Adiponectin and gastric fundus: A potential target for gut-brain axis dysfunctions.

Adiponectin (ADPN) is a pleiotropic hormone produced by adipose tissue involved in the control of body weight, energy expenditure, and feeding behaviors. Alongside a central effect, ADPN acts on peripheral organs such as the stomach, where it can favor gastric fundus relaxation, reinforcing central satiety signals. Notably, ADPN serum levels are dysregulated in several conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, altered hormone levels coexist with disorders related to the gut-brain axis malfunctioning, that is, eating disorders and inflammatory bowel diseases. Aiming at consider

A rare case of oesophageal and gastric fundus necrosis following traumatic splenectomy.

Oesophageal and gastric fundus necrosis are rare clinical entities and have not previously been reported concurrently. This case study describes oesophageal and gastric fundus necrosis in a 71-year-old female who developed chest pain post-splenectomy for infected splenic haematoma in the context of a fall. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy demonstrated oesophageal and gastric fundus necrosis. This was likely due to multiple factors including comorbidities, hypoperfusion, post-splenectomy state and herpes simplex virus oesophagitis. This finding is an important differential in the unwell patient

Characterization of the A-type potassium current in murine gastric fundus smooth muscles.

Transient outward, or "A-type," currents are rapidly inactivating voltage-gated potassium currents that operate at negative membrane potentials. A-type currents have not been reported in the gastric fundus, a tonic smooth muscle. We used whole cell voltage clamp to identify and characterize A-type currents in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) isolated from murine fundus. A-type currents were robust in these cells with peak amplitudes averaging 1.5 nA at 0 mV. Inactivation was rapid with a time constant of 71 ms at 0 mV; recovery from inactivation at -80 mV was similarly rapid with a time constant of

[Eccentric esophagogastrostomy for cancers of gastric cardia and fundus--a report of 122 cases].

Eccentric esophagogastrostomy was performed in 122 patients with cancers of gastric cardia and fundus from 1989 to 1991. Three patients (2.4%) had anastomotic stricture. There were no postoperative anastomotic leakage, gastroesophageal reflux and postoperative death. Since the procedure is performed on an opened stomach under direct vision, the operator can adjust the length of anastomosis. Postoperative X-ray imaging showed that the anastomotic form resembles the anatomical features of gastric cardia and fundus with a larger diameter than that made by routine operation. Therefore, the eccentr

Gastrin-Releasing Peptide Facilitates Cholinergically Mediated Contractions of the Mouse Gastric Fundus.

Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and neuromedin B (NMB) are found in the stomach's myenteric plexus and muscular layers. When exogenously administered, they contract stomach muscle in several species, but their ability to modulate enteric nerve functions has rarely been studied. We investigated the effects of GRP on cholinergic-mediated contractions of the stomach, after first characterizing the contractile effects of GRP, NMB, and bombesin (BB). Circular muscle rings, cut from the mouse gastric fundus, were studied using tissue bath techniques. Contractions evoked by electrical field stimulati

Gastric Fundus Obstruction From Hiatal Hernia After Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Case Report.

Sleeve gastrectomy is currently the most common bariatric procedure in the United States, with over 750,000 cases performed between 2018 and 2022. While early complications such as hemorrhage and leaks are well documented, increasing data reveal a broader range of long-term complications, including stricture, gastroesophageal reflux, and hernias. We present a rare case of gastric sleeve herniation through a hiatal hernia (HH), resulting in gastric obstruction, a phenomenon not previously documented in the literature. A 78-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain, emesis, and anorexia. Imag

A minimally invasive solution for necrotic fundus following slipped adjustable gastric band.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) is widely used for treatment of morbid obesity. Band slippage is a well known long-term complication. Herein, we present a patient with band slippage who developed strangulation of the fundus with irreversible necrosis. The chosen surgical solution was minimally invasive. A diagnostic laparoscopy and consequently resection of the necrotic fundus was performed. A postoperative symptomatic left pleural effusion resolved after chest tube insertion. One week later, the patient was discharged with satisfactory results.

