Fatal Sarcocystis calchasi-associated meningoencephalitis in 2 captive vulturine guineafowl.

Two captive vulturine guineafowl (Acryllium vulturinum) were presented with lethargy, hyporexia, weight loss, and progressive neurologic signs. One of the guineafowl was seropositive for Sarcocystis falcatula (1:50 dilution). Both guineafowl died within 5 d of presentation. Histologic examination revealed nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis with gliosis, associated with occasional schizonts in the neuropil. Using fresh-frozen brain tissue, PCR was performed to amplify the ITS1 RNA region and portions of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene (18S gene) and the 28S ribosomal RNA gene (28S gene). Analysis of

A new species of the genus Amyrsidea (Phthiraptera: Amblycera: Menoponidae) parasitizing domestic chickens in Saudi Arabia.

Amyrsidea Ewing, 1927 is a genus of chewing lice comprising 52 species, divided into five subgenera: Amyrsidea sensu stricto, Argimenopon Eichler, 1947, Cracimenopon Carriker, 1954, Desumenopon Carriker, 1954 and Numidimenopon Scharf & Price, 1977 (see Price et al. 2003: 86), which parasitise a wide range of hosts belonging to the avian order Galliformes (see Price et al. 2003: 321). Species of Amyrsidea can be distinguished from species of Menacanthus Neumann, 1912-the other menoponid genus with species parasitic on the same hosts-by lacking ventral spinous processes in the head (Scharf & Pri

Improvement in plaquing methods for the enumeration of anatid herpesvirus (duck plague virus).

The Holland strain of anatid herpesvirus (AHV) was 2-to 10-fold more efficiently plaqued under liquid medium or semisolid medium containing methylcellulose than in media containing agar, agarose, or Nobel agar. Virus adsorption was complete in 45 min, with the maximum virus titers obtained under liquid medium at 48 h postinfection. The AHV dose-response curve was linear. Pekin duck embryo cultures were more efficient than CCL-141 in plaque response and gave the maximum virus yield per cell. Virus titers were independent of avian cell passage number (to 6), fetal or newborn calf sera (to 10% v/

Pesticide Poisoning in Indian Peafowl Pavo cristatus from Tamil Nadu: A Continuing Threat to India's National Bird.

Pesticide poisoning poses a continuing threat to wildlife, particularly avian species such as the Indian Peafowl Pavo cristatus, which holds ecological and cultural significance in India. Despite increasing reports of mass mortalities of the National bird across the country, confirmed and reported, cases of pesticide poisoning remain limited. In this study, eight mass mortality incidents involving death of 121 Indian Peafowls were investigated in Tamil Nadu between 2019 and 2021. Five separate tissue samples from each of 41 individuals were analysed for the presence of 45 pesticides using Liqu

Faster fowl fall frequently: speed and force regulation during turning maneuvers by guinea fowl on high and low friction terrains.

Safely navigating variable terrains requires animals to balance competing demands of speed, stability, maneuverability and injury avoidance. Straight-line locomotion has been extensively studied, but less is known about how animals coordinate turning maneuvers. The physics of turning creates a coupling between speed, turn sharpness and ground reaction force (GRF) demands, resulting in a trade-off between speed and maneuverability. Here, we investigated locomotor strategies as guinea fowl navigated turns in high and low friction substrates. We measured center of mass trajectories and GRF in fou

A velocity-loop view of avian gait: hodograph rotation sense characterizes the walking-to-running continuum in guinea fowl.

Terrestrial gaits are usually treated as discrete categories, yet the criteria that define them disagree in ground birds, which use grounded-running, bouncing dynamics without an aerial phase, over much of their speed range. We asked whether the rotation sense of the center-of-mass velocity loop, the hodograph, resolves gait-transition speeds in guinea fowl (Numida meleagris). We reconstructed center-of-mass motion from ground reaction forces over 2580 level overground steps (dimensionless speed range: 0.14 to 3.27). Hodograph rotation sense reverses from pendular to bouncing at a crossover sp

Egg Overspray with Herbicides and Fungicides Reduces Survival of Red-Legged Partridge Chicks.

Within the environmental risk assessment conducted for pesticide registration in the European Union (EU), avian reproductive toxicity is characterized after exposing adults. However, eggs of ground-nesting species can be exposed when pesticide applications occur during laying or incubation. We simulated environmentally realistic exposure of red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) eggs to an herbicide (2,4-D) and a fungicide (tebuconazole) applied to winter cereal crops during the breeding season of most farmland birds. We analyzed the effects on hatching success, offspring survival, and physiolo

Ascaridiasis in peafowl Pavo cristatus (Phasianidae) due to Ascaridia galli Schrank, 1788.

