PURPOSE: To determine the outcome of gastrostomy tube-to-gastrojejunostomy tube conversion on the basis of the method of original gastrostomy tube placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty-four patients (age range, 13-87 years; 72 male and 52 female patients) underwent conversion of a primarily placed gastrostomy tube to a gastrojejunostomy tube at the authors' institution between January 2000 and December 2008. The method of original gastrostomy tube placement was radiologic (n = 27), endoscopic (n = 75), laparoscopic (n = 2), or open surgery (n = 20). The method of placement was

Since their aparition in 1980, percutaneus endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), represented a dramatic impact in the enteral nutrition thecnics and their indication have expanded. The PEG have many advantages over the surgical gastrostomy. In this paper, we present our experience with the use of PEG in patients with head and neck cancer using a new home made gastrostome. Included were 61 patients 37 males (64.8%), 21 females (36.2%) with ages betwen 11 and 72 years. In 3 patients the PEG was not intended because tight esophageal stenoses. The PEG was completed in 56 cases (91.8%). In 5 patients (8.6%

BACKGROUND: Gastrostomy tube (GT) placement is essential for patients requiring long-term enteral access, but the relative safety of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), radiologic placement (IR), and surgical gastrostomy across global populations remains uncertain. Previous large-scale studies, such as Kohli and colleagues, demonstrated favorable outcomes for PEG in US cohorts; however, their external validity to international health care systems is unclear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Research Network, including 146 health

Several techniques are available for a gastrostomy concomitant with a major abdominal surgery, i.e., there is no 'standard' technique. Here, we present our results of a novel concomitant gastrostomy developed for the Nissen fundoplication. It combines the laparoscopic instrumentation with the kit for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Once the fundoplication is completed, the gastrostomy is performed in three stages. First, with the orogastric tube and snare, the loop of wire is left in the peritoneal cavity; next, a guide-wire introduced into the peritoneal cavity from the abdominal wall, i

PURPOSE: Insertion of gastrostomy has become a popular choice for children with feeding problems. With the passage of time, gastrostomies require revision for various reasons. The aims of the present study are to report our experience of the revision of long-term gastrostomies, to ascertain the reasons for revision, and to discuss any measures that may prevent the need for revision.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all of the patients requiring gastrostomy revision by the senior author between 2005 and June 2011. The patients had had their original operation in several differen

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement is associated with considerable complications. We added laparoscopic monitoring to improve outcome.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients who had laparoscopy-assisted PEG (LAP-PEG) were reviewed. A 5 mm supraumbilical trocar and two 5 mm working ports were required for LAP-PEG. A needle was placed percutaneously into the stomach under laparoscopic and gastroscopic control. A wire was placed through the needle, encircled with a snare, and the PEG completed. The anterior wall of the stomach was then anchored to the abdominal wall.
RESULTS:

Novel approaches to percutaneous gastrostomy have evolved because of catheter clogging and displacement, which is commonly seen with currently available gastrostomy catheters. Low-profile button gastrostomy catheters, designed to be inserted into mature tracts, have recently been inserted into fresh gastrostomy tracts. Catheter clogging rarely occurs with these low-profile devices. Catheter displacement remains a problem but new buttons can be inserted at the patient's bedside without the need for a return visit to the radiology department. A 90 to 100% success rate has been shown for placemen

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although quite reliable, gastrostomy may require revision. However, there are no reports in the literature specifically delineating identifiable risk factors or circumstances that lead to gastrostomy revision in children with gastrostomy. The purpose of this report was to determine the rate of revision and correlate any factors that may lead to revision.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 1,042 children who underwent gastrostomy at The Children's Hospital, Denver, Colorado, between 1992 and 2002. Charts of children who underwent gastrostomy were reviewe

INTRODUCTION: Since 1980, when percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy was described and performed for the first time, the number of patients with this way of nutrition has been growing. At present, however, these patients are treated not only in intensive care units, but also in follow-up care institutions or in home care.
AIM: We want to explain the problems of nutrition via endoscopic gastrostomy to those physicians who take long-term care of these patients.
METHODS: In our department we introduced percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in 1994. A total of 78 PEGs were performed. In all cases th

Puncture gastrostomies--percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and radiologically assisted gastrostomy--are minimally invasive methods to ensure an approach for the administration of enteral nutrition. These methods replaced the insertion of tubes during surgery (surgical gastrostomy). Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is inserted by means of a gastroscope, usually by the pull method, radiologically assisted gastrostomy (RAG) is implemented after insufflation of the stomach by a thin tube directly across the abdominal wall by the push method. In oncological patients it is preferable to ad

