Portal Hypertension (PH) was diagnosed in 114/4145 patients (p) evaluated by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy during 1991-92 (2.75%). Portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) was found in 39.47% p. Mild PHG was observed in 82.22% and esophageal varices grade was directly correlated to PHG presence. This is a new entity to be considered because of its bleeding possibility in PH patients.

A new spiral bacterium, distinct from Campylobacter pylori, was found in the gastric mucosa of six patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. All patients had chronic active type B gastritis and four had oesophagitis. Culture and microscopy for C pylori infection was negative. The authors report the results of systematic research on Campylobacter pylori during high endoscopy. Of the 60 patients examined, 12 were found to have the germ in their antral, gastric mucosa. All these patients had a history of chronic gastritis. They recall the role of this germ in creating chronic gastritis, and evoke the hypothesis that the mucosa becomes fragile facilitating the appearance of an ulcer.

We report the case of a 75-yr-old woman referred for gastrointestinal endoscopy to investigate severe iron deficiency anemia. Black linear lesions were observed in the distal esophagus and stomach. Biopsies revealed aggregates of coarse black foreign material, which was later identified as charcoal.
