Using the nociception level index to compare the intraoperative antinociceptive effect of propofol and sevoflurane during clinical and experimental noxious stimulus in patients under general anesthesia.

STUDY: Propofol and sevoflurane are two anesthetic agents widely used to induce and maintain general anesthesia (GA). Their intrinsic antinociceptive properties remain unclear and are still debated. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether propofol presents stronger antinociceptive properties than sevoflurane using intraoperative clinical and experimental noxious stimulations and evaluating postoperative pain outcomes. DESIGN: A prospective randomized monocentric trial. SETTING: Perioperative care. PATIENTS: 60 adult patients with ASA status I to III who underwent elective abdominal laparoscopic su

Discriminative stimulus effects of two doses of fentanyl in rats: pharmacological selectivity and effect of training dose on agonist and antagonist effects of mu opioids.

RATIONALE: Discriminative stimulus effects of mu opioids vary systematically as a function of training dose. Differences among training doses may arise from multiple mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: In vivo apparent pA(2) analyses were used to examine the contributions of opioid mechanisms to stimulus control by low and high training doses of the mu opioid fentanyl. METHODS: Saline and one of two doses of fentanyl, administered s.c., were established as discriminative stimuli in two groups of rats (low training dose group: 0.01 mg/kg; high training dose group: 0.04 mg/kg). Generalization tests and in

From digital stimulus to hiking participation: an SOR-based examination of the internal associations between social media hiking content and participation intention in Chinese generation Z consumers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between perceived social media hiking content and hiking participation intention among Chinese Generation Z consumers. It further tested whether this relationship was consistent with a serial mediation pattern involving travel inspiration and destination image, and whether social connectedness moderated these associations. Node-level network analysis was also used to identify key relational structures among construct items and dimensions. METHODS: An online questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,186 Chinese Generation Z consumers with prior

Cross-generalization between a cocaine cue and two antihistamines.

Rats were trained to discriminate between 10 mg/kg cocaine and saline injections under a fixed ratio 10 schedule of food-motivated lever press responding. Once stimulus control was achieved, reinforced test sessions were conducted to assess the degree of generalization of a wide range of cocaine doses and the cross-generalization between the cocaine training stimulus and two over-the-counter antihistaminic drugs, diphenhydramine and doxylamine, when administered with saline or in drug combinations. Cocaine produced a dose-dependent generalization to the 10 mg/kg training stimulus. Cocaine also

Fear generalization in individuals with subclinical symptoms of panic disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) is a debilitating mental health condition, characterized by a preoccupation with the occurrence of panic attacks. Previous research has found that PD patients display increased fear generalization, which entails inflated fear responses to ambiguous stimuli (e.g., intermediate size circles) following fear conditioning wherein a neutral stimulus (e.g., large circle) gets paired with an aversive stimulus (e.g., electric shocks), whereas another neutral stimulus (e.g., small circle) is not paired with this aversive stimulus. The overgeneralization of fear to ambiguous stimuli m

Generalization of object naming after training with picture cards and with objects.

Generalization of four retarded children's object naming responses to stimuli in the natural environment was assessed after training with either objects or pictures of the objects. Generalization was typically greater after training with objects. In a second experiment, half of the stimuli that showed little generalization were retrained by alternating the original training object with an object that belonged to the same stimulus class as the training stimulus. The other half were simply retrained using the object. The alternating procedure resulted in substantial increases in generalization t

Chlorphentermine may produce dual stimulus effects: a preliminary investigation.

1. Rats were trained to discriminate injections of either (+)-amphetamine (0.75 mg/kg) or (+/-)-fenfluramine (1.5 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination task. 2. After stable discrimination performances were attained in each group, stimulus generalization studies were conducted with amphetamine, fenfluramine, and chlorphentermine. 3. Stimulus generalization (substitution) did not occur between amphetamine and fenfluramine when either drug was used as the training stimulus. 4. In contrast, both the amphetamine stimulus and the fenfluramine stimulus generalized completely to chlor

Can experimentally induced positive affect attenuate generalization of fear of movement-related pain?

UNLABELLED: Recent experimental data show that associative learning processes are involved not only in the acquisition but also in the spreading of pain-related fear. Clinical studies suggest involvement of positive affect in resilience against chronic pain. Surprisingly, the role of positive affect in associative learning in general, and in fear generalization in particular, has received scant attention. In a voluntary movement paradigm, in which one arm movement (reinforced conditioned stimulus [CS+]) was followed by a painful stimulus and another was not (unreinforced conditioned stimulus [

The spread of fear: symbolic generalization mediates graded threat-avoidance in specific phobia.

