Gallic acid can play a chondroprotective role against AGE-induced osteoarthritis progression.

BACKGROUND: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a group of stable covalent compounds generated by proteins, lipids, other macromolecules and sugar through a series of non-enzymatic reactions. As reported, AGEs can cause widespread pathophysiological responses through activation of AGE receptors (RAGEs) on the cell surface, and play an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). We hypothesized that the antioxidant and anti-glycan agent gallic acid (GA) can work against the effects of AGEs and can be used as a potential drug for the cure of OA. METHODS: The present study

Anxiolytic and cognitive effects of dietary phenolics in zebrafish: rosmarinic acid, gallic acid, and 3-hydroxytyrosol.

INTRODUCTION: Rosmarinic acid (RA), gallic acid (GA), and 3-hydroxytyrosol (3-HT) are phenolic compounds abundant in medicinal plants traditionally used to support cognitive function and neurological wellbeing. Although their antioxidant and neuroprotective properties are well documented in mammalian systems, their behavioral effects remain insufficiently explored in alternative in vivo models relevant for ethnopharmacological screening. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the anxiolytic and cognitive-enhancing potential of RA, GA, and 3-HT in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Compounds were

Fe3+-induced coordination cross-linking gallic acid-carboxymethyl cellulose self-healing hydrogel.

Self-healing hydrogel is a promising soft material for applications in wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetic electronic skin, and wearable electronic devices. However, it is a challenge to fabricate the self-healing hydrogels without external stimuli. Inspired by mussel, the metal-catechol complexes were introduced into the hydrogel systems to prepare the mussel-inspired hydrogels by regulating the gelation kinetics of Fe3+ crosslinkers with gallic acid (GA) in this research. The amine-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted with GA and then chelated w

Anti-inflammatory effects of gallic acid in human gestational tissues in vitro.

Spontaneous preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity globally. Activation of the maternal immune system leads to a downstream cascade of proinflammatory events that culminate in the activation of spontaneous uterine contractions and the rupture of the foetal membranes. Anti-inflammatory agents may be a novel therapeutic approach to prevent inflammation-induced myometrial contractions and premature rupture of foetal membranes. The polyphenol gallic acid has been previously shown to exert potent anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effe

The vasorelaxant effect of gallic acid involves endothelium-dependent and -independent mechanisms.

The mechanisms of action involved in the vasorelaxant effect of gallic acid (GA) were examined in the isolated rat thoracic aorta. GA exerted a relaxant effect in the highest concentrations (0.4-10mM) in both endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded aortic rings. Pre-incubation with L-NAME, ODQ, calmidazolium, TEA, 4-aminopyridine, and barium chloride significantly reduced the pEC50 values. Moreover, this effect was not modified by indomethacin, wortmannin, PP2, glibenclamide, or paxillin. Pre-incubation of GA (1, 3, and 10mM) in a Ca(2+)-free Krebs solution attenuated CaCl2-induced contract

Gallic acid-based small-molecule inhibitors of JC and BK polyomaviral infection.

JCPyV and BKPyV are common human polyomaviruses that cause lifelong asymptomatic persistent infections in their hosts. In immunosuppressed individuals, increased replication of JCPyV and BKPyV cause significant disease. JCPyV causes a fatal and rapidly progressing demyelinating disease known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. BKPyV causes hemorrhagic cystitis and polyomavirus associated nephropathy in bone marrow transplant recipients and in renal transplant recipients respectively. There are no specific anti-viral therapies to treat polyomavirus induced diseases. Based on detailed

Hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers by gallic acid and the application in pressure sensing.

Via rational molecular structure design and using gallic acid (GA) for hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanofibers (CNF), the "polymer dipole" CNF-GA with hydrophilic main chains and hydrophobic side chains was prepared, which improved the poor piezoelectric properties of CNF used for preparing pressure sensors. Due to the appearance of the side chains, the elongation at break of the CNF-GA-2, compared with CNF, was enhanced by 186 %, and the excellent tensile strength, puncture load, and tearing strength were displayed. Moreover, the significant glass transition temperature (Tg) near the

Theogallin-to-Gallic-Acid Ratio as a Potential Biomarker of Pu-Erh Teas.

There are two types of Pu-erh tea available on the world market: Raw and Ripe. It is not difficult to tell them apart if the Raw version is relatively young. Researchers have already developed various tools to identify Pu-erh teas. However, they are quite complicated and require advanced statistical analyses. In addition, they are characterized by different levels of accuracy. The aim of the work was to identify relationships or differences that would easily give specific results for identifying types of Pu-erh tea. The content of selected methylxanthines was determined by high-performance liq
