Fusobacterium necrophorum pelvic peritonitis and bacteremia mimicking intestinal necrosis.

Fusobacterium necrophorum infection is known to cause Lemierre's syndrome, not pelvic peritonitis. Herein, we report a case of Fusobacterium necrophorum pelvic peritonitis and bacteremia, without Lemierre's syndrome, mimicking intestinal necrosis. A 28-year-old woman with peritoneal irritation and shock was suspected of having intestinal necrosis due to the presence of hepatoportal venous gas and pneumatosis intestinalis. Intestinal necrosis was ruled out by emergency laparotomy. However, massive opaque ascites and inflammatory changes in the uterus and fallopian tubes were observed. Fusobacte

Necrobacillosis: A case report of complicated Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia.

Necrobacillosis due to Fusobacterium necrophorum is an uncommon anaerobic infection. It has a wide range of presentations and commonly presents as Lemierre's syndrome. We present a case of necrobacillosis defined by F. necrophorum bacteremia with epidural and pararectal fluid collection without evidence of internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis.

Two cases of fatal meningitis due to Fusobacterium necrophorum.

It is extremely important to consider Fusobacterium necrophorum as a cause of meningitis in children after otitis or other upper respiratory tract infections, because of its increasing incidence. A high index of suspicion and prompt microbiological identification are mandatory; as this organism is often penicillin-resistant, prolonged antibiotic therapy is required and invasive infection carries a high risk of fatal cerebral vessel thrombosis. This report presents two fatal cases who presented to our pediatric intensive care unit in December 2004.

Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia following Epstein-Barr virus infectious mononucleosis.

We report herein a case of a 20-year-old previously healthy man who presented, 25 days after the onset of clinically and serologically confirmed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infectious mononucleosis, Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia. The diagnosis of postanginal septicemia was confirmed by repeated demonstration of fusiform, obligate anaerobic, Gram-negative bacilli in anaerobic blood cultures, identified as F. necrophorum 15 days after admission. This case report aims at underlining the need of taking into consideration the possibility of severe Fusobacterium septicemia in previously healthy

Fusobacterium necrophorum infections in England and Wales 1990-2000.

In response to a marked increase in both the number of Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteraemia reports to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre and the number of F. necrophorum isolates referred to the PHLS Anaerobe Reference Unit in 1999, the data from both sources on F. necrophorum infections were reviewed for the decade 1990-2000. There were 208 reports of F. necrophorum bacteraemia (average 19/year; range 14-34/year) with a peak in incidence in the late winter months; 68% were from male patients and the peak age range was 16-23 years. Of 205 referred isolates of F. necrophorum, 1

Antibody development to Fusobacterium necrophorum in patients with peritonsillar abscess.

A polymicrobial mixture of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria is commonly recovered from peritonsillar abscess (PTA) aspirates. Previous studies have suggested a role for Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) in the development of PTA. The purpose of the current study was to explore whether anti-FN antibodies were produced in patients with PTA. We developed a novel immunofluorescence-based method to measure anti-FN antibody levels in acute and convalescent sera from 15 patients with PTA and 47 patients with chronic tonsillar conditions (controls) undergoing acute or elective tonsillectomy, respectively.

Fusobacterium necrophorum endocarditis Case report and review of the literature.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a gram-negative anaerobic bacillus that can cause serious systemic infections typically in previously healthy young adults. Lemierre's syndrome, also known as post-anginal sepsis or necrobacillosis, is the infection most usually associated with F. necrophorum. However, F. necrophorum is also a very rare cause of anaerobic endocarditis. Mortality and rates of thromboembolism are high with F. necrophorum endocarditis. In this article, we describe a case of F. necrophorum native valve infective endocarditis. The patient was treated with penicillin plus clindamycin fol

Tonsillar colonisation of Fusobacterium necrophorum in patients subjected to tonsillectomy.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a well-known cause of Lemirre's disease and accumulating evidence support its pathogenic role in peritonsillar abscess while its role in recurrent and chronic tonsillitis is uncertain. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of oropharyngeal colonisation with F. necrophorum and Beta-haemolytic streptococci in a cohort of patients scheduled for tonsillectomy due to recurrent or persistent throat pain, and to evaluate the dynamics of colonisation with repeated sampling during a follow-up time of 6 to 8 months. METHODS: Fifty-seven (57) p

Localised Fusobacterium necrophorum infections: a prospective laboratory-based Danish study.

