Screening for Anxiety Symptoms With the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 Versus Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 in Children With Headache or Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: To assess the accuracy of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2) Scale for screening anxiety symptoms in children with headache and epilepsy. METHODS: Single-center and large-scale assessment of the two-item GAD-2 as compared to the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) to screen for moderate-severe anxiety symptoms in children undergoing follow-up neurology appointments. RESULTS: The GAD-7 was fully completed for 3960 of 6060 (65%) encounters. Anxiety symptoms were moderate in 534 (13%) encounters and severe in 337 (9%) encounters. The GAD-2 and GAD-7 were very s

Psychometric Properties of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-Mini in United States University Students.

Background: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is common in young adults, yet few studies have established the psychometric properties of the GAD-7 screener in college students. Methods: A secondary analysis of three studies was conducted to determine GAD-7 factor structure stability, create a GAD-Mini version using standard procedures, and evaluate the psychometric properties, validity, sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of both versions in young adults. Results: Exploratory and confirmatory principal components analysis indicated the GAD-7 has a single factor structure with stro

[Psychophysiological characteristics of panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder].

We studied 34 patients with panic disorder, 32 patients with generalized anxiety disorder and 29 healthy controls using clinical-neurological, psychometric, neuropsychological and neurophysiological (auditory event-related potentials) methods. Patients were characterized by pronounced autonomic dysfunctions, a higher level of anxiety and depression as well as cognitive function disturbances in the form of impairment of short-term memory and directed attention in comparison with healthy controls. Patients with generalized anxiety disorder differed from patients with panic disorder by the higher

Physiologic instability in panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Because panic attacks can be accompanied by surges in physiologic activation, we tested the hypothesis that panic disorder is characterized by fluctuations of physiologic variables in the absence of external triggers. METHODS: Sixteen patients with panic disorder, 15 with generalized anxiety disorder, and 19 normal control subjects were asked to sit quietly for 30 min. Electrodermal, cardiovascular, and respiratory measures were analyzed using complex demodulation to quantify variability in physiologic indices. RESULTS: Both patient groups reported equally more anxiety and cardia

Association between Internet gaming disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

Introduction This study evaluates the association between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and the role of behavior inhibition in young adults. Methods We recruited 87 people with IGD and a control group of 87 people without a history of IGD. All participants underwent a diagnostic interview based on the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, IGD and GAD criteria, and completed a questionnaire on behavior inhibition, depression, and anxiety. Results Logistic regression revealed that adults with GAD were more likely (odds rat

Cerebral hemodynamic response to generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the least studied among anxiety disorders. Therefore, we aimed to compare the cervical blood flow velocities using doppler ultrasonography in untreated chronic GAD patients and healthy individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, thirty-eight GAD patients were enrolled. And thirty-eight healthy volunteers were recruited as control participants. The common carotid artery (CCA), internal carotid artery (ICA), and vertebral artery (VA) of both sides were explored. Also, we trained machine learning models based on cervical arteries characteri

Toward Linguistic Recognition of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) refers to extreme, uncontrollable, and persistent worry and anxiety. The disorder is known to affect the social functioning and well-being of millions of people, but despite its prevalence and burden to society, it has proven difficult to identify unique behavioral markers. Interestingly, the worrying behavior observed in GAD is argued to stem from a verbal linguistic process. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate if GAD can be predicted from the language people use to put their anxious worries into words. Given the importance

Emotion Regulation Flexibility in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: People differ in their affective styles, which refers to habitual use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies. Previous research has shown that mental health is associated with an individual's adaptive flexibility of emotion regulation strategies rather than any one particular ER strategy. METHODS: The present study employed a person-centered approach using latent profile analyses to distinguish patients with generalized anxiety disorder based on their responses on an affective styles measure. RESULTS: Results of the latent profile analysis supported a three-class solution. Class 1

Psychiatrists' treatment preferences for generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to ascertain psychiatrists' treatment preferences for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and compare them to the same psychiatrists' treatment preferences in the hypothetical scenario that treatment is to be administered to themselves as patients. METHODS: A questionnaire was completed by 221 psychiatrists from 3 Balkan countries. They were asked to indicate their treatment preferences for patients with GAD and for themselves as patients. RESULTS: A large majority of psychiatrists chose selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors/serotonin and norepineph

Beyond butterflies: generalized anxiety disorder in adolescents.

