Core Microbiome of Slovak Holstein Friesian Breeding Bulls' Semen.

Bacterial contamination of semen is an important factor connected to the health status of bulls that may significantly affect semen quality for artificial insemination. Moreover, some important bovine diseases may be transmitted through semen. Up to now, only a very limited number of complex studies describing the semen microbiome of bulls have been published, as many bacteria are hard to cultivate using traditional techniques. The 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing strategy allows for the reliable identification of bacterial profiles of bovine semen together with the detection of noncultivab

[Gradenigo syndrome and cavernous sinus thrombosis in fusobacterial acute otitis media].

In this era of antimicrobial medication, intracranial complications following otitis media are rare. We present a 5-year-old boy who suffered from petrositis (Gradenigo syndrome) and cavernous sinus thrombosis as combined complications of acute otitis media caused by fusobacteria. The diagnosis was made using imaging methods suited to the various structures of the skull. Cure was achieved by prolonged conservative treatment with antibiotics, with gallium scan for evaluation of the bone inflammation.

Metagenomic analysis of the uterine bacterial microbiota in healthy and metritic postpartum dairy cows.

At present, many bacterial species are validly known as etiological agents of dairy cattle metritis, yet the vast uncultured fraction has received no attention so far. The purpose of this study was to use culture-independent methods to describe and compare the uterine bacterial composition in healthy and metritic postpartum Holstein dairy cows. Both group-specific 16S ribosomal DNA PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and clone library sequencing of broad-range 16S ribosomal DNA PCR revealed differences in the bacterial communities comparing healthy and metritic cows. Bacterial d

Sneathia: an emerging pathogen in female reproductive disease and adverse perinatal outcomes.

Sneathia is an emerging pathogen implicated in adverse reproductive and perinatal outcomes. Although scarce, recent data suggest that vaginally residing Sneathia becomes pathogenic following its ascension into the upper urogenital tract, amniotic fluid, placenta, and foetal membranes. The role of Sneathia in women's health and disease is generally underappreciated because the cultivation of these bacteria is limited by their complex nutritional requirements, slow growth patterns, and anaerobic nature. For this reason, molecular methods are typically required for the detection and differential

Isolated facial vein thrombophlebitis: a variant of lemierre syndrome.

Lemierre syndrome is a rare complication of acute tonsillitis. It is caused by the anaerobic bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum and is characterized by bacteremia and septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein. Dissemination of septic emboli may occur. The diagnosis can be difficult since different organs can be involved. We discuss a case of Lemierre syndrome in a 35-year-old woman with isolated thrombophlebitis of the facial vein and fusobacteria growth in blood culture. This case emphasizes the need for awareness of the condition.

Effect of intestinal tapeworms on the gut microbiota of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic protozoans, helminths, alter the gut microbiota in mammals, yet little is known about the influence of intestinal cestodes on gut microbiota in fish. In the present study, the composition and diversity of the hindgut microbiota were determined in the intestine of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) infected with two tapeworm species, Khawia japonensis and Atractolytocestus tenuicollis. RESULTS: The intestine contained a core microbiota composed of Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria and Tenericutes. Infection with the two cestode species had no significant effect on the microbial div

Lemierre's syndrome: the forgotten disease.

Lemierre's syndrome is an often un-diagnosed disease seen in previously healthy young subjects, presenting with symptoms of pharyngitis, fever and elevated markers of inflammation. The syndrome is characterised by infectious thrombosis of the jugular vein due to infection with Fusobacteria, causing a variety of infectious complications. Rapid diagnosis and treatment is necessary to avoid severe complications or death. Close collaboration with local microbiologist is pivotal. Treatment consists of longterm treatment with penicillin and metronidazole. This is a case report of Lemierre's syndrome

Relationship between thick or greasy tongue-coating microbiota and tongue diagnosis in patients with primary liver cancer.

Tongue diagnosis is a unique aspect of traditional Chinese medicine for diagnosing diseases before determining proper means of treatment, but it also has the disadvantage of relying on the subjective experience of medical practitioners and lack objective basis. The purpose of this article is to elucidate tongue-coating microbiota and metabolic differences in primary liver cancer (PLC) patients with thick or greasy tongue coatings. Tongue-coating samples were analyzed in 60 PLC patients (30 PLC with thick or greasy tongue-coating patients and 30 PLC with tongue-coating neither thick nor greasy)

The oral and conjunctival microbiotas in cats with and without feline immunodeficiency virus infection.

