OBJECTIVES: Gentiana macrophylla Pall. (Gentianaceae) is a medicinally important perennial herb. Iridoids are the main chemical constituents of G. macrophylla. The scarcity of the wild resource has led to increased attention to cultivated G. macrophylla. However, little is known about the metabolic differences and the regulatory mechanisms between cultivated and wild G. macrophylla.
METHODS: This study utilized untargeted metabolomics and transcriptomics to reveal differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between wild and cultivated.
RESULTS: The

Xanthones are chemical substances in higher plants, marine organisms, and lower microorganisms. The most prevalent naturally occurring sources of xanthones are those belonging to the families Caryophyllaceae, Guttiferae, and Gentianaceae. Structurally, xanthones (9H xanthan-9-one) are heterocyclic compounds with oxygen and a γ-pyrone component. They are densely packed with a two-benzene ring structure. The carbons in xanthones are numbered from their nucleus and biosynthetic construct. They have mixed shikimate-acetate (higher plants) and acetate-malonate (lower organisms) biosynthetic origins

Gentian (Gentiana lutea L., Gentianaceae) root extract (GRE) is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. However, its bioactive potential is limited in conventional forms due to the low bioavailability and short elimination half-life of the dominant bioactive compound, gentiopicroside. The aim of study was to encapsulate GRE in the lipid-based gastroretentive delivery system that could provide high yield and encapsulation efficiency, as well as the biphasic release of gentiopicroside from the tablets obtained by direct compression. Solid lipid microparticles (SLM) loaded with GRE

Synthetic anthelmintic drugs not only contribute to the development of pathogen resistance and environmental pollution but also to the development of pathogen resistance. Therefore, identifying the anthelmintic properties of widely used medicinal plants could be of great practical interest to veterinary and human medicine. In our experiment, we evaluated the in vitro survivability of the noninvasive and invasive (L1-2 and L3, respectively) larvae of Strongyloides papillosus and Haemonchus contortus subject to aqueous solutions of ethanolic tinctures of traditional medicinal plants (46 species)

Hydroponic culture systems are subject to high risks of diseases caused by zoosporic plant pathogens. Control is generally difficult because of the rapid spread of zoospores in the nutrient solutions. In Japan, tomato and eustoma, which are cultivated using the D-tray and nutrient film techniques, respectively, are susceptible to diseases caused by Pythium aphanidermatum and P. irregulare. We used loop-mediated isothermal amplification to identify potential contamination sources of these two pathogens by monitoring their presence in the water supply wells, seedling terraces, nutrient solutions

Gentiopicroside (GPS), a main active secoiridoid glucoside derived from the roots of perennial herbs in the Gentianaceae family, has antispasmodic and relaxant effects. However, the vasorelaxant effects of GPS on aortic rings and the molecular mechanisms involved in these effects are not yet clear. Therefore, we investigated whether GPS inhibits phenylephrine- (PE-) or KCl-induced contractions in isolated rat thoracic aortic rings. The present study found that GPS produced a dose-dependent relaxation in aortic rings precontracted with PE or KCl and significantly reduced CaCl2-, narciclasine- (
