Telomere associations in desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma.

A four and a half year old male was diagnosed with desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma. To our knowledge, the cytogenetics of this tumor have never been reported. In our analysis of 40 cells, no consistent clonal abnormalities were observed; however, the majority of cells (25 of 40) showed structural rearrangements (telomere associations) resulting in dicentrics and other derivative chromosomes. Breakpoints most often observed included 17q25 (6 of 40), 19p13.3 (4 of 40), 17p13 (3 of 40), 14q32 (3 of 40), 11q25 (3 of 40), 9p24 (2 of 40), 5q35 (2 of 40), and 22q13 (2 of 40).

Cerebellomedullary ganglioglioma: CT and MR findings.

We present a case of cerebellomedullary ganglioglioma in a young child with indolent clinical symptoms. CT demonstrated a region of hypodensity with central contrast enhancement in the right cerebellar hemisphere and the inferior peduncle. On MR the lesion was iosintense on T1-weighted images with fairly homogeneous enhancement with gadolinium, and of high signal intensity on T2-weighted images.

A novel histopathological grading system for ganglioglioma.

Gangliogliomas are central nervous system tumors located in the temporal lobe of young patients, frequently associated with epilepsy. In this paper, we propose a grading system based solely on histopathological criteria. We reevaluated all cases of ganglioglioma, atypical ganglioglioma, and anaplastic ganglioglioma diagnosed between 2011 and 2020 in the Pathology Department of the Emergency Clinical Hospital Bagdasar-Arseni, based on the type of glial mitoses, the number of neuronal and glial mitoses, presence of necrosis, microvascular proliferation, eosinophilic granular bodies, hypercellula

Unusual ganglioglioma with extensive calcification and ossification.

Ganglioglioma is a slow-growing relatively low-grade mixed glioneuronal tumor with most cases corresponding to the WHO Grade I category. It frequently presents with seizures. The temporal lobe is the most common location followed by frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. These generally behave in a benign fashion and have a favorable prognosis. We describe a case of a 24-year-old male presenting with convulsions and a calcified parieto-occipital mass. This mass removed from the parietal lobe showed neoplastic glial and dysplastic neuronal tissue amidst extensive areas of calcification and foc

Desmoplastic noninfantile ganglioglioma: report of a case.

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma is a rare superficial supratentorial tumor that occurs within the first two years of life. Despite the worrisome radiological and histological appearance, the tumors are often curable following gross total resection. Tumors with similar characteristics are exceedingly rare in the noninfantile population. We present a six-year-old boy with seizures, weakness, and unsteady gait. Radiographic imaging confirmed a very large, solid and cystic mass in the right temporal-parietal region. Pathological examination demonstrated a tumor with severe desmoplasia identic

[Ganglioglioma of the pineal region: case report].

Ganglioglioma are tumors presenting neoplastic glial cells and nerve cells, very rarely found in the pineal region. Only eight cases have been previously published in the literature. We present the case of a 14 years-old male patient with a ganglioglioma of the pineal region. The patient was treated surgically by a suboccipital transtentorial approach with complete removal. Histopathologic specimens with immunostaining revealed a ganglioglioma grade I. We conclude that these tumors are rare and should be treated surgically aiming total remove. If it is not possible or in case of reocurrence th

Hyperadrenocorticism Caused by a Pituitary Ganglioglioma in a Dog.

An 11-year-old castrated male Chihuahua dog was presented with complaints of polyuria, polydipsia, abdominal enlargement, and alopecia. Hyperadrenocorticism was diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs, blood tests, adrenocorticotropin-stimulation test results, and an elevated serum adrenocorticotropin concentration. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed that the pituitary gland was enlarged, compatible with a pituitary macroadenoma. Pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism was suspected, and transsphenoidal hypophysectomy was thus performed for complete resection of the tumor. A

Cervicomedullary Ganglioglioma in a Child - A Case Report.

Ganglioglioma is a benign slow-growing neoplasm that most frequently occurs at the supratentorial region. Nevertheless, there are occasional reports of ganglioglioma occurring in the brainstem and spinal cord. Here we report a rare case of the craniocervical ganglioglioma. A 3.5-year-old male, presented with severe progressive quadriparesis, gait disturbance, and sphincter deficit. Physical examination demonstrated the quadriparesis, associated with positive Hoffman, Babinski, and clonus signs, and increased respond of deep tendon reflexes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an ill-

Atypical Presentation of a Pediatric Cerebellar Ganglioglioma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gangliogliomas (GGs) are rare central nervous system tumors occurring primarily in the supratentorial compartment with infratentorial instances most often involving the brain stem. Infratentorial GGs typically present with signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure (ICP), cranial nerve deficits, or focal cerebellar findings; rarely, these tumors have been associated with focal seizures. METHODS: In this report, we describe an atypical presentation of a cerebellar GG in a 20-month-old male who initially presented with syncope and emesis in the absence of electrograp

Desmoplastic non-infantile ganglioglioma in late adulthood.

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma (DIG) is an uncommon supratentorial neuroepithelial brain tumor that typically occurs in infants younger than 24 months. Desmoplastic non-infantile ganglioglioma (DNIG) is a rare variant of this intracranial neoplasm. There are only 16 DNIG cases reported in the literature, with all patients under the age of 25 at the time of presentation. These DIG and DNIG cases were radiologically and histologically similar, with good outcome after treatment. Despite the size and high mitotic index for patients with DNIG, the prognosis is generally favorable and gross to

Supratentorial ganglioglioma and epilepsy: postoperative seizure outcome.

