Unicameral bone cyst of the tibia complicated by genu valgum.

Progressive tibia valga occurred in an adolescent girl after curettage and allografting of a large unicameral bone cyst of the tibia. The valgus deformity was corrected by a closing-wedge osteotomy, which resulted in a good functional and cosmetic result. The progressive valgus deformity might have been caused by stimulation of overgrowth of the medial tibial metaphysis.

[Genu valgum after proximal tibial fracture in children (author's transl)].

Residual valgus deformity and overgrowth was found in 4 children out of 6 with proximal tibial metaphyseal fractures. Primary reduction of this minimally displaced fracture under general anaesthesia is advised. In case of an irreducable fracture open revision is suggested. In case of an established valgus of more then 20 degrees a tibial wedge osteotomy is necessary. Recurrence of the deformity is very common especially in young children.

Genu valgum secondary to focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia of the distal femur.

We report a case of unilateral genu valgum secondary to focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia (FFCD) isolated in the posterolateral cortex of the distal femur. This case is the first incidence of a discrete fibrous band occurring in conjunction with a FFCD lesion in the distal posterolateral femur treated with excision of the tether and the overlying periosteum with curettage of the cortical focal fibrocartilaginous defect. Treatment was considered successful with gradual resolution of the 30 degrees valgus deformity over 24 months, and we avoided the necessity of corrective osteotomy and its ass

Contributions of the Distal Femur and Proximal Tibia to Idiopathic Genu Varum and Genu Valgum in Adolescents.

BACKGROUD: Different from adults, adolescents with genu varum or valgum can be treated with hemi-epiphysiodesis. We conducted a study to report our recent experience of treating idiopathic genu varum and valgum with clinical relevance to planning of hemi-epiphysiodesis. The aim of this study was to compare the varus and valgus groups focusing on the contribution of the distal femur and proximal tibia to the deformities. METHODS: Among patients who visited the outpatient clinic during the recent 4 years, adolescents with genu varum (the varus group) or valgum (the valgus group) greater than 5°

Genu valgum deformity - correction by a wedgeless implantless femoral "V" osteotomy.

Coronal malalignment of the knee joint is very common in developing countries especially because of nutritional rickets. Significant valgus deformity needs to be treated surgically to improve appearance, gait and function of the patient. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the results of supracondylar "V" osteotomy as a surgical technique for correction of the valgus knee deformity. This study was conducted in a tertiary level teaching hospital and 30 cases were included in the study. For all the patients deformity was assessed using ana- tomical tibiofemoral angle, mechanica

Correlation of radiological and clinical measurement of genu valgum in children.

INTRODUCTION: Genu valgus is a condition characterised by a lateral shift of the knee's mechanical axis. The deformity can be characterised using clinical examinations and long hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angles, but it is unclear how these investigations correlate with each other. Our aim was to examine the correlation between clinical and radiographic measurements of the lower extremities in children. METHODS: A total of 49 children between 5.9 and 16.7 years of age who had been referred with genu valgum deformity were included. They all had their intermalleolar (IM) distance measured and a standa

A Case Report of Primary Synovial Chondromatosis with Bilateral Genu Valgum.

INTRODUCTION: Synovial chondromatosis is the rare and benign metaplasia of the synovial membrane resulting in the formation of multiple intra-articular cartilaginous loose bodies. Synovial chondromatosis is known by several other names including articular chondrosis and synovial chondrosis. CASE REPORT: An 18-year-old boy presented with complaints of difficulty in walking with growing deformity with restriction and painful movements of knee joints bilaterally. The patient gives a history of swelling which was initially there about 8 years back and was accompanied by fever. The patient has tak

Validation of a genu valgum model in a rabbit hind limb.

Numerous techniques exist to correct pediatric angular deformity by asymmetrically inhibiting physeal growth. Despite decades of surgical experience, little is known about the determinants of success or failure of temporary hemiepiphysiodesis. We lack a basic understanding of tolerances and kinematics of the surgically restrained physis. Furthermore, little is known about the influence of implant design and placement on efficacy of deformity correction and rebound growth. We have undertaken a pilot research study with the goal of producing genu valgum in New Zealand white rabbits. This report

Genu valgum in children with coxa vara resulting from hip disease.