Overgeneralization of fear and threat-avoidance represents a formidable barrier to successful clinical treatment of anxiety disorders. While stimulus generalization along quantifiable physical dimensions has been studied extensively, less consideration has been given to symbolic generalization, in which stimuli are indirectly and arbitrarily related. The present study examined whether the magnitude and extent of symbolic generalization of threat-avoidance and threat-beliefs differed between spider-phobic and nonphobic individuals. Initially, participants learned two sets of stimulus equivalenc

The association between nonverbal fluency and anomia treatment outcomes in people with post-stroke aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: Many people with aphasia experience concomitant executive functioning deficits, and the literature supports a role of executive functioning in treatment response. However, the optimal executive functioning assessment for measuring this impact is unclear, as is the extent to which outcomes (e.g., acquisition, generalization) may be impacted differently. The present retrospective study aimed to determine the degree to which nonverbal fluency, one measure of executive functioning with minimal language demand, was associated with naming treatment acquisition, stimulus generalization,

Discriminative stimulus properties of buspirone compared to central nervous system depressants in rats.

Two groups of rats were trained to discriminate either IP buspirone from vehicle or IP oxazepam from vehicle using a two-lever FR-10 schedule of sweetened milk presentation. The discrimination in the buspirone group was difficult to establish due to potent response rate decreasing effects. Oxazepam was a very effective stimulus and the discrimination in the oxazepam group was readily established. Tests with oxazepam and pentobarbital in the buspirone group provided no evidence for generalization of the stimulus properties of buspirone to either drug. Tests with buspirone in the oxazepam group

[Learned equivalence in schizophrenia: novel method for the measurement of memory functions of the hippocampus and basal ganglia].

The purpose of the present study was to investigate basal ganglia (BG) and medial temporal lobe (MTL) dependent learning in patients with schizophrenia. Acquired equivalence is a phenomenon in which prior training to treat two stimuli as equivalent (if two stimuli are associated with the same response) increases generalization between them. The learning of stimulus-response pairs is related to the BG, whereas the MTL system participates in stimulus generalization. Forty-three patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia and 28 matched healthy controls participated in the study. Volunteers received the a

Generalization of Extinguished Fear to Untreated Fear Stimuli after Exposure.

Exposure therapy is highly effective in treating excessive fear related to specific objects and/or situations. However, patients with anxiety disorders often display a generalization of fear responses toward conceptually and perceptually related stimuli and situations. It is unclear whether the beneficial effects of exposure on fear reduction toward treated fear stimuli can extend to untreated fear stimuli. Here, we investigated whether basic principles of extinction generalization apply to exposure. Spider-phobic participants were randomly assigned to either two sessions of exposure treatment

Right DLPFC stimulation attenuates negative evaluation in social anxiety: An rTMS study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by excessive fear generalization to social evaluation. Although rTMS shows promise in modulating anxiety, its effects on negative evaluation in social anxiety remain unclear. This study investigated if rTMS targeting the right DLPFC could modulate negative evaluation expectancy in individuals with high social anxiety. METHODS: Using a randomized controlled design, 33 individuals with high social anxiety (LSAS ≥38) were randomly assigned to rTMS (n = 15) or sham (n = 18) groups. Single-session 1 Hz rTMS (1200 pulses, 80% RMT) was applied to the right

Vagus nerve stimulation promotes extinction generalization across sensory modalities.

Traumatic experiences involve complex sensory information, and individuals with trauma-related psychological disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can exhibit abnormal fear to numerous different stimuli that remind them of the trauma. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) enhances extinction of auditory fear conditioning in rat models for PTSD. We recently found that VNS-paired extinction can also promote extinction generalization across different auditory cues. Here we tested whether VNS can enhance extinction of olfactory fear and promote extinction generalization across auditory

Fear learning and generalization during pandemic fear: How COVID-19-related anxiety affects classical fear conditioning with traumatic film clips.

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly disrupted our daily lives. Worldwide, people were confronted with health, financial, and existential fears or trauma-like experiences. Recent studies have identified an increase in stress, anxiety, and fear symptoms in connection with the pandemic. Furthermore, fear learning processes are central mechanisms in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. Patients commonly show impairments not only in fear learning but also in its generalization. Thus, pandemic-related anxiety may constitute a risk factor for both enhanced fear acquisition and generalizati

Generalization of a positive-feature interoceptive morphine occasion setter across the rat estrous cycle.

INTRODUCTION: Interoceptive stimuli elicited by drug administration acquire conditioned modulatory properties of the induction of conditioned appetitive behaviours by exteroceptive cues. This effect may be modeled using a drug discrimination task in which the drug stimulus is trained as a positive-feature (FP) occasion setter (OS) that disambiguates the relation between an exteroceptive light conditioned stimulus (CS) and a sucrose unconditioned stimulus (US). We previously reported that females are less sensitive to generalization of a FP morphine OS than males, so we investigated the role of

The overgeneralization of pain-related fear in individuals with higher pain sensitivity: A behavioral and event-related potential study.

Fear generalization contributes to the development and maintenance of pain. Pain sensitivity has been proposed to predict the strength of fear responses to aversive stimuli. However, whether individual variation in pain sensitivity affects pain-related fear generalization and its underlying cognitive processing remains unclear. To address this gap, we recorded behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) data among 22 high pain sensitivity (HPS) and 22 low pain sensitivity (LPS) healthy adults when exposed to a fear generalization paradigm. The behavioral results indicate that the HPS group di
