Reversible Deactivation of Motor Cortex Reveals Functional Connectivity with Posterior Parietal Cortex in the Prosimian Galago (Otolemur garnettii).

UNLABELLED: We examined the functional macrocircuitry of frontoparietal networks in the neocortex of prosimian primates (Otolemur garnettii) using a microfluidic thermal regulator to reversibly deactivate selected regions of motor cortex (M1). During deactivation of either forelimb or mouth/face movement domains within M1, we used long-train intracortical microstimulation techniques to evoke movements from the rostral division of posterior parietal cortex (PPCr). We found that deactivation of M1 movement domains in most instances abolished movements evoked in PPCr. The most common effect of de

Cortical connections to single digit representations in area 3b of somatosensory cortex in squirrel monkeys and prosimian galagos.

The ventral posterior nucleus of thalamus sends highly segregated inputs into each digit representation in area 3b of primary somatosensory cortex. However, the spatial organization of the connections that link digit representations of areas 3b with other somatosensory areas is less understood. Here we examined the cortical inputs to individual digit representations of area 3b in four squirrel monkeys and one prosimian galago. Retrograde tracers were injected into neurophysiologically defined representations of individual digits of area 3b. Cortical tissues were cut parallel to the surface in

Organization of cholinergic, catecholaminergic, serotonergic and orexinergic nuclei in three strepsirrhine primates: Galago demidoff, Perodicticus potto and Lemur catta.

The nuclear organization of the cholinergic, catecholaminergic, serotonergic and orexinergic systems in the brains of three species of strepsirrhine primates is presented. We aimed to investigate the nuclear complement of these neural systems in comparison to those of simian primates, megachiropterans and other mammalian species. The brains were coronally sectioned and immunohistochemically stained with antibodies against choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, serotonin and orexin-A. The nuclei identified were identical among the strepsirrhine species investigated and identical to pr

Thalamic connections of the caudal part of the posterior parietal cortex differ from the rostral part in galagos (Otolemur garnettii).

In this study, thalamic connections of the caudal part of the posterior parietal cortex (PPCc) are described and compared to connections of the rostral part of PPC (PPCr) in strepsirrhine galagos. PPC of galagos is divided into two parts, PPCr and PPCc, based on the responsiveness to electrical stimulation. Stimulation of PPC with long trains of electrical pulses evokes different types of ethologically relevant movements from different subregions ("domains") of PPCr, while it fails to evoke any movements from PPCc. Anatomical tracers were placed in both dorsal and ventral divisions of PPCc to

A preliminary investigation of the relationship between ovarian steroids, LH, reproductive behaviour and vaginal changes in lesser bushbabies (Galago moholi).

Urinary hormone profiles, determined by means of radioimmunoassays, were aligned with changes in mating behaviour and vaginal morphology and cytology during the ovarian cycles of adult, female lesser bushbabies (Galago moholi), a prosimian species. Intromission occurred in all seven females, 2.0 +/- 1.1 days (mean +/- SEM, median = 0) after the occurrence of vaginal opening, and lasted for 4.1 +/- 0.7 days. Three females subsequently gave birth. Vaginal swelling and labial reddening were initiated at least 2.5 +/- 0.5 days before vaginal opening and lasted 10.4 +/- 0.9 days. Pro-oestrous and v

Origins of anthropoid intelligence. III. Role of prefrontal system in delayed-alternation and spatial-reversal learning in a prosimian (Galago senegalensis).

A species of prosimian (bush baby, Galago senegalensis) was tested on delayed-alternation and spatial-reversal learning before and after ablation of prefrontal cortex. The results show that normal performance on the two behavioral tasks depend on different subdivisions of the MD-prefrontal system. Delayed alternation is disrupted by prefrontal lesions which cause degeneration in the lateral division of MD while spatial-reversal learning is disrupted by lesions causing degeneration of the medial division of MD. Therefore, the bush baby prefrontal system can be subdivided either on behavioral or

Interactions within and between parallel parietal-frontal networks involved in complex motor behaviors in prosimian galagos and a squirrel monkey.

Long-train intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of motor (M1) and posterior parietal cortices (PPC) in primates reveals cortical domains for different ethologically relevant behaviors. How functional domains interact with each other in producing motor behaviors is not known. In this study, we tested our hypothesis that matching domains interact to produce a specific complex movement, whereas connections between nonmatching domains are involved in suppression of conflicting motor outputs to prevent competing movements. In anesthetized galagos, we used 500-ms trains of ICMS to evoke complex mov

Organization of the posterior parietal cortex in galagos: II. Ipsilateral cortical connections of physiologically identified zones within anterior sensorimotor region.

We studied cortical connections of functionally distinct movement zones of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in galagos identified by intracortical microstimulation with long stimulus trains ( approximately 500 msec). All these zones were in the anterior half of PPC, and each of them had a different pattern of connections with premotor (PM) and motor (M1) areas of the frontal lobe and with other areas of parietal and occipital cortex. The most rostral PPC zone has major connections with motor and visuomotor areas of frontal cortex as well as with somatosensory areas 3a and 1-2 and higher ord

The distribution, number, and certain neurochemical identities of infracortical white matter neurons in the brains of a southern lesser galago, a black-capped squirrel monkey, and a crested macaque.