Three patients with chronic hip disease and progressive coxa vera deformity also had an unrecognized compensatory ipsilateral genu valgum until the primary hip deformity had been corrected operatively. This unrecognized genu valgum may become subtly worse in a growing child because of lateralization of the mechanical axis of the lower extremity with respect to the knee joint. Operative correction of coxa vara acutely moves the mechanical axis farther laterally, causing the occult genu valgum to become clinically apparent. The genu valgum may subtly worsen over time in a growing child because o

Congenital patellar dislocation with genu valgum and Klinefelter syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital patellar dislocation (CPD) is a complex disease lacking consensus on the treatment. While genu valgum is a risk factor for patellar dislocation in general, it is less common in the congenital cases. In this report, a retrospective analysis of a child with bilateral CPD and genu valgum is presented, detailing the clinical characteristics, diagnostic approach, surgical intervention, and outcomes. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old boy presented with an abnormal gait and Klinefelter syndrome. Comprehensive preoperative imaging evaluations were made to assess osseous and soft t

Distal femoral osteotomy for genu valgum deformity caused by malunited Hoffa fracture.

Hoffa fractures are unstable intra-articular fractures of the femoral condyle that occur in the coronal plane.Insufficient anatomical reduction and internal fixation may lead to non-union or malunion. A 39-year-old man was involved in a traffic accident while riding a motorcycle and was diagnosed with left Hoffa fracture and avulsion fracture of the femoral attachment of the medial collateral ligament. Open reduction and internal fixation were performed 5 days after injury. The patient experienced intermittent knee pain, joint contracture and deformity, and attended our hospital for further tr

Idiopathic Genu Valgum and Its Association With Obesity in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Obesity as a cause of lower extremity deformity in children has been well established. This deformity is most often seen as tibia vara, however, at our institution we have observed more obese children and adolescents over age 7 years with excessive or progressive idiopathic genu valgum. Our hypothesis is that children with idiopathic genu valgum have high rates of obesity which impact the severity of their disease. METHODS: Retrospective review of existing data was performed on 66 consecutive children/112 limbs over age 7 years with idiopathic genu valgum, seen from 2010 to 2013.

Experience of supracondylar cheveron osteotomy for genu valgum in 115 adolescent knees.

PURPOSE: Medial close wedge Coventry type osteotomy is commonly performed procedure for adoloscent Genu valgum. However this osteotomy has some inherent problems, a wedge resection causes shortening of affected site. An additional plate for stabilization causes increase in soft tissue dissection and surgical time. A cheveron osteotomy is an alternative procedure, not requiring any internal fixation due to its inherent stability. We started this study with aim to analyze the results of Cheveron osteotomy, to see if the osteotomy was stable enough without implants, time required for healing of o

Development of genu valgum after removal of osteochondromas from the proximal tibia.

Genu valgum is a well-documented deformity secondary to hereditary multiple exostoses about the knee. Post-traumatic tibia valgus is also a well-described phenomenon that occurs in children who sustain an incomplete fracture of the proximal tibia. The finding is considered to be secondary to asymmetric blood flow to the proximal tibial physis. The existing literature only describes genu valgum as a sequela of the hereditary multiple exostoses disorder itself and does not address genu valgum occurring as a postoperative consequence of mass excision. In this paper, we report on three pediatric p

[Debeyre's unicondylar osteotomy. Results in the treatment of lax arthritic genu valgum].

64 unicondylar varus osteotomies carried out on lax knees with advanced degenerative arthritis were reviewed with a mean follow-up of 9 years (5 to 18 years). 9 knees had to be reoperated early (during the 1st and 2nd post-operative year) because of complications occurring when this type of osteotomy was first performed. Among the 55 others, 44 knees are still markedly improved by the osteotomy: the knees are painless or almost painless, and restoration of the tension of the lateral ligaments at the time of osteotomy makes the laxity disappear quite lastingly. Modification of the articular rel

The Effect of Total Knee Arthroplasty on Hindfoot Alignment in Patients with Severe Genu Varum and Genu Valgum.

BACKGROUND: The maintenance of deformity in the ankle and hindfoot after correction of knee deformity following knee arthroplasty may cause abnormal tension in the knee and patient dissatisfaction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of knee arthroplasty on the hindfoot alignment in patients with severe genu varum and valgum. METHODS: A total of 84 patients with primary osteoarthritis, were enrolled in the study. The knee deformity was measured using a long leg film before surgery. The long axial radiographic view of hindfoot was taken in the standing position for all patients,
