PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Motor abnormalities are an intrinsic feature of psychosis. Neurological soft signs, Parkinsonism, dyskinesia, and other motor phenomena are frequently observed in subjects at clinical or genetic risk for psychosis as well as first-episode patients, chronic patients. Here, we review the most recent literature on motor assessments and pathophysiology in psychosis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Instrumental measures of fine motor performance, balance, spontaneous motor activity, and gesture indicated motor abnormalities in subjects at risk and across stages of schizophrenia. Motor phenomen

The molecular biology of the neurofibromatoses is fascinating, both because the process of obtaining the data has been instructive in investigating other genetic disorders and because those data will be so informative about physiological and pathological phenomena well beyond the neurofibromatoses themselves. In this brief overview, the highlights of the molecular biology of NF-1 and NF-2 are noted and their significance considered in terms of key clinical facts.

Development and growth of odontogenic tumours depend on impairment of numerous genes and molecules. In recent years, most of the genes involved in dental development were identified. This produced a new basis for the study of oral pathology and maxillofacial carcinogenesis. A better understanding of these molecular phenomena should allow to better determine the evolution of such lesions. Research breakthroughs should facilitate the development of new molecular and genetic therapeutic perspectives.

Autoimmune phenomena, particularly autoimmune cytopenias (AIC), are common complications in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), arising from the interplay of predisposing genetic and immunologic conditions and extrinsic triggering factors, such as infections and drugs. In this article, we provide insights into the pathogenesis of CLL-associated AIC, discuss diagnostic criteria and treatment recommendations, and present the most recent data on the impact of targeted agents on the management of AIC.

Hospitalized patients are in danger of deep venous thrombosis either due to a genetic tendency, immobilization or the underlying medical condition. Paradoxically heparin, the substance used to prevent this complication, can lead to thrombo-embolic phenomena, which can be life threatening. We report a case of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, which caused a massive pulmonary embolism, and its management by administering a thrombolytic agent in a situation where bleeding seems inevitable.

UNLABELLED: Moisture accumulation in building structures, the microbial ecology of water-damaged sites and human exposure to biological contaminants are complex phenomena and may result in various types of indoor air pollution and adverse health outcomes. Commonly reported are building-related irritation symptoms, respiratory infections and non-specific symptoms and occasionally neurological impairment. Various diseases have been associated with mold exposure, e.g. an increased risk of asthma development and exacerbation as well as clusters of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, pulmonary hemorrhage

The eye has played a major role in human genomics including gene therapy. It is the fourth most common organ system after integument (skin, hair and nails), nervous system, and musculoskeletal system to be involved in genetic disorders. The eye is involved in single gene disorders and those caused by multifactorial etiology. Retinoblastoma was the first human cancer gene to be cloned. Leber hereditary optic neuropathy was the first mitochondrial disorder described. X-Linked red-green color deficiency was the first X-linked disorder described. The eye, unlike any other body organ, allows direct

Artificial life in-materio is the exploration of emergent life-like phenomena within physical material substrates. A rich variety of physical phenomena may support life-like behaviours, exploiting fundamentally different principles than biology. Here, we uncover life-like behaviours in artificial spin ice, a nanomagnetic metamaterial. In artificial spin ice, virtual creatures can be defined as spatio-temporal magnetic patterns that exist in the collective state of interacting nanomagnets. Pairing magnetic simulations with a genetic algorithm, we discover a diverse set of creatures, with behavi

The term skin fragility disorders describes a group of conditions in which the structural integrity of the skin is compromised and its resistance to external shear forces diminished. Skin fragility can have different causes, ranging from genetic variations to inflammatory or physical phenomena. The genetic skin fragility disorders, collectively called epidermolysis bullosa, serve as a paradigm for the study of causes and mechanisms of skin fragility. Recent biomedical research has revealed substantial genetic heterogeneity of the epidermolysis bullosa group, delivered ample new knowledge on it

