide into the anatomical correlates of d

Neuroimaging abnormalities in functional/dissociative seizures: a meta-analysis.

The neural basis of functional/dissociative seizures represents a significant challenge for psychiatry and neurology. While abnormalities in neuroimaging have been observed, findings across studies remain inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analyses examined neuroimaging abnormalities in functional/dissociative seizures, conducting separate meta-analyses of cortical thickness and whole-brain, seed-based, resting-state functional connectivity. A total of 22 studies were included in the review, of which seven and three were suitable for meta-analysis of structural and functional MRI da

The functional neuroimaging correlates of psychogenic versus organic dystonia.

The neurobiological basis of psychogenic movement disorders remains poorly understood and the management of these conditions difficult. Functional neuroimaging studies have provided some insight into the pathophysiology of disorders implicating particularly the prefrontal cortex, but there are no studies on psychogenic dystonia, and comparisons with findings in organic counterparts are rare. To understand the pathophysiology of these disorders better, we compared the similarities and differences in functional neuroimaging of patients with psychogenic dystonia and genetically determined dystoni

Single-subject anxiety treatment outcome prediction using functional neuroimaging.

The possibility of individualized treatment prediction has profound implications for the development of personalized interventions for patients with anxiety disorders. Here we utilize random forest classification and pre-treatment functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) to generate individual subject treatment outcome predictions. Before cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), 48 adults (25 GAD and 23 PD) reduced (via cognitive reappraisal) or maintained their emotional responses to negative images during fM

Neurocognition under hypnosis: findings from recent functional neuroimaging studies.

Functional neuroimaging studies show that hypnosis affects attention by modulating anterior cingulate cortex activation and uncoupling conflict monitoring and cognitive control function. Considering functional changes in the activation of the occipital and temporal cortices, precuneus, and other extrastriate visual areas, which account for hypnosis-induced altered reality perception, the role of mental imagery areas appears to be central under hypnosis. This is further stressed by the fact that motor commands are processed differently in the normal conscious state, deviating toward the precune

Structural and functional neuroimaging studies of the suicidal brain.

Suicidality is a major challenge for today's health care. Evidence suggests that there are differences in cognitive functioning of suicidal patients but the knowledge about the underlying neurobiology is limited. Brain imaging offers the advantage of a non-invasive in vivo direct estimation of detailed brain structure, regional brain functioning and estimation of molecular processes in the brain. We have reviewed the literature on neuroimaging studies of the suicidal brain. This article contains studies on structural imaging such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

[Structural and functional neuroimaging of the pathophysiology of apraxia].

A better understanding of the neural bases of apraxia is an important prerequisite to develop new therapeutic strategies for the disabling apraxic deficits after left-hemisphere stroke, like disturbed imitation of gestures, deficient pantomime, and object use deficits. Recently, functional and structural imaging methods allowed deeper insights into the pathophysiology of apraxia: While apraxic object use deficits result from the dysfunction of an extended fronto-parietal network within the left hemisphere, pantomime deficits are caused by impaired functioning of the left inferior frontal corte

A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies of dyslexia.

Reading and phonological processing deficits have been the primary focus of neuroimaging studies addressing the neurologic basis of developmental dyslexia, but to date there has been no objective assessment of the consistency of these findings. To address this issue, spatial coordinates reported in the literature were submitted to two parallel activation likelihood estimate (ALE) meta-analyses. First, a meta-analysis including 96 foci from nine publications identified regions where typical readers are likely to show greater activation than dyslexics: two left extrastriate areas within BA 37, p

Functional neuroimaging and presenting psychiatric features in frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a behavioural syndrome caused by degeneration of the frontal and anterior temporal lobes. Behavioural disturbances include psychiatric features. Whether patients with FTD present with psychiatric features varies with the initial neuroanatomical variability of FTD. OBJECTIVE: To identify presenting psychiatric changes not part of diagnostic criteria of FTD and contrast them with the degree of hemispheric asymmetry and frontal and temporal hypoperfusion on single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. METHODS: 74 patients who met conse

Brain alteration of PCOS: neuroimaging and function.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder affecting women, continues to be inadequately understood in terms of its pathogenesis. However, it is strongly associated with structural and functional abnormalities in the brain. This review examines neuroimaging alterations and cerebral functional changes observed in patients with PCOS, investigating their relationships with endocrine-metabolic profiles, behavioral patterns, cognitive performance, and emotional regulation. Neuroimaging studies have identified several key findings, including the enlargement of the pituitary gland

Neuroimaging Evidence of Facial Emotion Processing in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Functional Neuroimaging Studies.

PURPOSE: The neural mechanisms underlying facial emotion processing (FEP) difficulties in autistic people remain unclear. This Seed-based d Mapping with Permutation of Subject Images (SDM-PSI) meta-analysis examined brain activity during FEP in autistic people. METHOD: We systematically searched three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO) for fMRI studies (published up to September 2, 2025) comparing DSM-diagnosed autistic people with non-autistic people (NAP) during FEP, and eligible studies reported whole-brain coordinates. A convergence analysis of the contrasts between the ASD and

Boosting interpersonal emotion regulation through facial imitation: functional neuroimaging foundations.

Empathic function, which is primarily manifested by facial imitation, is believed to play a pivotal role in interpersonal emotion regulation for mood reinstatement. To explore this association and its neural substrates, we performed a questionnaire survey (study l) to identify the relationship between empathy and interpersonal emotion regulation; and a task-mode fMRI study (study 2) to explore how facial imitation, as a fundamental component of empathic processes, promotes the interpersonal emotion regulation effect. Study 1 showed that affective empathy was positively correlated with interper

Multi-Band Brain Network Analysis for Functional Neuroimaging Biomarker Identification.

The functional connectomic profile is one of the non-invasive imaging biomarkers in the computer-assisted diagnostic system for many neuro-diseases. However, the diagnostic power of functional connectivity is challenged by mixed frequency-specific neuronal oscillations in the brain, which makes the single Functional Connectivity Network (FCN) often underpowered to capture the disease-related functional patterns. To address this challenge, we propose a novel functional connectivity analysis framework to conduct joint feature learning and personalized disease diagnosis, in a semi-supervised mann

Psychological functioning, brain morphology, and functional neuroimaging in Klinefelter syndrome.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS; 47,XXY) impacts neurodevelopment and is associated with an increased risk of cognitive, psychological and social impairments, although significant heterogeneity in the neurodevelopmental profile is seen. KS is characterized by a specific cognitive profile with predominantly verbal deficits, preserved function in non-verbal and visuo-spatial domains, executive dysfunction and social impairments, and by an increased vulnerability toward psychiatric disorders. The neurobiological underpinnings of the observed neuropsychological profile have not been established. A distin
