Carcinoids of the gastrointestinal tract.

Thirteen cases of carcinoid of the GI tract during eleven years seen in our hospital are presented. Prior to surgery, the clinical diagnosis of our 9 cases of gastric carcinoid was as follows: 7 cases were diagnosed as advanced gastric cancer, one case as perforated gastric ulcer, while a minute lesion of less than 1 cm in diameter was correctly diagnosed as a carcinoid. The tumors were all larger than 2 cm in the largest diameter with the exception of a minute lesion that appeared as a submucosal tumor and was diagnosed correctly before operation. Only one case of rectal carcinoid was diagnos

Ascariasis of the gastrointestinal tract.

The radiographic findings and complications of Ascaris lumbricoides infection of the gastrointestinal tract are presented. Since the clinical symptoms of ascariasis are usually vague or nonspecific, the radiologist may be in a position to play a major role in the proper diagnosis of this disease.

Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract.

The alimentary tract is sterile at birth but colonic colonization is relatively complete by the end of the first week of life. The upper alimentary tract is colonized by microorganisms normally inhabiting the oral cavity. The colon on the other hand appears to be colonized by microorganisms originating in the maternallower alimentary tract. The colonic flora of infants is affected by diet (breast or formula feedings). The presence of a "fecal-type" flora in the proximal small bowel should be considered abnormal. Most authors agree on the need to define the role of the microflora in health and

Lymphomas of the gastrointestinal tract.

Lymphomas occurring primarily in the alimentary tract present in the same way as carcinomas. Because they have a much better prognosis than carcinoma, especially in the case of gastrict lymphomas, it is important that they be diagnosed. For this reason, laparotomy if necessary should be undertaken in order to establish a histologic diagnosis of all alimentary neoplasms. With modern equipment, however, it is often possible to obtain enough tissue for diagnosis by endoscopic means. The ideal treatment is surgery, but if there is doubt about the completeness of excision or if there are involved l

Laser tissue soldering of the gastrointestinal tract: A systematic review LTS of the gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND: Laser Tissue Soldering (LTS) is a promising tissue bonding technique in which a solder is applied between the tissues and then irradiated by laser, causing it to solidify and form links with the tissue. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic review summarizing the state of research of LTS in the gastrointestinal tract. RESULTS: Most studies were conducted on large animal tissues, using liquid proteinaceous solder, and irradiated by a continuous wave laser at 808 nm. LTS can provide better sealing and burst pressure than conventional methods. The application of LTS on top of or in ad

Upper Gastrointestinal Tract Foreign Bodies.

Foreign body ingestion, a common emergency encountered in clinical practice, is a potentially serious condition. Most foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract pass spontaneously. However, objects that are relatively long or large may lodge in the upper gastrointestinal tract, potentially causing perforation, bleeding, and obstruction. This literature review summarizes the natural history and clinical aspects of these types of foreign bodies in adults as well as the various methods for their removal. Endoscopic removal is a relatively safe and effective procedure for removing these types of

Physiology of lower gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND: The lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, formed from the midgut and hindgut, encompasses the colon, rectum and anal canal. AIM: The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the lower GI tract. METHODS: Literature review on anatomy and physiology of the lower GI tract, including normal motility and phases of defecation. It derives its blood supply from the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries while it is innervated by the extrinsic autonomic (the thoracolumbar and sacral nerves) and the intrinsic enteric nervous system. The colon has four la

Imaging of Gastrointestinal Tract Perforation.

Gastrointestinal tract perforation involving the stomach, duodenum, small intestine, or large bowel occurs as a result of full-thickness gastrointestinal wall injury with release of intraluminal contents into the peritoneal or retroperitoneal cavity. Most cases are associated with high mortality and morbidity, requiring urgent surgical evaluation. Initial patient presentations can be nonspecific with a broad differential, which can delay timely management. This article provides brief overviews of different causes of perforation. Various imaging modalities and protocols are discussed, along wit

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the involvement of the human gut in carriage and disease associated with Burkholderia pseudomallei, the cause of melioidosis. METHODS: A hospital-based study was conducted in Northeast Thailand to culture stools or rectal swabs from patients with melioidosis, stools from controls with non-infectious diseases, and gastric biopsies from patients undergoing routine endoscopic investigation. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: B. pseudomallei was isolated from 9/83 (11%) stools and 9/58 (16%) rectal swabs from 141 patients with melioidosis. All stools from 244 control patie

Lower gastrointestinal tract. 1. Constipation.

An accurate diagnosis is of primary importance in lower gastrointestinal problems in the elderly. Reversible causes should be treated specifically whenever possible, but symptomatic treatment can be a useful adjunct or a mainstay if no cause can be found. For constipation symptomatic treatment should proceed stepwise, commencing with increase in dietary fibre content. Only if this approach fails should laxatives (osmotic) be used. Stimulant laxatives and paraffin are best used intermittently, if at all, because of their side effects.

Imaging of Gastrointestinal Tract Ailments.

Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders comprise a diverse range of conditions that can significantly reduce the quality of life and can even be life-threatening in serious cases. The development of accurate and rapid detection approaches is of essential importance for early diagnosis and timely management of GI diseases. This review mainly focuses on the imaging of several representative gastrointestinal ailments, such as inflammatory bowel disease, tumors, appendicitis, Meckel's diverticulum, and others. Various imaging modalities commonly used for the gastrointestinal tract, including magnetic reso

Gastrointestinal tract and viral pathogens.

Viral gastroenteritis is the most common viral illness that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, causing inflammation and irritation of the lining of the stomach and intestines. Common signs and symptoms associated with this condition include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dehydration. The infections commonly involved in viral gastroenteritis are rotavirus, norovirus, and adenovirus, which spread through the fecal-oral and contact routes and cause non-bloody diarrhea. These infections can affect both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Since the pandemic in 2019, coronavirus

Paediatric radiology 1: gastrointestinal tract.

Clinical symptoms in the infant differ from those in the adult in that they are most likely to have a congenital or developmental cause. These symptoms are discussed together with the history and imaging techniques most likely to reveal their cause in the gastrointestinal tract. (The genitourinary and respiratory tracts will be dealt with separately in future articles in this series.)
