Appendicitis represents a common and severe gastrointestinal illness in younger individuals worldwide. The disease is characterized by an excessive inflammatory response and it is believed that bacterial overgrowth due to blockage of the appendix lumen might be involved. Despite the high incidence, only limited data on the pathophysiological changes exist; in particular, the innate immune responses involved are largely unknown. Real-time PCR analysis of tissue samples from inflamed and normal appendices demonstrated differentially regulated expression patterns of epithelial-derived antimicrobi

Pullorum disease is a bacterial disease caused by Salmonella pullorum in chickens, which is characterized by gastrointestinal infection and diarrhea. In traditional perspectives, research on pullorum disease primarily focused on clinical symptoms, epidemiological characteristics, and the pathogenic sites. This study, however, approaches the subject from the standpoint of host genetic basis and gut microbiota. For the positive and negative offspring chicks, which are the offspring of positive roosters and hens and negative roosters and hens, respectively, we conducted whole-genome association a

The ecological risks posed by incompletely degraded antibiotic intermediates in aquatic environments warrant significant attention. This study investigated the degradation mechanisms of sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole) and quinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin) during thermally activated persulfate (TAP) treatment. The main degradation mechanisms for sulfonamides involved S-N bond cleavage and -NH2 oxidation mediated by sulfate and hydroxyl radicals, whereas quinolone degradation occurred primarily through piperazine ring cleavage facilitated by a single linear oxygen. Toxic degr

Microplastics (MPs) could be as a vector to colonize microorganisms and antibiotic resistance gene (ARGs) in surface water. However, little information is known regarding their changes by the presence of MPs in wastewater treatment. Here, the effects of different concentrations and sizes of polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) on the distribution and removal of microbial communities and ARGs under ultraviolet disinfection of urban sewage have been systematically studied. Results showed that the presence of MPs altered abundance and functions of microorganisms in wastewater, despite different effe

Antibiotic resistance leads to poor outcomes in cirrhosis. Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is associated with reduction in antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) burden in patients without cirrhosis; however, the impact in cirrhosis is unclear. We aimed to study the effect of capsule and enema FMT on ARG abundance in fecal samples, which were collected during two published FMT trials in patients with cirrhosis on rifaximin, lactulose, and proton pump inhibitors. ARGs were identified using metagenomics and mapped against the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database. Changes in ARG abundance wer

Mercury (Hg) methylation is a microbially mediated process that converts inorganic Hg into bioaccumulative, neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). The metabolic activity of methylating organisms is highly dependent on biogeochemical conditions, which subsequently influences MeHg production. However, our understanding of the ecophysiology of methylators in natural ecosystems is still limited. Here, we identified potential locations of MeHg production in the anoxic, sulfidic hypolimnion of a freshwater lake. At these sites, we used shotgun metagenomics to characterize microorganisms with the Hg-methyl

A membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to treat ciprofloxacin (CIP)-contaminated artificial wastewater. The microbial community structure and the abundance of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the MBR were studied at four CIP dosages (0, 5 mg·L-1, 10 mg·L-1, and 15 mg·L-1). The results showed that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes remained the dominant phylum, with relative abundances of 57.5% and 12.7%, respectively, as the dosage of CIP was increased from 0 mg·L-1 to 15 mg·L-1. Rhodocyclaceae, Chitinophagaceae, and Comamonadaceae became the dominant family with abundances of 29.96%, 5.44%, a

Coeliac disease (CD) development involves genetic (HLA-DQ2/DQ8) and environmental factors. Herein, the influence of the HLA-DQ genotype on the gut colonization process of breast-fed children was determined. A cohort of 20 newborns, with at least one first-degree relative with CD, were classified according to their HLA-DQ genotype into high, intermediate and low genetic risk groups, showing 24-28%, 7-8% and less than 1% probability to develop CD, respectively. Faecal microbiota was analysed at 7 days, 1 and 4 months of children's age by fluorescence in situ hybridization. When considering all d

