[The perception of urban garbage collectors of Dourados, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, regarding the biological risks involved in their work routine].

There are several occupational risks inherent to urban garbage collection, and the scope of this study was to identify the biological risks to which urban garbage collectors in Dourados/MS are exposed. A qualitative study using the Lefévre and Lefévre Collective Subject Discourse method was used with 42 urban garbage collectors working for the outsourced provider to the Municipal Department of Urban Services. Data were collected from September 2005 to January 2006. The interviews had an average duration of 40 minutes, and were recorded at the company office when the workers arrived to start th

Metal exposure in Brazilian children of waste pickers from the largest open garbage dump in Latin America: Use of deciduous teeth as biomarker.

Environmental exposures to metals is a concern for public health, due to their association with various adverse health outcomes, especially in children. The aim of this study was to analyze 21 metals (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Ag, Cd, Ba, Ti, Pb, U, Sn, Mo, Ce, La, and Th) in deciduous teeth of waste pickers' children from an open garbage dump region (Estrutural region- Group 1), and compare them with children living in two other regions in Brasilia (Ceilandia - Group 2, and Plano Piloto - Group 3). Three hundred and two children participated in the study, and a single deciduous w

Redistribution of garbage codes to underlying causes of death: a systematic analysis on Italy and a comparison with most populous Western European countries based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of reported causes of death (CoDs) that are not underlying causes can be relevant even in high-income countries and seriously affect health planning. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study identifies these 'garbage codes' (GCs) and redistributes them to underlying causes using evidence-based algorithms. Planners relying on vital registration data will find discrepancies with GBD estimates. We analyse these discrepancies, through the analysis of GCs and their redistribution. METHODS: We explored the case of Italy, at national and regional level, and compared it to

Public health utility of cause of death data: applying empirical algorithms to improve data quality.

BACKGROUND: Accurate, comprehensive, cause-specific mortality estimates are crucial for informing public health decision making worldwide. Incorrectly or vaguely assigned deaths, defined as garbage-coded deaths, mask the true cause distribution. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study has developed methods to create comparable, timely, cause-specific mortality estimates; an impactful data processing method is the reallocation of garbage-coded deaths to a plausible underlying cause of death. We identify the pattern of garbage-coded deaths in the world and present the methods used to determine

Waste exposure and skin diseases.

BACKGROUND: Waste is a composite mixture of different substances including endotoxins, organic dust and bio-aerosol stuffed with micro-organisms, and various toxic organic and inorganic chemicals, which may be intrinsically hazardous to human health. Therefore, health risks may derive from direct or indirect contact with garbage. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched for English-language literature describing the relationships between garbage and skin diseases in order to provide a state-of-the-art review on what is currently known about waste exposure effects on skin health. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS:

Images of eyes enhance investments in a real-life public good.

A key issue in cooperation research is to determine the conditions under which individuals invest in a public good. Here, we tested whether cues of being watched increase investments in an anonymous public good situation in real life. We examined whether individuals would invest more by removing experimentally placed garbage (paper and plastic bottles) from bus stop benches in Geneva in the presence of images of eyes compared to controls (images of flowers). We provided separate bins for each of both types of garbage to investigate whether individuals would deposit more items into the appropri

Redistribution of heart failure deaths using two methods: linkage of hospital records with death certificate data and multiple causes of death data.

Heart failure is considered a garbage code when assigned as the underlying cause of death. Reassigning garbage codes to plausible causes reduces bias and increases comparability of mortality data. Two redistribution methods were applied to Brazilian data, from 2008 to 2012, for decedents aged 55 years and older. In the multiple causes of death method, heart failure deaths were redistributed based on the proportion of underlying causes found in matched deaths that had heart failure listed as an intermediate cause. In the hospitalization data method, heart failure deaths were redistributed based

Does living alone increase the consumption of social resources?

China's living arrangement has changed as the economy grows and society makes progress. More and more people prefer to live alone. In 2018, a total of 240 million people chose to live alone in China, with an annual growth of 0.53% per year. How will the growing number of people living alone affect the resources consumption and the ecological environment? Based on the data from 1998 to 2017 at provincial level, this paper selects domestic water and electricity consumption to represent resources consumption, and household garbage generation to represent ecological environment, taking the proport

Qualitative classification of waste garments for textile recycling based on machine vision and attention mechanisms.