Twelve white peafowl (Pavo cristatus) affected by an outbreak of an intestinal disease were referred for more detailed examination at the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz-BA, Brazil. During the course of the disease, peachicks were severely affected, with enteric signs such as diarrhea plus dehydration, decreased feed intake and progressive weight loss. After examination, 8 of 12 samples (66.6%) presented single or mixed nematode infection and Ascarid eggs were the most frequent finding on fecal examination. Adult peafowl did not present clinical signs even when positive after fecal exam. M

Common Diseases of Michigan Gamebirds: A Retrospective Study.

Michigan has abundant resources for outdoor activity including upland gamebird hunting in the wild and on licensed hunting preserves. Due to the popularity of hunting, Michigan had a thriving gamebird industry before the economic downturn of 2008/2009. After the economic downturn, the number of gamebird preserves decreased. To understand the health issues faced by captive gamebird raisers while the industry was thriving, a 25-year retrospective study of gamebird submissions to the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from 1983 through 2008 was undertaken. Although pheasan

Exploring the visual system of the black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix): combining experimental and molecular approaches to inform strategies for reducing collisions.

Understanding the visual systems of birds can inform conservation efforts and mitigate the impact of collisions with human-made structures. Here, we investigated the visual abilities of the black grouse, Lyrurus tetrix (Galliformes: Phasianidae), a European mountain bird highly vulnerable to collisions with aerial infrastructures. We show that black grouse have wide monocular lateral visual fields, extensive binocular overlap and a minimal blind area behind the head, altogether indicating the ability to detect aerial objects from different fields of view. The spatial resolution and contrast se

Ascaridia pavo n. sp. (Nematoda: Ascaridida), a new species of nematode in peafowl.

A new Ascaridiidae has been found parasitizing Pavo cristatus, an exotic bird bred on a commercial farm in the Pará Amazon. The new species of Ascaridia Dujardin, 1845 is described on the basis of light and scanning microscopy findings. Morphologically, the new species shares characteristics compatible with the other species of Ascaridia that parasitize birds in Brazil, however, the new species differs from A. pintoi and A. ornata in the length and absence of a wing on the spicules, A. hermaphrodita, A. serrata, A. columbae, A. galli, A. lineata, A. magalhaesi, A. numidae, A. orthocerca, A. pt

Syngamus asphyxiation in a captive ring-necked pheasant.

A deceased ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) presented for necropsy following a history of chronic wasting. Necropsy revealed nematodes consistent with the genus Syngamus partially obstructing the trachea. Phylogentic analysis failed to reveal conclusive results regarding the species. Syngamus spp. can cause obstruction of the trachea in several different hosts. Additional genetic data from this taxon would aid in the more precise identification of diagnostic specimens.

Large variability of preincubation storage temperature in chukar partridge eggs under normal storage duration: Impact on egg and hatching traits, and embryonic development.

The effect of different storage temperatures on egg traits during storage and incubation, hatching characteristics and embryonic mortality in chukar partridge eggs stored under normal-term storage was investigated in this study. The study was designed as a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with two storage durations (7 and 14 days) and four storage temperatures (3, 9, 15 and 21 °C). After storage, a total of 480 eggs (60 eggs per subgroup) were sent directly to the histology lab to determine the stage of embryonic development. The remaining eggs (50 eggs per each subgroup) were moved to an incubator

Speed from fossil trackways: calculations not validated by extant birds on compliant substrates.

Fossil trackways serve as a valuable tool in understanding the behaviour and locomotion of extinct animals. Calculating speeds from trackways has become a standard approach, particularly for dinosaurs. However, the original equation was derived from predominantly mammalian data. There have been few validation studies using modern birds, the descendants of theropod dinosaurs. We used high-speed video recordings of two helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris) traversing mud of varying consistency. Associated trackways were digitized using photogrammetry, and stride and track lengths were measured

Complex interactions between the gut microbiota, pesticide contamination and physiological traits in grey partridges.

The intensification of agriculture in recent years, particularly through the massive use of pesticides and fertilizers, has caused a decline in biodiversity, specifically among farmland birds. Emerging research highlights the adverse effects of chronic and low-dose pesticide exposure, particularly on the gut microbiota, which is essential for host metabolism and immune health. Understanding how pesticides disrupt microbial diversity and physiological traits is therefore critical to inform management and conservation strategies. This study examines the impact of pesticide contamination on the g

Unexpected Performance in Developing Birds.

Birds are well known for their ability to fly, and flight-capable adult birds have many anatomical specializations for meeting the demands of aerial locomotion. Juvenile birds in altricial species typically acquire these specializations close to fledging and leave the nest with some flight capability. In contrast, juveniles in most precocial species begin navigating their environment with rudimentary anatomies and may not develop full-sized wings or musculoskeletal apparatuses for several months. This manuscript explores how juvenile birds achieve high levels of locomotor performance in the ab