Natural honey is preferred over honey from farmed bees in Vietnam, often commanding higher prices; therefore, it needs proper guidance. Environmental DNA from natural honey can be used to monitor its safety and authenticate its quality, as it contains DNA traces from various organisms. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was employed to identify risk factors in three natural honey samples from Mu Cang Chai, one of the central honey-producing regions in Northwest Vietnam. Our data revealed that more than 95% of the identified DNA belonged to bacteria in all three samples. Some opportu

Concerns regarding biological risk in environment have garnered increasing attention. Manure has been believed to be a significant source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soil. Nevertheless, the profile of microbial contamination including ARGs, virulence factor genes (VFGs) and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs) in different manure-amended soils remain largely unknown. Here, we conducted the systematic metagenome-based study to explore changes in resistome, VFGs and HBPs in soils treated by frequently-used manures. The results revealed that many manure-borne ARGs, VFGs, and

Tetracycline (TC)-copper (Cu) co-contamination can impair soil functioning and intensify selection for antibiotic resistance. In a 49-day microcosm experiment, we evaluated the effects of Chlorella pyrenoidosa supplementation on soils treated with TC (0, 30, or 100 mg·kg-1) and Cu (0, 100, or 500 mg·kg-1). TC removal, extractable Cu, soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs), and microbial community composition were assessed. In unamended contaminated microcosms, TC dissipation ranged from 22.7% to 43.5%, whereas C. pyrenoidosa amendment increased

Contamination of duck litter is a major contributor to frequent disease outbreaks in the scaled dry-litter rearing system, posing serious threats to duck health. Although compound microbial intelligent membrane fermentation has multiple advantages, its impacts on the litter virome and resistome remain poorly characterized. This study employed metaviromics to examine the effects of compound microbial intelligent membrane high-temperature fermentation on duck litter from four treatment groups: deep-layer fermentation (DL-D), shallow-layer fermentation (DL-S-NAF), shallow-layer without fermentati

No standardized computational pipeline exists for systematically prioritizing microbial metabolite-associated host genes and protein-ligand complexes from publicly available chemical, genomic, and structural databases. This article describes an eight-stage workflow that accepts a user-defined set of gut microbiota-derived metabolites and produces a ranked shortlist of candidate metabolite-associated host genes, enriched biological pathways, and structurally prioritized protein-ligand complexes for experimental follow-up. The pipeline integrates (i) chemoinformatic metabolite profiling; (ii) mu

Biohydrogen production from organic waste or wastewater by eco-friendly methods has attracted attention in recent years. However, the biohydrogen yield still far below the theoretical value. In this study, humic acid (HA), a solid redox mediator (RM), was used to enhance the biohydrogen production from glucose. The internal mechanism based on microbial community and functional genes were explored. The results showed that the optimal dosages of HA were 80 and 150 mg/l with the biohydrogen yield of 312.7 and 315.5 ml/g glucose, which was higher than that in control by above 26.6%. A similar patt

Pesticides can have adverse effects on soil microorganisms, but they are underrepresented in the currently required OECD 216 test for environmental risk assessment of plant protection products (PPP). The guideline monitors soil microbial nitrogen transformation over 28 days, potentially missing long-term effects of persistent pesticides. Additionally, nitrate alone may be not sensitive enough to detect disruptions in microbial functions. We investigated whether functional gene analysis could provide a more sensitive bioindicator of pesticide impact. To compare this method with the standard tes

The continuous accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metals (HMs) during sludge composting poses increasing environmental risks, highlighting the urgent need to explore effective remediation strategies. However, the mechanisms by which microbial additives simultaneously mitigate these two types of pollutants during sludge composting remain unclear. Different doses (0, 0.03 %, 0.09 %, and 0.15 %) of a commercial microbial agent were added during co-composting of sludge and garden waste to evaluate their impacts on the bioavailability of HMs and the abundance of ARGs.