[Influence of Helicobacter pylori on gastric secretion. Study on variously associated gastric body, fundus and antrum chronic gastritis].

Among the various themes related to Helicobacter pylori (HP) which is still a subject of discussion, there is the possible influence of this bacterium on gastric secretory physiology. In the present study, an evaluation has been carried out of stimulated gastrinemia, stimulated acid secretion and total peptic activity in gastric juice in the course of a paradigmatic condition, as autonomous chronic gastritis, in order to reveal possible modifications induced by the HP infection. In cases of HP positive chronic superficial antral gastritis associated either with normal body-fundic mucosa or wit

Primary gastric fundus tuberculosis in immunocompetent patient: a case report and literature review.

We report on a 29-year-old Pakistani man who presented to the clinic with epigastric pain, of one-month duration. He did not report fever, cough, vomiting blood, passing black stools, loss of appetite or diarrhea. However, he had lost 7 kg since his symptoms had begun. Clinical examination was unremarkable. Laboratory results were within normal limits. An abdominal CT scan showed a mass with enhancement in the stomach. Gastric endoscopy revealed an ulcerative mass in the fundus. An endoscopic-biopsy specimen revealed caseating granulomas with acid-fast bacilli. The patient was diagnosed to hav

Neuronal correlates of gastric pain induced by fundus distension: a 3T-fMRI study.

Visceral hypersensitivity in gastric fundus is a possible pathogenesis for functional dyspepsia. The cortical representation of gastric fundus is still unclear. Growing evidence shows that the insula, but not the primary or secondary somatosensory region (SI or SII), may be the cortical target for visceral pain. Animal studies have also demonstrated that amygdala plays an important role in processing visceral pain. We used fMRI to study central projection of stomach pain from fundus balloon distension. We also tested the hypothesis that there will be neither S1 nor S2 activation, but amygdala

The effect of levosulpiride on in vitro motor patterns in the human gastric fundus, antrum, and jejunum.

BACKGROUND: Levosulpiride is a 5HT4 agonist/D2 antagonist prokinetic agent used to improve gastric emptying in patients with functional dyspepsia or gastroparesis. The aim of this study was to characterize its effect on the main in vitro motility patterns in the human fundus, antrum, and jejunum. METHODS: Circular muscle strips from human stomach (antrum and fundus) and jejunum, obtained from 46 patients undergoing bariatric surgery, were studied using organ baths. Enteric motor neurons (EMNs) were stimulated by electrical field stimulation (EFS). KEY RESULTS: Levosulpiride, caused an increa

A "push-and-pull" trick for endoscopic removal of buckyballs impacted in the esophagus and gastric fundus.

As a common foreign body in children, magnet ingestion has been a widespread health issue. Unlike single magnet, ingestion of multiple magnets, especially those high-powered like Buckyballs could cause significant GI injury, e.g., perforation and fistula. Hereby we present a "push-and-pull" trick for management of a rare circumstance of Buckyballs ingestion.

Clinicopathologic profiles and prognosis of gastric carcinomas from the cardia, fundus/body and antrum.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The putative influence of tumor location on the biologic behavior of gastric carcinomas remains controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate if carcinomas arising in the three types of gastric mucosa (cardia, fundus/body and antrum) have different clinical and pathologic profiles and carry a different prognosis. METHODS: Three hundred and two patients with cardia or gastric carcinoma resected between 1984 and 1996 were retrospectively studied. Cases were divided in three groups according to tumor location: cardia (n = 80); fundus/body (n = 60); antrum (n = 162). Th

Study of NO and VIP as non-adrenergic non-cholinergic neurotransmitters in the pig gastric fundus.

1. The contribution of nitric oxide (NO) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) to non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) relaxations in the pig gastric fundus was investigated. 2. Circular and longitudinal muscle strips were mounted for isotonic registration in the presence of atropine and guanethidine; tone was raised with 5-hydroxytryptamine. Electrical field stimulation with 10 s trains at 5 min intervals induced responses were abolished by tetrodotoxin. 3. The short-lasting as well as the sustained electrically induced NANC relaxations were significantly reduced by NG-nitro-L-arginine