During a 3-year prospective laboratory-based study in Denmark from 1998 to 2001, all patients who were diagnosed with localised Fusobacterium necrophorum infections were registered with the purpose of describing the variety of localised infections caused by F. necrophorum, especially in the head. We found 267 patients, most of them previously healthy, with localised F. necrophorum infections in the head and neck. In children, F. necrophorum caused otitis media and solitary abscess formation in cervical lymphadenitis. In adolescents, F. necrophorum was found in 21% of peritonsillar abscesses. W

Fusobacterium necrophorum-induced sepsis: an unusual case of Lemierre's syndrome.

Classical Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by severe sepsis with metastatic abscess formation in young, previously fit people from a primary head or neck focus. The causative organisms are the anaerobic fusobacteria, most commonly Fusobacterium necrophorum. We describe the evaluation, therapeutic interventions and management of a patient with Lemierre's syndrome who presented in septic shock with multiple organ dysfunction. The patient required immediate interventions including endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, fluid resuscitation, inotropic support, bilateral thoracostom

Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia complicated by liver abscess. A case report.

A previously healthy 27-year-old man developed Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia complicated by a solitary liver abscess. This is an unusual course of necrobacillosis, in addition to Fusobacterium necrophorum being a rare cause of anaerobic liver abscesses. The patient was treated with percutaneous drainage and a prolonged course of ampicillin and metronidazole therapy. He had a successful recovery.

Intersecting Pathologies: Vulvar Cancer Complicated by a Fusobacterium necrophorum Infection.

Vulvar cancer represents a small minority of annual cancer cases in America. This malignancy affects more than the physical health of the patient. This malignancy also has a negative impact on women's psychological and sexual health. This case pertains to a 49-year-old woman (G1P1001) who presented with right groin pain, fever, and chills for three days. She reported experiencing vaginal bleeding during the intercourse and had been able to palpate a mass inside her vagina for the past five years. A pelvic exam revealed a 6 cm tender mass on the left vaginal wall, which was friable and hemorrha

Fusobacterium necrophorum in North American Bighorn Sheep ( Ovis canadensis ) Pneumonia.

Fusobacterium necrophorum has been detected in pneumonic bighorn sheep (BHS; Ovis canadensis ) lungs, in addition to the aerobic respiratory pathogens Mannheimia haemolytica , Bibersteinia trehalosi , Pasteurella multocida , and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae . Similar to M. haemolytica , F. necrophorum produces a leukotoxin. Leukotoxin-induced lysis and degranulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and macrophages are responsible for acute inflammation and lung tissue damage characteristic of M. haemolytica -caused pneumonia. As one approach in elucidating the role of F. necrophorum in BHS p

Fusobacterium necrophorum causing infective endocarditis and liver and splenic abscesses.

A 25-year-old male without prior co-morbidities was admitted to hospital with Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia, where he was found to have liver and splenic abscesses. Further evaluation with echocardiography revealed a bicuspid aortic valve with severe insufficiency and a 1.68 x 0.86 cm vegetation. The patient required abscess drainage, intravenous antimicrobial therapy and aortic valve replacement. Complete resolution of the infection was achieved after valve replacement and a prolonged course of intravenous antimicrobial therapy. A brief analysis of the patient's clinical course and rev

[Pneumonia caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum: is Lemierre syndrome still current?].

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a non-spore-forming gram-negative anaerobic bacillus that may be the causative agent of localized or severe systemic infections. Systemic infections due to F.necrophorum are known as Lemierre's syndrome, postanginal sepsis or necrobacillosis. The most common clinical course of severe infections in humans is a progressive illness from tonsillitis to septicemia in previously healthy young adults. A septic thrombophlebitis arising from the tonsillar veins and extending into the internal jugular vein leads to septicemia and septic emboli contributing to the development

Fusobacterium necrophorum: most prevalent pathogen in peritonsillar abscess in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Group A streptococci are commonly regarded as the most prevalent cause of acute bacterial tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess (PTA). However, the majority of PTA aspirates also contain strains of anaerobes, and accumulating evidence indicates that Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) could be involved in acute tonsillitis.