Identification of mutations responsible for human monogenic hereditary diseases has lately undergone rapid development. It is now possible to establish the mutation spectrum for a given genetic disease and international databases are now available on the Internet. New mutational mechanisms have been identified:transposition, inversion, trinucleotide repeat expansion. At the disease level, knowledge of molecular defects has allowed to better delimit mechanisms of gain or loss of function, to understand dominant or recessive mode of inheritance, to explain anticipation phenomena, to identify fou

Reward is a concept fundamental to discussions of drug abuse and addiction. The idea that altered sensitivity to either drug-reward, or to rewards in general, contributes to, or results from, drug-taking is a common theme in several theories of addiction. However, the concept of reward is problematic in that it is used to refer to apparently different behavioural phenomena, and even to diverse neurobiological processes (reward pathways). Whether these different phenomena are different behavioural expressions of a common underlying process is not established, and much research suggests that the

In recent years, much debate has surrounded the neutrophil defects associated with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). Controversy exists on the existence of the defect itself, its genetic nature, and the molecular entities and mechanisms which may be involved in such defects and subsequent biological phenomena. This review attempts to summarize neutrophil functions and their role in periodontal diseases, as well as the observed neutrophil defects reported for LJP. J Periodontol 1996;67:345-354.

Addictive behaviors-including the misuse of tobacco, alcohol, illicit substances, and compulsive activities such as gambling, overeating, and sexual excess-remain widespread and profoundly burdensome on both individuals and societies. Their impact is multifaceted, encompassing adverse health outcomes, increased criminal activity, and significant economic costs due to lost productivity. Addiction is a highly complex condition shaped by genetic predispositions, environmental influences, and behavioral factors, all of which contribute to disruptions in neural regulation and compulsive decision-ma

In the last years numerous reports describing a possible association between administration of vaccines and development of autoimmune phenomena and overt autoimmune disease were published. Possible mechanisms of induction of autoimmune phenomena by vaccines and their excipients are probably similar to those implicated in induction by infectious agents. Here we report the case of an 11-year-old girl who developed autoimmune hepatitis type II after four weeks from vaccination against human papillomavirus. The possible relationships between the use of adjuvated vaccine against papillomavirus and

Genome-wide association studies typically target inherited autosomal variants, but less studied genetic mechanisms can play a role in complex disease. Sex-linked variants aside, three genetic phenomena can induce differential risk in maternal versus paternal lineages of affected individuals: 1. maternal effects, reflecting the maternal genome's influence on prenatal development; 2. mitochondrial variants, which are inherited maternally; 3. autosomal genes, whose effects depend on parent of origin. We algebraically show that small asymmetries in family histories of affected individuals may refl

A considerable body of evidence suggests the involvement of serotonin neurotransmission in the pathogenesis of panic disorder. Research on pathways and functions of tryptophan, an essential amino acid converted into serotonin, may advance our understanding of serotonergic actions in panic disorder and related phenomena. The investigative approaches in this field include manipulations of tryptophan availability as well as genetic association and functional brain imaging studies. In this review we examine the principle findings of these studies and propose further research directions.

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by abnormal, sustained or intermittent movements and/or postures, which are often exacerbated by voluntary action and associated with overflow phenomena. The current classification is structured along two axes: a clinical axis, which considers features such as age at onset and pattern of distribution, and an etiological axis, which integrates genetic, acquired and anatomical causes. Genetic dystonias constitute a broad and heterogeneous group, frequently beginning in childhood or adolescence, and may present as isolated, combined or complex forms.

Immune cytopenias, such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia, immune thrombocytopenia, and Evans syndrome, are characterized by autoantibodies targeting various blood cells, initiating their destruction. Interactions between T cells, B cells, their ultimate maturational plasma cell descendants, dendritic cells, and macrophages result in antibody production, including the autoreactive ones. Autoimmune phenomena can be idiopathic or associated with various immune dysregulation conditions or malignancies. Interventions disrupting this complex network at different levels have been used to treat immune c
