Viral causes of hearing loss: a review for hearing health professionals.

A number of viral infections can cause hearing loss. Hearing loss induced by these viruses can be congenital or acquired, unilateral or bilateral. Certain viral infections can directly damage inner ear structures, others can induce inflammatory responses which then cause this damage, and still others can increase susceptibility or bacterial or fungal infection, leading to hearing loss. Typically, virus-induced hearing loss is sensorineural, although conductive and mixed hearing losses can be seen following infection with certain viruses. Occasionally, recovery of hearing after these infections

A novel partitivirus orchestrates conidiation, stress response, pathogenicity, and secondary metabolism of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium majus.

Mycoviruses are widely present in all major groups of fungi but those in entomopathogenic Metarhizium spp. remain understudied. In this investigation, a novel double-stranded (ds) RNA virus is isolated from Metarhizium majus and named Metarhizium majus partitivirus 1 (MmPV1). The complete genome sequence of MmPV1 comprises two monocistronic dsRNA segments (dsRNA 1 and dsRNA 2), which encode an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and a capsid protein (CP), respectively. MmPV1 is classified as a new member of the genus Gammapartitivirus in the family Partitiviridae based on phylogenetic analysis

Mycosynthesis of AgNPs: mechanisms of nanoparticle formation and antimicrobial activities.

INTRODUCTION: The inactivation and eradication of multidrug-resistant bacteria, fungi, and viruses by conventional antibiotics and drugs have not been effective. The hindering of these pathogens in hospital-acquired infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, particularly strains of S. aureus including community-acquired methicillin-resistant (CA-MRSA) and hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA), is more complicated, specifically in patients having immunodeficiency syndrome. RESEARCH AREA: Bare and functionalized metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) specifically silver (Ag) NPs have shown sign

A multi-kingdom collection of 33,804 reference genomes for the human vaginal microbiome.

The human vagina harbours diverse microorganisms-bacteria, viruses and fungi-with profound implications for women's health. Genome-level analysis of the vaginal microbiome across multiple kingdoms remains limited. Here we utilize metagenomic sequencing data and fungal cultivation to establish the Vaginal Microbial Genome Collection (VMGC), comprising 33,804 microbial genomes spanning 786 prokaryotic species, 11 fungal species and 4,263 viral operational taxonomic units. Notably, over 25% of prokaryotic species and 85% of viral operational taxonomic units remain uncultured. This collection sign

Bone-marrow transplantation and related infections.

The utility of bone-marrow transplantation (BMT) in the treatment of malignant and hematopoietic diseases is increasing. Additionally, refinements in the use of peripheral stem cells, unrelated marrow donors, and management of immunological complications of graft-versus-host reactions have contributed to the increase in the number of BMT performed each year. At the same time, the spectrum of infections associated with BMT are evolving. Improved prophylactic measures are decreasing the severity and frequency of bacterial, yeast and cytomegalovirus and Herpes simplex viral infections. However, o

Immunity to fungi in the lung.

The respiratory tree maintains sterilizing immunity against human fungal pathogens. Humans inhale ubiquitous filamentous molds and geographically restricted dimorphic fungal pathogens that form small airborne conidia. In addition, pathogenic yeasts, exemplified by encapsulated Cryptococcus species, and Pneumocystis pose significant fungal threats to the lung. Classically, fungal pneumonia occurs in immune compromised individuals, specifically in patients with HIV/AIDS, in patients with hematologic malignancies, in organ transplant recipients, and in patients treated with corticosteroids and ta

A Novel Mycovirus Evokes Transcriptional Rewiring in the Fungus Malassezia and Stimulates Beta Interferon Production in Macrophages.

Mycoviruses infect fungi, and while most persist asymptomatically, there are examples of mycoviruses having both beneficial and detrimental effects on their host. Virus-infected Saccharomyces and Ustilago strains exhibit a killer phenotype conferring a growth advantage over uninfected strains and other competing yeast species, whereas hypovirus-infected Cryphonectria parasitica displays defects in growth, sporulation, and virulence. In this study, we identify a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) mycovirus in five Malassezia species. Sequence analysis reveals it to be a totivirus with two dsRNA segmen

Aspergillus fumigatus dsRNA virus promotes fungal fitness and pathogenicity in the mammalian host.

Aspergillus fumigatus accounts for approximately 65% of all invasive fungal infections in humans, with mortality rates from aspergillosis approaching 50%. Fungal virulence in plant pathogenic fungi can be modulated by viruses that infect fungi, also known as mycoviruses. However, their impact on fungal pathogenesis in mammals has remained largely unexplored. Here, utilizing an A. fumigatus strain naturally infected with the double-stranded RNA virus, A. fumigatus polymycovirus-1M (AfuPmV-1M), we found that the mycovirus confers a substantial survival advantage to the fungus under oxidative str

Mycoviruses confer hypovirulence but enhance antifungal volatile organic compound production in a phytopathogenic fungus.