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this report is to describe a method for laparoscopy aided button gastrostomy in children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The method includes the use of two ports, one umbilical and one subcostal on the left side. The stomach is exteriorized using a grasping forceps in the subcostal port. Under direct vision the gastrostomy button, MIC-KEY, is inserted into the stomach at the lesser curvature and secured by purse string sutures. The stomach is attached to the anterior abdominal wall.
RESULTS: The results show that this method has been successfully used in 33 children wi

Today the procedure of choice for long-term enteral tube feeding in patients with prolonged swallowing difficulties or inabilities is percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). The primary indications are head and neck cancers, neurologic dysphagia, cancer cachexia, and obstruction of the esophagus and pharynx with enough space for an endoscopic procedure. This technique requires no general anesthesia and is possible in patients with contraindications to surgical gastrostomy. Between September 1994 and April 1995 a total of 115 patients underwent PEG placement attempts. We employed the pull-te

A procedure for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is described. Under direct endoscopic control, the surgeon introduces, percutaneously, into the inflated stomach a 9 French Foley catheter through a special needle, which may then be opened for removal. After positioning, the terminal balloon of the Foley is inflated with 7-8 ml of air and the catheter is placed under slight traction to appose the gastric and abdominal walls. Such a method has been used in 5 patients with cancer of the cardia requiring enteral feeding prior to surgery. No complications due to the positioning of the gastrostom

BACKGROUND: When commencing enteral feeding, patients and families will want to know the likelihood of returning to an oral diet. There is a paucity of data on the prognosis of patients with gastrostomies. We describe a large dataset of patients, which identifies factors influencing gastrostomy removal and assesses the likelihood of the patient having at home enteral nutrition.
METHODS: Retrospective data was collected on patients from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals who had received a gastrostomy and had outpatient enteral feeding between January 2016 and December 2019. Demographic data, indica

Gastrostomy tubes are often placed in patients with poor voluntary intake, oropharyngeal dysphagia, or chronic illness to provide definitive nutritional access. Despite the widespread use of gastrostomy tubes, some patients can experience complications associated with this procedure including gastrocolic-cutaneous fistula and dislodgement of gastrostomy tube. This case discusses an instance of gastrojejunal fistula formation over one year after gastrostomy tube placement likely due to tube dislodgement. Imaging showed gastrostomy tube traversing the posterior wall of the stomach and creating a

Peroral, enteral feeding is often impossible in patients with head and neck cancer. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is a well-established, quick, minimally invasive, and safe procedure for providing long-term enteral feeding. Space-occupying tumour mass and altered anatomy due to surgery inhibit the gastroscope’s peroral introduction and the feeding tube’s placement in some instances. Various access routes and modified insertion techniques are recommended to overcome the feeding tube insertion challenges. We present a rare case of a 64-year-old head and neck cancer patient who was unable t

Percutaneous gastrostomy is well established root for long term feeding of patients who cannot be fed orally. The risks of percutanous gastrostomy insertion are low. Tube related complications often resolved by placing a Foley catheter or other balloon gastrostomy tube as a temporary solution. Gastrostomy tube related gastric, duodenal and billiary obstruction were reported. Gastrostomy tube related pancreatitis is scarcely described. We described a patient who suffered a pancreatitis related to Foley catheter gastrostomy dislodgment. Reviewing all reported cases of gastrostomy related pancrea

The article refers to the nursing treatment required when using a gastrostomy to administer enteral nutrition, mainly for children. Emphasis is placed on the attention to parents, since they are the ones who will apply this treatment. The author analyses the cures for a stoma, external support mechanisms and possible complications that may arise along with solutions for them.

This study evaluates our complications arising directly or indirectly from placement or management of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes and provides recommendations for avoidance of complications. Seventy-one patients received PEG tube placement by otolaryngologists between January 1991 and May 1997. Records were reviewed for diagnoses, combined procedures, and complications. Addressing potential causes of complications prompted modification of our technique of PEG tube placement and management. Twenty-three patients received PEG for dysphagia/aspiration unrelated to neoplasia, 1

Surgical centers that treat esophageal cancer need to create a simple and easy method to feed patients who suffer from complete occlusion of the upper alimentary tract. The purpose of this work is to present our own modification of a laparoscopic feeding gastrostomy, which is based on our own experience and previously published methods. Our system requires only two trocars and can be done under general or local anesthesia. It consists of exteriorizing a stomach fragment through a 12-mm opening in the skin under video control. The newly created gastrostomy forms a channel in the abdominal wall
