Affordable gait analysis using augmented reality markers.

A typical optical based gait analysis laboratory uses expensive stereophotogrammetric motion capture systems. The study aims to propose and validate an affordable gait analysis method using augmented reality (AR) markers with a single action camera. Image processing software calculates the position and orientation of the AR markers. Anatomical landmark calibration is applied on the subject to calibrate each of the anatomical points with respect to their corresponding AR markers. This way, anatomical points are tracked through AR markers using homogeneous coordinate transformations, and the fur

Electromyographic temporal analysis of gait: hemiplegic locomotion.

The telemetered electromyographic (EMG) activity of quadriceps, hamstrings, triceps surae and pretibial muscles on the affected side of 20 adult hemiplegic subjects was examined during locomotion. The subjects ranged in age from 29 to 68 years (mean, 52.1). Duration of the lesions ranged from 1 month to 8 years: in 11 subjects the duration of the lesions ranged from 1 to 9 months (mean, 4.9 months), and in the remaining 9 subjects from 1 to 8 years (mean, 4 years 2 months). Shoes with five microswitches, two in the heel and three in the sole, were used to correlate the EMG activity with eight

Gait stability in peripheral artery disease: a phase-dependent analysis using gait tube methodology.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) affects over eight million U.S. adults, impairing mobility, quality of life, and increasing fall and cardiovascular risks. PAD reduces lower limb blood flow and contributes to neuromuscular dysfunction, leading to unstable gait. Traditional stability metrics often miss phase-specific changes. Gait Tube Stability (GTS) is a phase-dependent, three-dimensional method that analyzes center of mass (COM) velocity using ellipsoidal variability to detect directional instability. This study examined whether GTS can identify phase-specific gait deficits in P

A Multicenter Standardized Gait Database from the ORITEL Network for Cerebral Palsy Gait Analysis.

Gait analysis is a cornerstone of clinical decision-making in cerebral palsy (CP), yet multicenter variability limits comparability and translation. This work reports the creation of a standardized, multicenter gait database and a machine learning (ML) classifier to distinguish gait patterns of CP hemiplegia, CP diplegia, and typically developing group to validate the database. Data is contributed by eight ORITEL motion analysis laboratories (156 sessions, 582 trials) using two systems (Vicon/BTS), with unified nomenclature, unit normalization, and resampling. For classification, 95 sessions (

Gait analysis - Available platforms for outcome assessment.

Movement or gait analysis has become a viable assessment tool not only used in sports science or basic biomechanical research, but has also expanded to be a very valuable instrument in clinical diagnostics, monitoring functional recovery and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. In this context, this method has long been an integral part solely in neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy. However, in the meantime the benefits have also become apparent in other medical areas, such as foot surgery, orthopaedic technology, or in patients after lower limb amputation. These procedures proved to bett

Metatarsal Loading During Gait-A Musculoskeletal Analysis.

Detailed knowledge of the loading conditions within the human body is essential for the development and optimization of treatments for disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. While loads in the major joints of the lower limb have been the subject of extensive study, relatively little is known about the forces applied to the individual bones of the foot. The objective of this study was to use a detailed musculoskeletal model to compute the loads applied to the metatarsal bones during gait across several healthy subjects. Motion-captured gait trials and computed tomography (CT) foo

Automated feature assessment in instrumented gait analysis.

A methodological modular framework is presented for automated assessment of gait patterns. The processing steps of data selection, gait parameter calculation and evaluation are not limited to a specific field of application and are largely independent of case-based clinical expert knowledge. For these steps, a variety of mathematical methods was used and the validity of the approach to assess gait parameters tested by applying it to the clinical problem of Botulinum Toxin A (BTX-A) treatment of the spastic equinus foot. A set of 3670 parameters was ranked by relevance for classification of a g

[Gait analysis of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus].