Hypovirulence-associated mycoviruses can be frequently isolated in nature despite their likely compromised ecological fitness, but how their fungal hosts survive in natural environments remains largely unresolved. The discovery of more mycoviruses provides opportunities to understand these mycovirus-host relationships. Here, we characterize a capsidless RNA virus, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum ascoshuvirus 1 (SsAShV1), with a 10.7-kb ssRNA genome encoding a polyprotein containing conserved protease domain and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) domain. SsAShV1 shares structural similarities with an

Correlation of pretransplant viral serology and complications of bone marrow transplantation.

Latent herpes viruses such as herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and varicella zoster virus are often reactivated after bone marrow transplantation, giving rise to infections. In contrast, Epstein-Barr virus infections rarely occur. Significant mortality is induced especially by pneumonitis, most often caused by CMV. Immunosuppression and pancytopenia caused by CMV increase the risk of bacterial infections and invasive fungal infections. Herpes viruses may increase the risk of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Thus, immunity to several herpes viruses was associated

Microglia are not protective against cryptococcal meningitis.

Microglia provide protection against a range of brain infections including bacteria, viruses and parasites, but how these glial cells respond to fungal brain infections is poorly understood. We investigated the role of microglia in the context of cryptococcal meningitis, the most common cause of fungal meningitis in humans. Using a series of transgenic- and chemical-based microglia depletion methods we found that, contrary to their protective role during other infections, loss of microglia did not affect control of Cryptococcus neoformans brain infection which was replicated with several funga

Molecular and biological characterisation of Magnaporthe oryzae botourmiavirus 15.

In this study, we have identified and characterized a novel fungal virus, designated Magnaporthe oryzae botourmiavirus 15 (MoBV15), which was isolated from the rice blast fungus. The genome of MoBV15 is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA (+)ssRNA 3,228 nucleotides in length with a GC content of 51.4%. It features a single open reading frame (ORF) predicted to encode a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). The 5' and 3' ends of the MoBV15 genomic RNA exhibit reverse complementarity and may form a panhandle structure-a feature rarely observed. On tomato-oatmeal medium, the virus‑carry

Inactivation of fungal spores in water using ozone: Kinetics, influencing factors and mechanisms.

Fungal contamination of drinking water sources is increasingly threatening the environment and human health. In this study, the inactivation of three genera of dominant fungi in drinking water sources using ozone was first reported. The inactivation of the fungal spores by ozone could be divided into two distinct stages: first a rapid reduction in survival, and then the inactivation at a slower rate. The secondary stage inactivation fitted the Chick-Watson model well, and there was no significant difference in the second-order inactivation rate constants of the three fungal spores (0.199-0.209

[Viral-bacterial-fungal associations in chronic tonsillitis in children].

The microflora of palatal tonsils was studied in 84 children with chronic tonsillitis in comparison with that in the control group of 38 healthy children. In most of the sick children viral-bacterial and less frequently viral-bacterial-fungal associations were detected with the prevalence of reo- and adenoviruses, Epstein-Barr viruses, coagulase negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as peptostreptococci. Adhesive activity and persistence factors among the main bacterial pathogens were shown to be widely prevalent. The depth of the lesion of tonsillar tissue by the infective

A mycovirus-encoded homologue of plant viral movement proteins is not functional in movement complementation assays in plants.

Valsa mali negative strand RNA virus 1 (VmNSRV1), a fungal virus infecting Valsa mali and belonging to the Phenuiviridae family, was recently shown to be capable of naturally infecting plants. Its RNA2 encodes a homologue of a plant virus movement protein (MP) that can complement MP-deficient virus vectors and localizes to plasmodesmata, allowing natural cross-kingdom infection. To determine whether this property is a common feature among mycoviruses possessing distant MP homologues or an isolate-specific trait, we investigated Trichoderma gamsii cogu-like virus 1 (TgClV1), a Phenuiviridae mem

Heterologous Expression of Cryphonectria Hypovirus 1 in Fusarium verticillioides Reveals Stable Replication and Reduced Fumonisin Production.

Mycoviruses represent promising tools for the biological control of phytopathogenic fungi. However, their application is often constrained by host specificity and low natural prevalence in certain pathogens. Fusarium verticillioides, a major maize pathogen and fumonisin B1 (FB1) producer, harbors very few known mycoviruses, a circumstance that limits the development of virus-based control strategies. In this study, we explored a virocontrol approach for F. verticillioides based on the use of a heterologous mycovirus, Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1). For the artificial transfection of F. verti