In the current study, we examined the number, distribution, and aspects of the neurochemical identities of infracortical white matter neurons, also termed white matter interstitial cells (WMICs), in the brains of a southern lesser galago (Galago moholi), a black-capped squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis), and a crested macaque (Macaca nigra). Staining for neuronal nuclear marker (NeuN) revealed WMICs throughout the infracortical white matter, these cells being most dense close to inner cortical border, decreasing in density with depth in the white matter. Dorsal column nuclei in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis). II. Cuneate and lateral cuneate nuclei: morphology and primary afferent fibers from cervical and upper thoracic spinal segments.

The morphology and brachial cord primary afferent projections of the cuneate and lateral cuneate nuclei have been studied in the lesser bushbaby. The cuneate nucleus was divided into three regions. From caudal to rostral these were the large cell, cell column and rostral regions. Primary afferents from C2, C4, C6, C7, C8, T1 and T3 terminated within distinct partially overlapping terminal zones in the ipsilateral large cell and cell column regions of the cuneate nucleus (CN) and the lateral cuneate nucleus (LCN). Segmentotopic was the greatest in the rostal region of the CN due to a more diffu

A regional reconnaissance on yellow fever in the Sudan; with special reference to primate hosts.

Neutralization-tests with yellow fever virus performed on 666 human sera collected in the southern Sudan imply that yellow fever is still endemic south of the 10th parallel, in the south-west border of the Nuba Mountains, and in the plains west of the Nuba Mountains as far north as El Muglad. Similar tests on bloods from 110 primates revealed a high rate of immunity among both baboons (Papio sp.) (94%) and grivet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) (77%), and a very low rate (1 in 56) among galagos (Galago senegalensis). It would therefore appear that, in contrast to the baboon and the grivet mon

Myological correlates of prosimian leaping.

Although the skeletal correlates of vertical clinging and leaping behavior in primates have been studied in great detail, myological information on this locomotor group is not readily available. We here provide relative muscle mass data for the hindlimb of four prosimian leapers, representing indriids as well as the small-bodied tarsiers and galagos. Wet weights of all hindlimb muscles, with the exception of the intrinsic muscles of the foot, were determined. For comparative purposes muscle weights were also gathered for Varecia, an arboreal quadruped, and previously unpublished dry muscle wei

The reorganization of the motor system in primates after the loss of a limb.

As a result of an extensive search, we were able to obtain a limited number of macaque monkeys, New World squirrel monkeys, and prosimian galagos years after they had received a therapeutic amputation of a forelimb or hindlimb as a treatment for injury. Forelimb or hindlimb regions of primary motor cortex, M1, were stimulated in these primates with microelectrodes using amounts of current just sufficient to evoke a movement. Results were compared to those obtained from normal primates or from M1 contralateral to the intact limb in the same primates. In all cases, more sites in M1 contralateral

Judith Masters and Fabien Génin: An unwavering union in strepsirrhine evolution.

This preamble honors the late evolutionary primatologists Judith Masters and Fabien Génin, synthesizing their profound impact on strepsirrhine anatomy, systematics, and biogeography. Over four decades, Masters applied Hugh Paterson's Recognition Concept of species alongside comprehensive craniodental morphometrics and phylogenetics to reframe the evolutionary trees of nocturnal African galagos, culminating in the formal description of the dwarf galago genus Paragalago. Génin complemented this systematic framework by linking sensory ecology with comparative physiology, providing groundbreaking

Pterygodermatites nycticebi (Nematoda: Rictulariidae): accidental detection of encapsulated third-stage larvae in the tissue of a white-fronted marmoset.

Twin, white-fronted marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) born and raised in a zoo in Japan died at 7 mo of age. Several encapsulated nematode larvae were detected in the intestinal wall, as well as a few in the mesenteric lymph nodes of 1 of the twins. In the other marmoset, no encapsulated nematode larva was detected in the organs, but many adult Pterygodermatites nycticebi were found in the intestinal lumen. In the past 5 yr, 5 primates kept in the same zoo, i.e., 1 squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), 2 Pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), 1 Senegal galago (Galago senegalensis), and 1 cotton-top

Cortical connections of MT in four species of primates: areal, modular, and retinotopic patterns.

Cortical connections were investigated by restricting injections of WGA-HRP to different parts of the middle temporal visual area, MT, in squirrel monkeys, owl monkeys, marmosets, and galagos. Cortex was flattened and sectioned tangentially to facilitate an analysis of the areal patterns of connections. In the experimental cases, brain sections reacted for cytochrome oxidase (CO) or stained for myelin were used to delimit visual areas of occipital and temporal cortex and visuomotor areas of the frontal lobe. Major findings are as follows: (1) The architectonic analysis suggests that in additio

Hydatid disease in four nonhuman primates.

Hydatid disease was detected in 4 nonhuman primates (Galago crassicaudatus, Lemur catta, and 2 Macaca mulatta) at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center. Involvement extended from 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years. A 6-cm cyst was surgically removed from the thoracic cavity of 1 macaque; 6 years later multiple cysts were found in its abdominal cavity. Lesions found in the primates at necropsy included compression or displacement of the lungs, hydroureter and hydronephrosis, and distension of the abdomen--all related to impingement of developing cysts.
