[Important progress for the ophthalmologist in basic genetic research].

Ophthalmologists and human geneticists share a long standing interest in hereditary diseases and anomalies of the eye. Many of the primary genetic eye diseases are known, as ophthalmic symptoms are frequently part of a pleiotropic gene effect or the eye is affected secondarily. Progress in human genetics has also improved the understanding of genetic eye diseases. This can be demonstrated in the analysis of the function of color-vision genes and their abnormalities as well as the retinoblastoma gene. A line can be drawn from early formal analysis of pedigrees to cytogenetic mapping and, finall

Multiracial individuals' perspectives on participating in genetics research.

The vast majority of genetics research is confined to a relatively narrow subset of the global population, limiting the benefits of this research. Recommendations to ameliorate this issue frequently include calls to recruit diverse populations through community engagement, an approach that has been effective in genetics, but has not explicitly included Multiracial individuals, despite this being the fastest-growing population in the United States. As such, this study explored Multiracial individuals' perspectives on: (1) what "Multiracial community" means; (2) concerns regarding ancestry-based

[Advance in genetics research on Gastrointestinal polyposis syndromes].

Gastrointestinal polyposis syndromes are primarily characterized by multiple polyps in the gastrointestinal tract, with their pathogenic mechanisms largely related to genetic factors and involving multiple signaling pathways. Adenomatous polyposis syndromes are mainly associated with APC gene variants, while some cases may arise from MUTYH gene variants. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is primarily linked to STK11 gene variants. Juvenile polyposis syndrome is mainly associated with variants in the SMAD4 and BMPR1A genes. PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome is predominantly caused by PTEN gene variants. Hered

[Advances in genetic research of congenital hypothyroidism in China].

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH), which results from insufficient thyroid hormone biosynthesis, is one of the most common neonatal endocrine disorders. Thyroid dysgenesis and thyroid dyshormonogenesis are the two causes of CH and either one will lead to deficiencies of enzymes during thyroid hormone biosynthesis and insufficient thyroid hormone biosynthesis. Recently, researchers have performed extensive studies on genetics of CH. This paper reviews genes reported to be associated with CH in China.

Factors associated with enrollment in cancer genetics research.

Previous studies have identified low patient accrual in large-scale cancer clinical trials, particularly for underrepresented groups, such as ethnic minorities, females, and patients >65 years. As there have been few studies examining participation in cancer genetics epidemiologic research, our objective was to identify clinical and demographic factors predicting enrollment in these studies. A total of 1,111 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer presenting to a gastrointestinal oncology clinic were approached to enroll in a study investigating the role of the MSH6 gene in familial colorect

Research directions in genetic counselling: a review of the literature.

There is a growing body of literature considering genetic counselling services in a variety of clinical settings. This literature encompasses both predictive and diagnostic testing, from the viewpoints of service providers and recipients. It also embraces a wide range of conceptions of the nature and goals of genetic counselling. However, research in this area has been criticised for a focus on outcome rather than process, and it has been suggested that this focus limits its practical use. The purpose of this review is twofold: (1) to describe the varying concepts of counselling which appear t

[Genetically modified animal models in cardiovascular research].

It is a basic tenet of molecular and clinical medicine that specific protein complements underlie cell and organ function. Since cellular and ultimately organ function depend upon the polypeptides that are present, it is not surprising that when function is altered changes in the protein pools occur. In the heart, numerous examples of contractile protein changes correlate with functional alterations, both during normal development and during the development of numerous pathologies. Similarly, different congenital heart diseases are characterized by certain shifts in the motor proteins. To unde

Clinical and research issues in breast cancer genetics.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S. The risk factors for developing breast cancer include increasing age, a family history of breast cancer, and the lack of a child by age 30. A substantial fraction of breast cancer, however, occurs in women who have no identifiable risk factors. The diagnosis, pathology, treatment, and presymptomatic testing of cancer susceptibility genes are reviewed. Syndromes with an associated risk of breast cancer are described, such as hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, ataxia telangiectasia, and Cowden's di

[Progress in genetic research on non-immune hydrops fetalis].

Non-immune factors are the most common cause of hydrops fetalis, which may manifest as abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body cavities. Hydrops fetalis is a complex condition with a high mortality rate. The prognosis is depending on the underlying disease and is particularly poor in those with chromosomal aberrations or monogenic disorders. In this paper, advance in the research on non-immune hydrops fetalis is reviewed.

Eating disorders: the current status of molecular genetic research.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are complex disorders characterized by disordered eating behavior where the patient's attitude towards weight and shape, as well as their perception of body shape, are disturbed. Formal genetic studies on twins and families suggested a substantial genetic influence for AN and BN. Candidate gene studies have initially focused on the serotonergic and other central neurotransmitter systems and on genes involved in body weight regulation. Hardly any of the positive findings achieved in these studies were unequivocally confirmed or substantiated in met
