Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) hosts a diverse array of parasites, including several species of Gyrodactylidae. We surveyed populations of mummichogs across three estuarine systems in South Carolina, USA, for gyrodactylids and studied their taxonomy, phylogenetics, and evolutionary history. Production of industrial effluents have led to increased copper (Cu) pollution of aquatic ecosystems, impacting the physiology of aquatic vertebrates. Past work has shown that Cu exerts its toxicity by disruption ion regulation and/ or increasing oxidative stress. This study investigates whether salinity affects the upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) of the euryhaline mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus). Mummichogs were acclimated to seawater (38 ppt, SW) or freshwater (<1 ppt, FW) at 18.5°C (Tacc), then transferred to the opposite salinity. CTmax and physiological profiles were assessed on days 0, 1, 3, 6, and 13 post-transfer. CTmax was consistently lower in FW than in SW, regardless of prior acclimation. We tested the hypothesis that gross morphological abnormalities are a sensitive indicator of exposure to waterborne androgenic and anti-androgenic compounds during embryonic, larval and juvenile stages of development in the common estuarine killifish, the mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus; Pisces: Cyprinodontidae).