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a clinical syndrome associated with dementia, gait disturbance and urinary incontinence. Gait disturbance is usually the initial sign and most important symptom, but its objective evaluation has not been established. We analyzed the gait of an idiopathic NPH before and after ventricular shunting with the gait analysis system. Before shunting, the stride was short and irregular, and the truncal movement was unsteady. Three-dimensional patterns of angular relationships between 3 joints, namely the ankle, knee and hip were small and irregular. The vector pro

[Tridimensional gait analysis after unilateral subtalar arthrodesis].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Subtalar arthrodesis can be useful in various conditions. Initially used for the treatment of congenital or acquired foot deformities, it was later applied to surgical repair of traumatic injury. The subtalar joint does however play an important role in gait, particularly for transmitting rotational movement of the leg to the foot. The functional outcome after subtalar arthrodesis has been the object of many studies. These studies examined clinical and radiological results and raised the problem of determining the appropriate extent of the fusion. None of these studies ha

Three-dimensional gait analysis in spina bifida.

This study was designed to determine gait patterns in children with lumbar and sacral neurologic level spina bifida. We studied a group of 28 children: 10 had L4-level lesions and a mean age of 11 years; eight had L5-level lesions and a mean age of 8 years; and 10 had S1-level lesions with a mean age of 12 years. A group of 15 normal children, mean age 10 years, was used for comparison. Each child underwent three-dimensional gait analysis using the Vicon system. We found that there were recognisable gait patterns for each level of spina bifida and that the abnormalities accurately reflected th

Investigation of Gait Characteristics and Kinematic Deviations in Rare Genetic Disorders with Instrumented Gait Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dravet Syndrome (DS), Helsmoortel-Van Der Aa Syndrome (HVDAS) and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) are rare genetic syndromes, sharing intellectual disability (ID) and motor delay. In DS, two distinct gait patterns, crouch and non-crouch, have been described using instrumented 3D gait analysis (i3DGA). This cross-sectional study measures gait in participants with TSC and HVDAS. The findings are compared to the known crouch and non-crouch gait patterns observed in DS and to typical gait. METHODS: Participants (6-22 years) with DS (n = 37; 19 crouch and 18 non-crouch), HVDAS (n = 12

Evaluation of gait in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Relation of 3D gait analysis to clinical assessment.

Walking ability in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) deteriorates progressively until complete loss of the function. Interventions aimed at maintaining ambulatory ability relies on accurate clinical-based scores and evaluations of walking. This kind of assessment has intrinsic limitations. A 3D optoelectronic system could provide elements useful for the functional evaluation of patients with DMD. Nineteen boys with DMD were evaluated using the 6-Minutes Walking Test, North Star Ambulatory Assessment and 3D gait analysis. Participants' gait parameters were compared to those of an age-matched co

Unstable gait due to spasticity of the rectus femoris: gait analysis and motor nerve block.

We present the case of a 54 year-old man presenting with a right Brown-Séquard plus syndrome (BSPS) after a traumatic cervical spinal cord injury. After being operated on with selective tibial neurotomy and triceps surae lengthening because of a right spastic equinus foot, he developed a gait disorder at high speed. The patient complained about an instability of the right knee. Observational gait analysis exhibited an oscillating, flexion/extension motion of the right knee during stance, which was confirmed by gait analysis. Dynamic electromyographic recordings exhibited a clonus of the right

Force-sensing treadmill gait analysis system can detect gait abnormalities in haemophilia patients without arthropathy.

BACKGROUND: Joint damage in patients with haemophilia (PwH) is commonly assessed by imaging, but few reports have described how structural changes in joints, for example, haemophilic arthropathy (HA)-affect gait ability. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated gait function among PwH with HA, PwH without HA, and people without haemophilia (non-PwH) using a Zebris FDM-T treadmill (FDM-T), an easy-to-use gait assessment instrument with a force sensor matrix. METHODS: The following gait parameters were collected: centre of pressure trajectory intersection (COPi) anterior/posterior variability, COPi lateral va

Instrument-supported gait analysis characterizes gait domain changes in patients with suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible cause of cognitive impairment, urinary incontinence, and gait disturbances, which typically present with a characteristic slow, shuffling, and wide-based gait. Gait velocity, which is reduced relative to healthy controls, improves in iNPH patients following a spinal tap test. This study aimed at evaluating the criterion of a 20% gait velocity improvement in the 10 m walk test to identify responders and non-responders in a cohort of patients with probable iNPH receiving a spinal tap test as well as the added
