Acute myocardial infarction from septic embolization is a rare initial presentation of endocarditis. We report the case of a 67-year-old man who presented with acute chest pain, in whom emergency cardiac catheterization revealed findings that suggested coronary embolism. The patient was found to have Gemella endocarditis, with its initial presentation an embolic acute ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. We suggest that endocarditis be considered among the potential causes of acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare form of thyroid inflammation prevalently of bacterial origin that usually affects subjects with risk factors such as immunodeficiency, sepsis, and neck fistulas. The most prevalent pathogens associated with AST are gram-- positive aerobic bacteria, followed by gram-negatives, while infections by anaerobic germs are exceptionally rare. Gemella morbillorum is a facultative anaerobic gram- positive bacterium that commonly populates the upper respiratory tract. Infections by Gemella Morbillorum have been previously documented in different r

We present a case of infective endocarditis (IE) of the aortic valve, mitral valve, and aortomitral curtain caused by Gemella sanguinis. The patient was an otherwise healthy 53-year-old male without significant risk factors for infective endocarditis in his medical history. Due to the extent of the infective endocarditis and the rapid deterioration of his clinical condition, which included respiratory failure and severe heart failure, the patient was treated with urgent surgery (a Commando operation where both the aortic and mitral valves were replaced and the aortomitral curtain was reconstru

Gemella morbillorum is a rare cause of infective endocarditis. Consequently, little is known about the natural course of endocarditis secondary to this pathogen. Herein, we report a case of cardiogenic shock as a complication of acute mitral valve regurgitation following Gemella morbillorum native valve endocarditis.

Gemella morbillorum is a gram positive cocci, considered normal flora of the upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary tract in humans. As a pathogen, there are reported cases of infectious endocarditis, bacteremia, sepsis, and abscesses, primarily associated with dental instrumentation, prosthetic heart valves, colon cancer, and endovascular access. We report a case of an 87-year-old Caucasian male with a history of a ruptured chordae of the anterior mitral leaflet, severe mitral regurgitation (MR), and atrial fibrillation who developed multisystem organ failure due t

A case of cryptogenic brain abscess caused by Gemella morbillorum is reported in a 28-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with seizures and hemiparesis. The patient underwent successful stereotactic drainage of the abscess with complete resolution of symptoms and radiographic evidence of resolution. We report the significant pathogenic potential of a normal commensal rarely identified in neurologic infections.

Here, we present a case of infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Gemella sanguinis, a pathogen that rarely causes human infection. The patient in this case was an otherwise healthy 50-year-old man who presented with gradually worsening shortness of breath, weight loss, fatigue, chills, and leg swelling for six weeks. He had no prior history of cardiac disease and had never used intravenous drugs, but he had undergone extensive dental work following a military-associated injury. A workup for IE was done, and echocardiography revealed a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) with vegetations causing modera

Gemella morbillorum is a facultative anaerobic, catalase-negative and non-spore forming Gram-positive cocci. It can be found as part of the normal oropharyngeal flora, in the gastrointestinal tract and the female genital tract. However, it can be a causal agent of infections such as endocarditis, meningitis or brain abscesses, and very rarely can cause osteoarticular infections. Herein, a case report of an acute hematogenous prosthetic hip infection caused by Gemella morbillorum, successfully treated with a DAIR and beta-lactam antibiotic therapy, is presented. We provide a literature review o

A 56-year-old female with a history of poor dental hygiene and aortic insufficiency status post aortic valve replacement in 2015 presented with chest pain and fevers. She was found to have portal vein thrombosis, colitis, and infective endocarditis with aortic valve thickening. Blood cultures were positive for Actinomyces odontolyticus and Gemella morbillorum. Transesophageal echocardiogram was positive for aortic root thickening. Patient was treated with ceftriaxone and apixaban with full recovery.

A 24-year-old otherwise healthy man presented with a 3-week history of malaise, headache, fever and rigors after he was treated with oral clindamycin for left parotitis and Gemella haemolysans bacteraemia. He developed G. haemolysans infective endocarditis, septic emboli and heart failure due to progressive bivalvular disease. He underwent urgent mechanical aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair, which required venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, to support severe respiratory failure. This is the first documented case of G. haemolysans infective endocarditis affecting nat

We report a case of meningitis due to Gemella haemolysans. An 82-year-old man with trigeminal neuralgia and senile dementia developed signs of meningitis 24 h after retrogasserian glycerol injection. Cerebrospinal fluid cultures grew G. haemolysans. Initial treatment with ampicillin and cefotaxime followed by benzylpenicillin was successful.

Gemella morbillorum is part of the commensal flora of the upper respiratory tract, intestinal tract and genitourinary tract. On rare occasions, it causes endocarditis. We report a 67-year-old Chinese man with end-stage renal disease on maintenance intermittent haemodialysis, who developed Gemella morbillorum endocarditis complicated by severe aortic and mitral regurgitation. Most cases of Gemella morbillorum endocarditis have satisfactory outcomes with antibiotics or surgical treatment.

We present a rare case of Gemella haemolysans automated implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) lead infection. Gemella species are catalase-negative, facultative anaerobic, Gram-positive cocci which are found in normal human oral flora. Gemella are often incorrectly identified on routine Gram stain and culture, requiring advanced techniques such as PCR. Gemella has been shown to be a rare cause infective endocarditis in case reports; however, there has not been a report of an isolated AICD lead infection. AICD infections with gram positive organisms other than Staphylococcus species has

Gemella haemolysans, a Gram positive cocci which are deemed to be the normal inhabitant of the mucous membranes of the oropharynx, has been recognized as a pathogen involved in abscess formation. The aim of this case report is to demonstrate that it is also involved in brain abscess in children. We report, to our knowledge, the first pediatric case of Gemella haemolysans brain abscess in an 11 years old child carrying a complex congenital heart disease (dextrocardia with single right ventricle) which evolved favorably under antibiotic therapy. Because of its similarity with Streptococcus virid

Gemella morbillorum is a gram-positive coccus that is part of the normal microbiota of the human oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. It is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause invasive infections, including septic arthritis. Septic arthritis caused by Gemella morbillorum is relatively rare, but when it occurs, it can lead to severe joint damage and other complications if not promptly diagnosed and treated. Here, we report a case of recurrent septic arthritis caused by Gemella morbillorum.

Late prosthetic valve endocarditis is usually caused by streptococci, staphylococci, gram-negative bacilli and candida. The authors report the first case of prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Gemella sanguinis. The patient's risk factors for the development of Gemella endocarditis were the persistent severe dental caries and the presence of prosthetic valves. The patient required surgical replacement of the infected valve but had a good outcome with preservation of cardiac and valvular function. Evaluation and treatment of the persistent dental infection before initial valvular surgery ma

Bacteria are increasingly recognized as contributors to cancer, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear for most species. Here, we find that Gemella morbillorum (Gm) is enriched in feces and tumor tissues from patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and reveal a multi-step host-pathogen mechanism that promotes colorectal tumorigenesis. In mouse models of CRC, Gm suppresses IL-22 production by type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s), impairing intestinal barrier function and facilitating bacterial translocation to early neoplastic lesions. At the tumor site, Gm utilizes an ANXA2-dependent, clat

Sinus lift is a predictable procedure for increasing alveolar bone height in the posterosuperior alveolar regions to allow oral prosthetic rehabilitation. Several complications have been documented in the literature and vary from sinus membrane perforation to maxillary rhinosinusitis. The authors present a case of Gemella morbillorum acute sinusitis after sinus lift surgery. The purpose of this report is to describe the surgical and pharmacological management of a patient allergic to penicillin.
