Evidence to support that adventitial cysts, analogous to intraneural ganglion cysts, are also joint-connected.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare condition in which cyst is found within a vessel, typically producing symptoms of vascular compromise. Most commonly located in the popliteal artery near the knee, it has been reported in arteries and veins throughout the body. Its pathogenesis has been poorly understood and various surgical approaches have been recommended. We extrapolated some recent information about a similar condition, intraneural ganglion cyst affecting the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve, to the prototype, CAD of the popliteal artery. In intraneural ganglion cysts affecting the d

Treatment of temporomandibular joint ganglion cyst.

Ganglion cysts of the temporomandibular joint are very rare and always misdiagnosed as synovial cyst, parotid gland tumor, or other cystic lesions. They present with pain, swelling, or dysfunction. Image studies could facilitate to identify the tumor mass from the adjacent soft tissue, but a definitive diagnosis could be made from the pathologic report.A 59-year-old woman presented to the clinics with a chief complaint of a painless swelling mass in the right preauricular region of 3-month duration. Computed tomography was performed, which showed a small radiolucent lesion adjacent to the righ

Patterns of intraneural ganglion cyst descent.

On the basis of the principles of the unifying articular theory, predictable patterns of proximal ascent have been described for fibular (peroneal) and tibial intraneural ganglion cysts in the knee region. The mechanism underlying distal descent into the terminal branches of the fibular and tibial nerves has not been previously elucidated. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate if and when cyst descent distal to the articular branch-joint connection occurs in intraneural ganglion cysts to understand directionality of intraneural cyst propagation. In Part I, the clinical records and MRIs

Spontaneous hemorrhage in a lumbar ganglion cyst.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of a subacute radiculopathy resulting from a spontaneous hemorrhage into a lumbar ganglion cyst. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Ganglion and synovial cysts of the lumbar spine are becoming more frequent, and they are generally associated with degenerative lumbar spinal disease. Few cases of hemorrhage into lumbar juxtafacet cysts after trauma or anticoagulation therapy have been described in the literature. METHODS: A case of a spontaneous hemorrhage in a lumbar ganglion cyst is presented. RESULTS: A 61-year-old man presented with a 2-m

Intraneural ganglion cyst of the tibial nerve.

Intraneural ganglion cyst of the tibial nerve is very rare. To date, only 5 cases of this entity in the popliteal fossa have been reported. We report a new case and review the previously reported cases. A 40-year-old man experienced a mild vague pain in the medial half of his right foot for 3 years. Magnetic resonance imaging scan demonstrated a soft-tissue mass along the right tibial nerve. At surgery, an intraneural ganglion cyst was evacuated. After 12 months, the patient was pain-free with no signs of recurrence. Trauma might be a contributing factor to the development of intraneural gangl

[The subchondral synovial cyst (intraosseous ganglion)].

Twelve cases of subchondral synovial cysts (intra-osseous ganglion) have been seen and their clinical features, radiological findings and differential diagnosis are described. The lesion is a benign cystic tumour-like mass in the subchondral portion of a synovial joint. Our findings in respect of age, sex and localisation are compared with those of other authors. The aetiology and pathogenesis of the lesion is not completely understood. There is an increased incidence in middle life and joints with high dynamic and static stress are favoured, particularly in the lower extremities. Chronic stre

Ganglion Cysts in the Hallux: A Report of Two Cases.

We experienced two cases of intractable hallux ganglion. Case 1 was a 70-year-old woman with a recurrent ganglion and severe pain on the plantar aspect of the hallux. The continuity between the mass and the distal flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon sheath was confirmed. The ganglion was resected along with part of the tendon sheath, and the tendon sheath was incised as proximally as possible. Case 2 was a 69-year-old woman with a ganglion on the dorsal aspect of the interphalangeal joint that repeatedly ruptured due to thinning of the skin. The ganglion was contiguous with the joint capsule b

Surgical treatment of recurrent proximal tibio-fibular joint ganglion cysts.

BACKGROUND: Complex symptomatic ganglion cysts arising from the proximal tibio-fibular joint (PTJ) are not an uncommon presentation in specialist knee clinics and can be managed by aspiration or excision. There is, however, a high rate of recurrence and often there is progressive involvement of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) and its branches, and permanent nerve damage may result. METHODS: This study is a review of the outcome of recalcitrant and recurrent cyst disease with CPN involvement treated by proximal fibulectomy. Nine patients with clinical and radiological diagnosis of a ganglion c

Operative treatment for ganglion cysts of the foot and ankle.

The authors analyzed the clinical results of surgical excision for symptomatic or recurrent ganglion cysts of the foot and ankle, and tried to elucidate the prognostic factors. Fifty-three cases of ganglions in the foot and ankle were followed for more than 24 months after excision. The mean duration of follow-up was 3.7 years. As a preceding treatment, 17 cases received a mean of 1.3 aspirations, and 16 cases recurred after a mean of 1.7 operations. The cyst was most common in the dorsum of the foot and ankle, where 35 cases were found. Thirty cases originated from the tendon sheath, 19 cases

Application of three-dimensional rendering in joint-related ganglion cysts.

The origin of para-articular cysts is poorly understood and controversial. The relatively common, simple (extraneural) cysts are presumed to be derived from joints, although joint connections are not always established. Rarer complex cysts are thought by many to form de novo within nerves (intraneural ganglion cysts) or within vessels (adventitial cysts) (degenerative theory). We believe that these simple and complex ganglion cysts are joint-related (articular theory). Joint connections are often not readily appreciated with routine imaging or at surgery. Not identifying and/or treating joint

MR imaging findings in a dog with lumbar ganglion cysts.

Intraspinal cysts of the L6-L7 and L7-S1 articular process joints in a six-year-old neutered female German Shepherd Dog were diagnosed using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Histopathology provided a diagnosis of ganglion cysts. Clinical, laboratory, radiographic and MR imaging findings are described. Briefly, radiographic findings revealed lumbarization of the first sacral vertebra, and fusion of the first caudal vertebra to the sacrum. In addition, spondylosis and articular process osteoarthrosis occurred at L6-L7 and L7-S1. MR imaging revealed multiple, well encapsulated structures ranging

Ganglion cysts in the paediatric wrist: magnetic resonance imaging findings.

BACKGROUND: The majority of published literature on ganglion cysts in children has been from a surgical perspective, with no dedicated radiologic study yet performed. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging appearance of ganglion cysts in a series of paediatric MR wrist examinations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven consecutive paediatric MR wrist examinations were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of ganglion cysts. Only those studies with wrist ganglia were included. Cysts were assessed for location, size, internal characteristics and secondary effec

Intramuscular Ganglion Cyst of the Extensor Digitorum Longus.

BACKGROUND: Ganglion cyst is a mucin-filled synovial cyst. It is the most common mass found in the wrist and hand. However, it is less commonly encountered in the lower extremity and even rarer to be found intramuscularly. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old female presented for a symptomatic mass at the anterolateral left knee. Radiography revealed an intramuscular multiseptated cystic lesion within the extensor digitorum longus muscle. No definite solid components or enhancement of the lesion and no intra-articular extension or capsular communication were observed. Differential diagnosis inclu
