Risk map for cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ethiopia based on environmental factors as revealed by geographical information systems and statistics.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease strongly associated with poverty. Treatment is problematic and no vaccine is available. Ethiopia has seen new outbreaks in areas previously not known to be endemic, often with co-infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with rates reaching 5.6% of the cases. The present study concerns the development of a risk model based on environmental factors using geographical information systems (GIS), statistical analysis and modelling. Odds ratio (OR) of bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the relati

Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping diagnostic services and sub-district administrative boundaries in tuberculosis: A novel attempt from India.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death globally, with India accounting for 25% of the total disease burden. A significant barrier to elimination is delayed or inequitable access to diagnostic services, often accelerated by a lack of granular administrative health boundaries for effective planning. Additionally, identifying the exact locations of TB diagnostic facilities is relevant for understanding the geographic coverage of diagnostic services. METHODS: - Diverse types of data were obtained from multiple health and non-health sources. The study mapped 77 Tuberculosis

Mapping unconventional Leishmania in human and animal leishmaniasis: A scoping review protocol on pathogen diversity, geographic distribution and knowledge gaps.

INTRODUCTION: Leishmaniases are a vector-borne parasitic diseases with diverse clinical manifestations involving multiple Leishmania species and animal hosts. While most leishmaniasis cases are caused by a few well characterized Leishmania species, reports describe infections by unconventional or emerging Leishmania taxa, atypical clinical presentations from classical species, and occurrences of atypical Leishmania in animal hosts. These underrecognized infections present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and are rarely reflected in surveillance systems or clinical guidelines. A systematic

A Novel Epidemiological Approach to Geographically Mapping Population Dry Eye Disease in the United States Through Google Trends.

PURPOSE: Our study fills the spatiotemporal gaps in dry eye disease (DED) epidemiology by using Google Trends as a novel epidemiological tool for geographically mapping DED in relation to environmental risk factors. METHODS: We used Google Trends to extract DED-related queries estimating users' intent from 2004 to 2019 in the United States. We incorporated national climate data to generate heat maps comparing geographic, temporal, and environmental relationships of DED. Multivariable regression models were constructed to generate quadratic forecasts predicting DED and control searches. RESUL

Identification of environmental parameters and risk mapping of visceral leishmaniasis in Ethiopia by using geographical information systems and a statistical approach.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a vector-borne disease strongly influenced by environmental factors, has (re)-emerged in Ethiopia during the last two decades and is currently of increasing public health concern. Based on VL incidence in each locality (kebele) documented from federal or regional health bureaus and/or hospital records in the country, geographical information systems (GIS), coupled with binary and multivariate logistic regression methods, were employed to develop a risk map for Ethiopia with respect to VL based on soil type, altitude, rainfall, slope and temperature. The risk model

New geographical area on the map of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus: First serological evidence in the Hungarian population.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an emerging tick-borne disease that is endemic in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Balkan region of Europe; the disease is spreading northwards following widespread distribution of the main vector, Hyalomma marginatum, which was first found in Hungary in 2011. The aim of this pilot sero-surveillance study was to assess CCHF seroprevalence in Hungary. A total of 2700 serum samples obtained from healthy volunteer blood donors were screened using an in-house immunofluorescence assay and a commercially available ELISA kit. We found ten (0.37 %) serop

Use of a Geographic Information System and lichens to map air pollution in a tropical city: San José, Costa Rica.

There are no studies of air pollution bio-indicators based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Costa Rica. In this study we present the results of a project that analyzed tree trunk lichens as bioindicators of air pollution in 40 urban parks located along the passage of wind through the city of San Jose in 2008 and 2009. The data were processed with GIS and are presented in an easy to understand color coded isoline map. Our results are consistent with the generally accepted view that lichens respond to the movement of air masses, decreasing their cover in the polluted areas. Furthermor

Ecological study and risk mapping of visceral leishmaniasis in an endemic area of Iran based on a geographical information systems approach.

Between 1998 and 2001, a total of 1,062 human cases of visceral leishmaniasis were reported from the rural district of Meshkin-Shahr in the mountainous, north-western Iranian province of Ardabil. In the summer of 2008, a cross-sectional study of dogs was conducted in this endemic area by randomly selecting 384 animals from 21 villages and testing them serologically for leishmaniasis. Villages, in which more than 10% of investigated dogs showed anti- Leishmania titres ≥ 1/320, were considered to be high-risk environments. Regression analysis showed no statistically significant correlation betwe

Geographic information system mapping of pediatric nonaccidental trauma incidence with social deprivation index before, during, and after peak COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for children in the United States, of which pediatric nonaccidental trauma (pNAT) accounts for more than 550,000 cases annually. To our knowledge, there have been no published mapping studies to specifically assess pNAT incidence or how pNAT geographic distributions have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. We performed a geographic information system analysis to evaluate longitudinal trends of pNAT over 10 years by creating a hot spot mapping model to identify locations with high pNAT incidence and compare with risk facto

Clinical Spectrum and Admission Correlates of Complicated Imported Malaria in Polish Travellers: An 11-Year Retrospective Analysis with Geographic Mapping of Travel Destinations.

Background: Complicated malaria occurs in 15-40% of hospitalised imported cases, and European centres often define it more broadly than the WHO 2023 severe-malaria criteria, which, calibrated for semi-immune populations, may under-identify severe disease in non-immune travellers; Central and Eastern European data are limited. We examined the clinical spectrum, travel destinations, and admission correlates of complicated imported malaria in non-immune Polish travellers. Methods: This was a two-centre, 11-year retrospective cohort of 93 laboratory-confirmed episodes in 91 adults (December 2014-O
