The correlation of gagging threshold with intra-oral tactile and psychometric profiles in healthy subjects: A pilot study.

Excessive gag reflex could be problematic for adequate dental care. Although various factors may increase the susceptibility to gagging, its contributing factors have not been fully determined. This study aimed to determine whether gag reflex was associated with tactile sensitivity and psychological characteristics. Fifteen volunteers of healthy males and females each were recruited for this study. After completing a questionnaire describing the self-perceived gag reflex activity, a disposable saliva ejector was inserted along the palate into the mouth until gagging was evoked. The ratio of th

Overlap between dental anxiety, gagging and Blood-Injection-Injury related fears - A spectrum of one multidimensional phenomenon.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dental anxiety (DA) and gagging (GAG) are prevalent problems that severely impact social behavior and quality of life. Furthermore, because dental phobia is considered a Blood-Injection-Injury (B-I-I) phobia, the present study contrasted DA, GAG and control subjects regarding the severity of dental anxiety and investigated the comorbidity of GAG, DA and B-I-I fears. METHODS: Demographics, Verbal Pain Scale (VPS), Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), Decay, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT), Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) and response to phobic stimuli were collected f

Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the shorter form of the gagging problem assessment questionnaire.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the shorter form of the gagging problem assessment questionnaire. Forty-three patients with gagging problems and 89 patients who showed no signs of gagging during dental examination were included in the study. The patients completed the patient portion of the gagging problem assessment questionnaire, as well as the modified dental anxiety scale, dental fear scale and Spielberger trait anxiety scale for comparison. Two experienced dentists subsequently completed the dentist portion of the gagging proble

Management of gag reflex for patients undergoing dental treatment.

BACKGROUND: The gag reflex is an involuntary defence mechanism to protect the pharynx and throat from foreign objects. Gagging is a common problem encountered during dental treatment, making therapeutic procedures distressing and often difficult or even impossible to perform. Various interventions can be used to control the gag reflex: anti-nausea medicines, sedatives, local and general anaesthetics, herbal remedies, behavioural therapies, acupressure, acupuncture, laser, and prosthetic devices. This is an update of the Cochrane Review first published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect

HIV-1 gag: an emerging target for antiretroviral therapy.

The advances made in the treatment of HIV-1 infection represent a major success of modern biomedical research, prolonging healthy life and reducing virus transmission. There remain, however, many challenges relating primarily to side effects of long-term therapy and the ever-present danger of the emergence of drug-resistant strains. To counter these threats, there is a continuing need for new and better drugs, ideally targeting multiple independent steps in the HIV-1 replication cycle. The most successful current drugs target the viral enzymes: protease (PR), reverse transcriptase (RT), and in

GAG-binding variants of tick-borne encephalitis virus.

Previously different authors described various flavivirus mutants with high affinity to cell glycosaminoglycans and low neuroinvasiveness in mice that were obtained consequently passages in cell cultures or in ticks. In present study the analysis of TBEV isolates has shown existence of GAG-binding variants in natural virus population. Affinity to GAG has been evaluated by sorption on heparin-Sepharose. GAG-binding phenotype corresponds to such virus properties, like small plaque phenotype in PEK cells, absence of hemagglutination at pH 6.4, and low neuroinvasiveness in mice. Mutations increasi

Altering the gag reflex via a palm pressure point.

BACKGROUND: The gag reflex regularly interferes with dental procedures. The authors hypothesize that applying pressure to a specific point on the palm alters the gag reflex and that hypersensitive gag reflexes may be categorized according to oropharyngeal landmarks. METHODS: Thirty-six neurologically intact subjects underwent a series of gag reflex trials (baseline, sham and treatment). The authors developed a hand pressure device for subjects to wear, which provided a consistent force, and they described a gag trigger point index (GTPI) scale. On the basis of the GTPI, they divided subjects

Sulphated glycosaminoglycans (S-GAGs) and syndecans in the bovine oviduct.