Ganglioglioma is increasingly recognized as being a cause of epilepsy. However, controversy still exists regarding the type of surgery required for optimal seizure control. To find out the factors associated with seizure outcome and to clarify treatment guidelines, a retrospective analysis of 29 epileptic patients who had pathologically proven gangliogliomas that were operated on at our institute during a 13-year period, was performed. There were 23 temporal and six extratemporal gangliogliomas, with a mean age of 16.5 years at surgery. Epilepsy was medically intractable in 14 (48.3%) patients

Ganglioglioma in the nasal cavity: a case report.

Ganglioglioma is a tumor containing both astrocytic and neuronal components. It may occur any where in the central nervous system and spinal cord but is only encountered rarely. Nasal glial heterotopia (also known as ''nasal glioma''), is a rare developmental abnormality seen in a wide age group. Gangliogliomas may also manifest as a nasal glial heterotopia, and neurogenic tumors should be considered in the presence of a nasal mass. In this article, we present a case of ganglioglioma located in the right-nasal cavity. The mass was excised totally through an endoscopic approach. The ganglioglio

The clinical significance of extracellular matrix in gangliogliomas.

Based on in vitro studies which demonstrate that collagen IV and laminin inhibit the proliferation and invasiveness of glioma cells, we investigated the clinical significance of these extracellular matrix proteins (ECM) in patients with gangliogliomas, tumors in which ECM is often a prominent feature. Our study compared the relative presence and deposition pattern of collagen IV and laminin in 19 gangliogliomas and in 18 gliomas without ganglion cell differentiation (8 low-grade astrocytomas, 7 anaplastic astrocytomas, and 3 anaplastic mixed gliomas). We also examined whether the presence of c

Desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas: an approach to therapy.

Desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas are massive cystic tumors, typically occurring in the cerebral hemispheres of infants. They are remarkable pathologically for a prominent desmoplasia and, in some cases, for a cellular mitotically active component that can be readily interpreted as a malignant neoplasm. Four children less than 1 year of age were diagnosed with desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas in the Pediatric Oncology Group infant brain tumor study (Protocol number 8633). All had been diagnosed by their respective institutions as having malignant tumors, i.e., Grade III astrocytoma, m

Glioneuronal Tumor With Features of Ganglioglioma and Neurocytoma Arising in the Fourth Ventricle: A Report of 2 Unusual Cases and a Review of Infratentorial Gangliogliomas.

Infratentorial glioneuronal neoplasms are overall quite rare and are more commonly low-grade with surgical excision usually being curative. Multiple distinct histologic entities have been described including rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor, papillary glioneuronal tumor, neurocytoma, dysplastic gangliocytoma of the cerebellum (Lhermitte-Duclos disease), cerebellar liponeurocytoma, and ganglioglioma. While each of these entities has distinct findings, in some instances a tumor may demonstrate overlapping histologic features with mixed components. Herein, we report 2 unusual adult cases of a f

Desmoplastic Infantile Ganglioglioma Masquerading as an Arachnoid Cyst.

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma (DIG) is a rare supratentorial brain tumor, which is usually diagnosed before the age of two and has a favorable prognosis. To date, only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of DIG in a three-month-old boy who presented to our pediatric emergency department with decreased activity and excessive crying. This case report highlights the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of this rare tumor. Non-contrast CT scan findings in our case initially masqueraded as an extra-axial arachnoid cyst; however

Pediatric primary anaplastic ganglioglioma with malignant neuronal component.

The study focuses on the development of a first-generation liposomal-based vaccine for Leishmania. This vaccine uses a cloned gene encoding the Leishmania homologue of receptors for activated C-Kinase (LACK) along with interleukin 12 (IL-12). The research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a liposomal DNA vaccine that combines a recombinant plasmid with a cytokine adjuvant to protect against Leishmania major (L. major). A cationic lipid formulation was developed using a blend of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (DOTAP), dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE), and cholesterol in a

Progression of atypical extraventricular neurocytoma to anaplastic ganglioglioma.

We report a childhood case of thalamic atypical extraventricular neurocytoma that progressed to highly anaplastic ganglioglioma after 8 years of dormancy after subtotal resection and chemotherapy. The neurocytoma displayed immunoreactivity only for synaptophysin, β-catenin, S100, and CD56. The ganglioglioma acquired strong immunoreactivity for chromogranin, glial fibrillary acidic protein, neuron-specific enolase, and p53 and showed a very high proliferation rate approaching 50% in some areas. Tumor transformation was associated with overexpression of components of the sonic hedgehog and Wnt d

Intraventricular ganglioglioma with bleed: a rare case report.

Gangliogliomas are benign lesions that are predominantly temporal in location and present with chronic epilepsy. Intraventricular gangliogliomas are extremely rare and still rarer is intratumoral hemorrhage. Till date only 9 cases of lateral ventricular gangliogliomas have been reported. To the best of our knowledge only 1 case of intratumoral hemorrhage has been reported. We report a rare case of lateral ventricular ganglioglioma with intratumoral hemorrhage in a 27-year-old man.
