INTRODUCTION: Accurate radiographic detection and classification of periodontal osseous defects are essential for prognosis and surgical planning in regenerative periodontology. Traditional diagnostic methods offer limited morphological information, and interpretation can be operator-dependent. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have shown potential in medical image analysis, but their application to detailed classification of periodontal defects on periapical radiographs remains underexplored.
METHODS: A total of 7464 periapical radiographs were retrospectively collected from th

Grade II furcation defects pose a significant therapeutic challenge in periodontology due to their complex anatomy and limited accessibility for effective regeneration. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the efficacy of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using a bioresorbable collagen membrane compared to open flap debridement (OFD) alone in 48 patients with mandibular molar Grade II furcation defects. Clinical parameters (probing depth, clinical attachment level, horizontal probing depth and gingival recession) and radiographic bone fill were assessed at baseline and 6 months postoperativ

Periodontal furcation defects are usually addressed by the placement of a physical barrier which may limit the regenerative potential of periodontal wounds. This study morphometrically quantified the regenerative effect of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in furcation defects in a non-human primate model. Grade II furcation defects (with and without induced inflammation prior to surgery) were created on the first and second molars of eight non-human primates. Defects were treated with open flap debridement and subsequently filled with either: Group A; BDNF (500 µg mL-1 ) in high-molecu

The aim of the experiment was to describe the formation of periodontal tissues in degree III furcation defects following GTR therapy. The study was performed in 8 foxhound dogs. The 2nd and 4th premolars in both sides of the mandible were extracted. Furcation defects were produced in the 3rd mandibular premolars. 3 weeks later, reconstructive surgery was performed. The dogs were scheduled for sacrifice 2, 4, 8, and 20 weeks after GTR therapy. Tissue blocks containing the experimental teeth were excised, demineralized in EDTA and embedded in paraffin. Serial sections were cut in the mesio-dista

The origin of fibroblasts, their proliferative activity and roles in the early stages of periodontal repair were investigated in order to better understand the periodontal healing process in furcation defects of the beagle dog after guided tissue regenerative therapy. Newly divided cells were identified by immunolocalization of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) injected 1 hour prior to sacrificing the animals. At 1 and 2 weeks after creation of the defects, the lesions were occupied primarily by granulation tissue. Under this condition, periodontal ligaments (PDL) fibroblasts in a coronal portion of th

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of barrier membrane exposure on the success of guided tissue regeneration in Class II furcation defects. Twenty-six subjects with mandibular Class II furcation defects received initial periodontal therapy followed by guided tissue regeneration surgery. The membrane was placed and the flaps were repositioned so that the membrane was totally submerged. Membranes were removed 4 to 6 weeks later, at which time the extent of their exposure was recorded. An overall improvement in all clinical parameters was observed for all subjects 1 year

OBJECTIVE: To study the regeneration of periodontal tissue after the application of beta-TCP/BMP artificial bone to class II furcation defects.
METHODS: Periodontal defects were produced surgically around premolar teeth in 4 dogs. The flap surgery was performed and the root surfaces were curetted to remove the periodontal ligament and the cementum. A synthetic bioabsorble barrier manufactured from poly DL-lactide was used. The defects were divided into 3 groups (beta-TCP/BMP + PDLLA, PDLLA, control). 12 weeks after surgery, the animals were sacrificed and the teeth with their supporting perio

The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in clinical attachment when either a non-resorbable ePTFE membrane or an absorbable collagen membrane was used as a barrier during surgical treatment of class II molar furcation defects. Thirteen patients, mean age 43.2 years, with two comparable class II molar defects were treated using a split mouth design. Pre-surgical standardized probings were made using an automated probe at a constant force of 25 grams. Four to 6 weeks after initial therapy, the furcations were surgically debrided, the membranes placed to occlude separate furcation de

Intramarrow penetration (IMP), which involves the perforation of the cortical bone to access the bone marrow, is an effective and novel approach for treating advanced furcation defects. The present case report explores the use of a regenerative technique combining IMP and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in treating a mandibular grade II furcation defect. A 47-year-old male patient presented with pain in the lower right back region of the jaw. Initial non-surgical therapy, followed by a regenerative procedure involving IMP, bone graft placement, and resorbable membrane coverage, was employed.

OBJECTIVE: Absorbable membranes are used to promote the regeneration of periodontal defects by Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR). However, their collapse into the defect is commonly reported, impairing regeneration. Therefore, absorbable but rigid membranes aiming at preventing such collapse were developed and analyzed in periodontal regeneration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Membranes were analyzed in class II furcation defects in dogs; procedures included periodontal disease induction, prophylaxis and GTR (treated groups) or open flap debridement alone (control group). For GTR, the membranes were

OBJECTIVE: Collagen hydrogel scaffold exhibits bio-safe properties and facilitates periodontal wound healing. However, regenerated tissue volume is insufficient. Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2) up-regulates cell behaviors and subsequent wound healing. We evaluated whether periodontal wound healing is promoted by application of collagen hydrogel scaffold in combination with FGF2 in furcation defects in beagle dogs.
METHODS: Collagen hydrogel was fabricated from bovine type I collagen with an ascorbate-copper ion cross-linking system. Collagen hydrogel was mingled with FGF2 and injected into

In periodontitis patients, furcation defects are crucial sites to regenerate due to their complex anatomy. Various modern surgical techniques and use of biomaterials have been suggested in the literature. Among all, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has potential in tissue regeneration thanks to its role in the release of growth factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the beneficial effect of the addition of PRF to open flap debridement (OFD) or as an adjuvant to other biomaterials such as bone grafts in the treatment of grade 2 mandibular furcation defects. Systematic research