The increasing volume of garment waste underscores the need for advanced sorting and recycling strategies. As a critical procedure in the secondary usage of waste clothes, qualitative classification of garments categorizes post-consumer clothes based on types and styles. However, this process currently relies on manual labor, which is inefficient, labor-intensive, and poses risks to workers. Despite efforts to implement automatic clothes classification systems, challenges persist due to visual complexities such as similar colors, deformations, and occlusions. In response to these challenges, t

Xylose reductase generated by yeast Candida tropicalis purified using an aqueous two-phase system optimised by RSM.

Xylitol is a sweetener, which can be produced by Candida yeasts. Xylitol production (XP) is expensive due to the high cost of enzymes production such as xylose reductase (XR). XR can be produced with a low-cost using cashew apple waste (CAW) hydrolysed; however, methods for XR purification are expensive. This study aims to optimise an ATPS using a response surface method (RSM) for xylose reductase (XR) purification. CAW was hydrolysed. Fermentations were conducted using yeast (CCT 1516) for XR production. Then, a RSM varying ATPS composition (polyetilenglycol (PEG, 1.6-2.4 g/L) and potassium p

Is carbonyl detoxification an important anti-aging process during sleep?

Organisms living on the earth may undergo inevitable toxification by biological 'garbage', a variety of bio-metabolites. Such garbage includes a particularly large number of toxic carbonyls, such as alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyls created by free radicals, glycation, and other post-translational side-reactions during various stresses and diseases. The accumulation of these toxic substances and their crosslinking products leads to the formation of different age pigments, such as lipofuscin, lens cataracts, and crosslinked collagen. The diurnal fluctuation in the concentration of the pineal gla

Mutagenic activity of sweepings and pigments from a household-wax factory assayed with Salmonella typhimurium.

The mutagenic activity of garbage originating from a household wax industry was determined by the Salmonella/microsome assay, using the bacterial strains TA100, TA98 and YG1024. The garbage was obtained by sweeping the floor of the factory at the end of the work shift. Organic compounds were extracted by ultrasound for 30 min in dichloromethane or 70% ethanol. After evaporation of solvent, these extracts (HFS: household-wax factory sweepings) were dissolved in DMSO, and were tested for the mutagenic activity at varying concentrations (HFS-ET: 0.08-0.68 mg/plate, HFS-DCM: 0.60-7.31 mg/plate). Performance assessment of reclaimed fly ash-slag geopolymers incorporating waste spent garnet and waste foundry sand under different curing regimes.

Fly ash (FA) landfills are overflowing with materials, and unexplored waste streams like waste spent garnet (WSG) and waste foundry sand (WFS) are often dumped in onsite storage spaces, limiting land availability for future use and exacerbating environmental concerns related to waste disposal. Therefore, this research proposes recycling FA to produce reclaimed FA (RFA) as a binder, replacing 40-60 % of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and 30-50 % of river sand (RS) with WSG and WFS to produce geopolymers. The performance of geopolymers was assessed under different curing regimes, i

Energy and carbon-efficient one-pot bioprocessing for upcycling non-sterile food waste into high-yield 2,3-butanediol production.

Food waste is a significant global issue whose unsatisfactory management leads to greenhouse gas emissions and loss of resources. Repurposing food waste from landfills to sustainable bioprocessing supports the circular bioeconomy. This study explores converting non-sterile food waste into 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO), a versatile chemical, using a one-pot bioprocessing (OPB) method which integrates enzymatic saccharification and fermentation to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Optimizing solid-to-liquid ratios (20 % w/v), inoculum sizes (10 % vol.) of Klebsiella pneumoniae strain PM2, and ferm

Systematic surveillance tools to reduce rodent pests in disadvantaged urban areas can empower communities and improve public health.

Rodents are notorious pests, known for transmitting major public health diseases and causing agricultural and economic losses. The lack of site-specific and national standardised rodent surveillance in several disadvantaged communities has rendered interventions targeted towards rodent control as often ineffective. Here, by using the example from a pilot case-study in the Bahamas, we present a unique experience wherein, through multidisciplinary and community engagement, we simultaneously developed a standardised national surveillance protocol, and performed two parallel but integrated activit

Cause of death certificates in nursing homes: Does quality matter? A retrospective review from two counties in Norway.

AIMS: One half of Norwegians die in nursing homes, where death certificates (DCs) are completed by two types of physicians: in-house physicians or physicians on call. The aims of this study were to examine differences in the quality of DCs due to type of physician and to uncover possible implications of errors for the public statistics. METHODS: DCs from the year 2013 from nursing homes in the catchment area of Akershus University Hospital were examined with regard to logical deficiencies, garbage code diagnoses and type of certifying physician. In one third of cases, the registered causes of