The oral and conjunctival microbiotas likely play important roles in protection from opportunistic infections, while also being the source of potential pathogens. Yet, there has been limited investigation in cats, and the impact of comorbidities such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection has not been reported. Oral and conjunctival swabs were collected from cats with FIV infection and FIV-uninfected controls, and subjected to 16S rRNA gene (V4) PCR and next generation sequencing. 9,249 OTUs were identified from conjunctival swabs, yet the most common 20 (0.22%) OTUs accounted for 76

Lactobacilli are prominent in the initial stages of polymicrobial infection of dental pulp.

In earlier studies we used molecular methods to identify the major bacterial consortia associated with advanced dentin caries. These consortia are dominated by bacteria from the families Lactobacillaceae, Streptococcaceae, Veillonellaceae (formerly Acidaminococcaceae), Eubacteriaceae, and Lachnospiraceae from the phylum Firmicutes; Coriobacteriaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae, and Propionibacteriaceae from the phylum Actinobacteria; and Prevotellaceae from the phylum Bacteroidetes, as well as fusobacteria. The phases of infection of vital pulp tissue by dentin microorganisms remain obscure. In the pr

Characterization of diet-linked amino acid pool influence on Fusobacterium spp. growth and metabolism.

The genus Fusobacterium contains multiple proteolytic opportunistic pathogens that have been increasingly linked to colorectal cancer (CRC). "Oncomicrobes" such as these fusobacterial species within the gut microbiota may contribute to CRC onset and/or progression. Protein-rich diets may both directly increase CRC risk and enrich for proteolytic oncomicrobes, including Fusobacterium spp. Individual food substrates vary in amino acid content, and released amino acid content that is not absorbed in the small intestine may influence the growth of colonic proteolytic fermenters. Fusobacteria such

Microbiota shows major difference in case of two shorebird species with different feeding strategy.

Despite the well-known effects of the gut microbiota on mammals, other vertebrates have only recently begun receiving attention in research. Our study focused on describing the cloacal microbiome of Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) and Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola), using 16S rRNA metabarcoding, to understand how different foraging methods can affect their microbiome. Assessing the host microbial diversity, we found that Shannon- (W = 253, p = 0.099), Simpson- (W = 268, p = 0.168) and inverse Simpson- diversities (W = 268, p = 0.168) did not differ significantly, however, there was a tend

Vaginal Dysbiotic Microbiome in Women With No Symptoms of Genital Infections.

The vaginal microbiome plays a critical role in determining the progression of female genital tract infections; however, little is known about the vaginal microbiota of Indian women. We aimed to investigate the vaginal microbial architecture of women with asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis (BV) (n=20) and normal microbiota (n=19). Microbial diversity was analyzed in vaginal swabs from regularly menstruating women (18-45yrs) by 16S rRNA V3-V4 amplicon (MiSeq Illumina) sequencing. Rarefaction analysis showed a higher number of species in normal flora compared to BV. Alpha diversity as measured by

Human reference microbiome profiles of different body habitats in healthy individuals.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to establish the human reference microbiome profiles in blood, saliva, and stool of healthy individuals, serving as reference values to identify microbiome alterations in human disease. METHODS: The study population consisted of a reference group of healthy adults and a second group consisting of adults with periodontal disease (PD). Blood, saliva, and stool samples were subjected to 16S rRNA sequencing. Reference intervals of alpha diversity indices were calculated. To reduce the effects of inherent limitations of microbiome data, the taxonomic profiles of the

Impact of Enterobius vermicularis infection and mebendazole treatment on intestinal microbiota and host immune response.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on the association of enterobiasis and chronic inflammatory diseases have revealed contradictory results. The interaction of Enterobius vermicularis infection in particular with gut microbiota and induced immune responses has never been thoroughly examined. METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: In order to answer the question of whether exposure to pinworm and mebendazole can shift the intestinal microbial composition and immune responses, we recruited 109 (30 pinworm-negative, 79 pinworm-infected) first and fourth grade primary school children in Taichung, Taiwan, for a gut micr

Changes in Vaginal Microbiome in Pregnant and Nonpregnant Women with Bacterial Vaginosis: Toward Microbiome Diagnostics?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is highly common, adversely affecting the health of millions of women. New therapeutic targets and diagnostics are urgently needed for BV. Microbiome research offers new prospects in this context. We report here original findings on changes in the vaginal microbiome in pregnant and nonpregnant women with BV. Reproductive age women were recruited for this study after a clinical examination. The total sample (N = 33) included four study groups: (1) healthy nonpregnant women (n = 9), (2) nonpregnant women with symptomatic BV (n = 11), (3) healthy pregnant women without BV