In vivo, bull sperm capacitation seems to occur mainly in the oviduct. Capacitation of bull spermatozoa can be triggered in vitro by exposure to heparin, a heavily sulphated glycosaminoglycan (S-GAG). We determined the concentration of S-GAGs in oviductal fluid from dairy heifers, collected over the course of several oestrous cycles via surgically implanted intraluminal catheters. We also investigated the presence of syndecans, i.e. heparan sulphate proteoglycans, in the bovine oviductal epithelium of Swedish dairy cattle during standing oestrus and the luteal phase of the oestrous cycle, usin

Galactosaminogalactan (GAG) and its multiple roles in Aspergillus pathogenesis.

Aspergillus spp and particularly the species Aspergillus fumigatus are the causative agents of invasive aspergillosis, a progressive necrotizing pneumonia that occurs in immunocompromised patients. The limited efficacy of currently available antifungals has led to interest in a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of invasive aspergillosis in order to identify new therapeutic targets for this devastating disease. The Aspergillus exopolysaccharide galactosaminogalactan (GAG) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of experimental invasive aspergillosi

New horizons for GAG therapy in the management of urothelial damage.

Urothelial defects may manifest as various types of signs of symptoms such as frequency and urgency, haematuria and pain. Both prevention and treatment of urothelial damage is fundamental. Many currently adopted treatments lack robust clinical data and are associated with variability in management strategies. Glycosoaminoglycan (GAG) therapy is one of the most promising therapies in treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy-induced urothelium defects, and has been investigated in both animal models and clinical studies.

Mutant murine leukemia virus Gag proteins lacking proline at the N-terminus of the capsid domain block infectivity in virions containing wild-type Gag.

We have investigated the properties of murine leukemia virus Gag mutants in which the p12-CA cleavage site is altered. In one mutant, the cleavage is blocked; in the other, the conserved proline at the N-terminus of CA has been replaced with glycine. No infectivity was detected in either mutant. Mutant particles cannot synthesize full-length DNA upon infecting permissive cells. Particles composed of a mixture of wild-type and mutant proteins have severely impaired infectivity. These mixed particles are defective in their ability to synthesize DNA upon infection, but this defect is less severe

Gag Protein Oriented Supramolecular Nets as Potential HIV Traps.

For HIV/AIDS treatment, the cocktail therapy which uses a combination of anti-retroviral drugs remains the most widely accepted practice. However, the potential drug toxicity, patient tolerability, and emerging drug resistance have limited its long-term efficiency. Here, we design a HIV Gag protein-targeting redox supramolecular assembly (ROSA) system for potential HIV inhibition. An assembling precursor was constructed through conjugation of an oxidation-activatable fluorogenic compound BQA with a selected tetrapeptide GGFF. Since BQA shares a similar structure with the known Gag inhibitor, t

An earplug technique to reduce the gag reflex during dental procedures.

BACKGROUND: The gag reflex is a frequent problem occurring during dental treatment procedures, especially while making impressions of the maxillary teeth. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a simple earplug as an external auditory canal stimulator to supress the profound gag reflex and as a second step, to map areas of the oropharynx suppressed by this technique. METHODS: In the first step of the study, 90 patients who had a gag reflex during the impression procedure were allocated to a study group, a sham group, and a control group for evaluating the efficacy of the earplug t

A long-term therapeutic treatment for patients with a severe gag reflex.

"Hypnopuncture," a combination treatment of hypnosis and acupuncture, provides a therapeutic treatment plan for long-term therapy for patients with a distinctive gag reflex. The treatment is applied independently of the cause. In cases of emergency treatment in dentistry, the immediate compliance of a patient is of utmost importance. The long-term goal of any therapeutic measure is control of the gag reflex. A new treatment protocol is illustrated in the case of a 50-year-old patient with a severe gag reflex. After only 5 visits, dental treatment could be conducted without any auxiliary means.
