Training the Next Generation of Clinical Psychological Scientists: A Data-Driven Call to Action.

The central goal of clinical psychology is to reduce the suffering caused by mental health conditions. Anxiety, mood, psychosis, substance use, personality, and other mental disorders impose an immense burden on global public health and the economy. Tackling this burden will require the development and dissemination of intervention strategies that are more effective, sustainable, and equitable. Clinical psychology is uniquely poised to serve as a transdisciplinary hub for this work. But rising to this challengerequires an honest reckoning with the strengths and weaknesses of current training p

General practitioners' attitudes towards acne management: Psychological morbidity and the need for collaboration.

METHOD: A qualitative descriptive study collected data via telephone interviews with 20 purposively sampled GPs working in New South Wales. A thematic analysis guided by the study objectives was undertaken. RESULTS: The participating GPs had divergent management approaches to acne treatment, infrequently provided acne patients with written resources, and would value additional dermatological support. Furthermore, the GPs recognised psychosocial ramifications and patient distress as drivers for treatment and expedited referral to dermatologists. DISCUSSION: Avenues for improved patient outcom

Posttraumatic Psychological Symptoms are Associated with Reduced Inhibitory Control, not General Executive Dysfunction.

Although there is mounting evidence that greater PTSD symptoms are associated with reduced executive functioning, it is not fully understood whether this association is more global or specific to certain executive function subdomains, such as inhibitory control. We investigated the generality of the association between PTSD symptoms and executive function by administering a broad battery of sensitive executive functioning tasks to a cohort of returning Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom Veterans with varying PTSD symptoms. Only tasks related to inhibitory control explained sign

Psychological aspects of orthodontics in clinical practice. Part two: general psychosocial wellbeing.

Orthodontists tend to treat/see their patients on a systematic, recurrent basis, often during crucial stages of psychological development. Therefore, they have a pivotal role in identifying a number of psychological as well as of psychiatric disorders. Effective communication is crucial and unfortunately, it is often underestimated in a busy clinical practice. Aim of part two of this article it to review the role clinical orthodontics and the orthodontist-patient relationship have on the patients' psychosocial wellbeing, including effects on self-esteem, bullying and harassment by peers, and e

[Generalized compartment syndrome after excessive drinking. A rare complication of psychological disorders?].

Psychogenic polydipsia can lead to compartment syndromes, which is too infrequently considered in psychiatric patients who binge-drink on hypotonic fluids. If masked by the leading clinical presentation of cerebral edema, compartment syndromes of the extremities may be diagnosed too late or remain undetected. Based on a literature review and case report, we discuss additional factors and the specific features of diagnosis and treatment.

Prediction of persistent post-operative pain: Pain-specific psychological variables compared with acute post-operative pain and general psychological variables.

BACKGROUND: Psychological variables and acute post-operative pain are of proven relevance for the prediction of persistent post-operative pain. We aimed at investigating whether pain-specific psychological variables like pain catastrophizing add to the predictive power of acute pain and more general psychological variables like depression. METHODS: In all, 104 young male patients undergoing thoracic surgery for pectus excavatum correction were studied on the pre-operative day (T0) and 1 week (T1) and 3 months (T2) after surgery. They provided self-report ratings (pain-related: Pain Catastroph

Comparison of Commonly Applied Outcome Inventories as Measures of General Internalizing Pathology in Psychological Therapies.

Measuring general factors to capture severity of psychopathology broadly can be useful for assessing treatment outcomes of psychological therapies. Namely, general factors are suitable for broadband measurement, which has become increasingly important due to efforts to standardize outcome measurement. Reasons for measuring general factors include their predictive validity, relatability to parallel research in epidemiology, genetics and neurobiology, simplicity due to unidimensionality, longitudinal structural validity and potential for capturing transdiagnostic change. The new identitarians: How the behavioral movement and psychology in general have been ideologically captured.

Recent developments within the mental health professions suggest a growing ideological capture by left-wing identitarian frameworks, with significant implications for clinical ethics, scientific integrity, and public health. This article argues that the increasing fusion of psychotherapy with political activism, particularly through the spread of decolonial therapy and related approaches, has contributed to discriminatory practices. This has led to identity-based discrimination toward Jewish clinicians and clients, specifically those who identify as Zionist. We argue that these frameworks impo

Disordered eating behaviours, self-compassion, and psychological distress in Canadian general surgery residents.

BACKGROUND: Surgical residents experience higher levels of negative stress and helplessness compared to the general population. Studies have linked stress to negative eating habits. Despite the high stress and burnout among surgical residents, studies on their disordered eating behaviors remain limited. Understanding the factors contributing to these findings will help optimize mental health during residency training. METHODS: This study is a mixed-methods cross-sectional survey of all general surgery residents in Canada. The survey assessed disordered eating, quality of life, and self-compas

The role of psychological factors in patients' choices to see their general practitioner or pharmacist for minor conditions.

OBJECTIVE: UK-based patients can consult with, and be treated by, pharmacists for various minor medical conditions. However, research needs to identify the psychological factors that influence patients' decisions to consult with a pharmacist over alternative treatment responses. The current study addressed this gap. METHODS AND MEASURES: UK residents (N = 329) completed measures of respect and trust for general practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists, alongside other measures that could influence treatment choices. Participants then read vignettes describing symptoms of conjunctivitis, influenza,

Neurological and (neuro)psychological sequelae in intensive care and general ward COVID-19 survivors.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects the brain, leading to long-term complaints. Studies combining brain abnormalities with objective and subjective consequences are lacking. Long-term structural brain abnormalities, neurological and (neuro)psychological consequences in COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) or general ward were investigated. The aim was to create a multidisciplinary view on the impact of severe COVID-19 on functioning and to compare long-term consequences between ICU and general ward patients. METHODS: This multicentre pros