A generalized anxiety disorder diagnosis must include thorough history-taking, the use of age-appropriate screening tools, and physical assessment. Research and development into the use of screening tools and effectiveness of treatment strategies for generalized anxiety disorder is needed to better manage adolescents with the disorder.

Episodic future thinking in generalized anxiety disorder.

Research on future-oriented cognition in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has primarily focused on worry, while less is known about the role of episodic future thinking (EFT), an imagery-based cognitive process. To characterize EFT in this disorder, we used the experimental recombination procedure, in which 21 GAD and 19 healthy participants simulated positive, neutral and negative novel future events either once or repeatedly, and rated their phenomenological experience of EFT. Results showed that healthy controls spontaneously generated more detailed EFT over repeated simulations. Both gro

Characteristics of worry in generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Groups of clients and community volunteers with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and clients with Panic Disorder were compared to a group with elevated worry but without GAD on a range of measures, to identify individual differences beyond a high propensity to worry. METHOD: Participants completed standardised questionnaires and a behavioural worry task that assesses frequency and severity of negative thought intrusions. RESULTS: Relative to high worriers, clients with GAD had higher scores on trait anxiety, depression, more negative beliefs about worry, a greater

Attention training for generalized social anxiety disorder.

Attentional bias toward negative social cues is thought to serve an etiological and/or maintaining role in social anxiety disorder (SAD). The current study tested whether training patients to disengage from negative social cues may ameliorate social anxiety in patients (N = 36) with a primary diagnosis of generalized SAD. Patients were randomly assigned to either an attention training condition (n = 18), in which patients completed a modified dot-probe task designed to facilitate attentional disengagement from disgusted faces, or a control dot-probe task condition (n = 18). As predicted, patie

Generalized anxiety disorder: practical assessment and management.

Generalized anxiety disorder is common among patients in primary care. Affected patients experience excessive chronic anxiety and worry about events and activities, such as their health, family, work, and finances. The anxiety and worry are difficult to control and often lead to physiologic symptoms, including fatigue, muscle tension, restlessness, and other somatic complaints. Other psychiatric problems (e.g., depression) and nonpsychiatric factors (e.g., endocrine disorders, medication adverse effects, withdrawal) must be considered in patients with possible generalized anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder: What are we missing?

One of the most prevalent anxiety conditions seen in primary care is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Numerous physical ailments frequently accompany the psychic symptoms of anxiety, which often drive patients to ask for help. In spite of the high incidence of GAD, only 30% of sufferers are diagnosed. Furthermore, very few patients are prescribed medication or referred to a psychiatrist. The key aim is to ensure the early detection and management of these patients. Developing physician education programs may improve the identification of GAD. The use of simple diagnostic tools would also ai

Long term therapy of generalized anxiety disorder.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common (lifetime prevalence: 5.1%), recurrent condition, which often heralds other psychiatric disorders, notably depression. As by definition it is a disorder progressing over months, treatment should be designed on a long term basis. And yet, few studies have been conducted beyond the classical 6-8 weeks characterizing the acute treatment phase. This is especially true of anxiolytics, but also of antidepressants, with the exception of paroxetine and venlafaxine, which are the only drugs approved in this indication in Western countries. The efficacy of

Generalized anxiety disorder in children and adolescents.

Children and adolescents with GAD suffer from excessive, pervasive worries that interfere with social, academic, and family functioning. The comorbidity rate with other anxiety disorders and major depression is high. The course tends to be chronic, and evidence shows continuity between anxiety disorders in youth and adulthood. Individual and group CBT and the incorporation of family anxiety management training have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of childhood GAD. No double-blind, placebo-controlled, pharmacotherapy trials with adequate sample sizes for children and adolescents with GAD

Generalized anxiety disorder, psychiatric comorbidities, and suicide.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested a positive association between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and suicidal symptoms, particularly suicidal thoughts. Nevertheless, whether GAD is an independent risk factor for subsequent suicide is poorly understood. METHODS: Analyzing data on the entire Taiwanese population (N = 29,077,426), we followed 322,855 patients with GAD and 1,291,420 individuals without GAD matched for birth date and sex over the period from 2003 to 2017. Deaths by suicide were confirmed using Taiwan’s Database of All-cause Mortality. Psychiatric disorders comorbid with
