Herein, the potential of alkaline hydrothermal environments for the synthesis of possible ancestral pre-RNA nucleobases using cyanide as a primary source of carbon and nitrogen is described. Water cyanide polymerizations were assisted by microwave radiation to obtain high temperature and a relatively high pressure (MWR, 180 °C, 15 bar) and were also carried out using a conventional thermal system (CTS, 80 °C, 1 bar) to simulate subaerial and aerial hydrothermal conditions, respectively, on the early Earth. For these syntheses, the initial concentration of cyanide and the diffusion effects were

Volcano tourism and tourism to geothermal destinations is increasingly popular. If such endeavors are to be a sustainable sector of the tourism industry, tourists must be made aware of the potential health hazards facing them in volcanic environments. With the aim of creating awareness amongst the tourism industry and practitioners of travel medicine, this paper reviews the potential influences and effects of volcanic gases such as carbon dioxide (CO(2)), hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), and hydrogen chloride/hydrochloric acid (HCl). It also reviews the negative health impacts

Hominoid remains from Miocene deposits in India and Pakistan have played a pivotal role in understanding the evolution of great apes and humans since they were first described in the 19th Century. We describe here a hominoid maxillary fragment preserving the canine and cheek teeth collected in 2011 from the Kutch (= Kachchh) basin in the Kutch district, Gujarat state, western India. A basal Late Miocene age is proposed based on the associated faunal assemblage that includes Hipparion and other age-diagnostic mammalian taxa. Miocene Hominoidea are known previously from several areas of the Siwa

The plant ionome reflects an interplay between biological requirements and environmental sources, including soil, bedrock, groundwater, and atmospheric dust, as well as factors controlling the bioavailability. Understanding the sources and processes that shape plant ionome is essential for a range of applications, including environmental monitoring, geological mapping, and mineral exploration. The boreal region presents a scenario where the prevalence of allochthonous glacial sediments decouples soil geochemistry from its bedrock source, complicating geological mapping. We investigated the inf

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a parasitic, vector-borne infection with a broad, global distribution is prevalent in Mashhad, a city in north-eastern Iran, which is known as a significant hyperendemic area both for anthroponotic and zoonotic CL. This study evaluates the spatial distribution probability of CL prevalence by examining various factors such as socio-demography, built environment, geology, and climate within Mashhad. Data from 3,033 CL patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed. Sociological, environmental, and climatic variables were assessed using the generalized linear

Fossil discoveries of early Australopithecus species from Woranso-Mille have played a significant role in improving our understanding of mid-Pliocene hominin evolution and diversity. Here, we describe two mandibles with dentitions, recovered from sediments immediately above a tuff radiometrically dated to 3.76 ± 0.02 Ma, and assess their taxonomic affinity. The two mandibles (MSD-VP-5/16 and MSD-VP-5/50) show morphological similarities with both Australopithecus anamensis and Australopithecus afarensis. Some of the unique features that distinguish Au. anamensis from Au. afarensis are present i

Australopithecus robustus is one of the best represented hominin taxa in Africa, with hundreds of specimens recovered from six fossil localities in the Bloubank Valley area of Gauteng Province, South Africa. However, precise geochronological ages are presently lacking for these fossil cave infills. In this paper, we provide a detailed geological background to a series of hominin fossils retrieved from the newly investigated deposit of Cooper's D (located partway between Sterkfontein and Kromdraai in the Bloubank Valley), including uranium-lead (U-Pb) ages for speleothem material associated wit

The reemerging field of Medical Geology is concerned with the impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes on animal and human health. Most medical geology research has been focused on health problems caused by excess or deficiency of trace elements, exposure to ambient dust, and on other geologically related health problems or health problems for which geoscience tools, techniques, or databases could be applied. Little, if any, attention has been focused on the beneficial health effects of rocks, minerals, and geologic processes. These beneficial effects may have been recognized as lo

The accumulation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in landfills often becomes a serious pollution source of geological environment and groundwater. The geological environment is the carrier of the landfill, and also the main pollution object of the landfill. The main pollution modes of the landfill site to the surrounding geological environment are purging, flushing, leachate, etc. If the leachate leakage cannot be found and repaired in time, it will cause serious harm to the geological environment and groundwater. The cost of geological environment and groundwater sampling through borehole surve

The question of how to mine safely in close multi coal seams is the main concern for coal operators, in particular for large-dip coal seams with complex geological and mechanical conditions. This paper presents a detailed similarity simulation on the movement characteristics of the overburden and the stress distribution of underlying strata in terms of a specific coal mine in the Tielieke mining area of the Kubai coalfield via a three-dimensional photogrammetry system and a high-speed static resistance analyzer. The results show that the overburden strata are asymmetrically deformed around the

A complex mixture of dissolved organic contaminants, emanating from a many decades-old, residual, dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source, migrates through unconfined, moderately heterogeneous, glacial-derived sediments and sedimentary rock in a residential area of Dane County, Wisconsin, USA. A portion of this contaminant plume intersects a large man-made pond, roughly 400 m downgradient of the source zone. Depth-discrete, multilevel groundwater sampling, detailed sedimentological logs, and hydraulic head profiles were used to delineate the spatial distribution of hydraulic, geologic, o

For about the past eight decades, high concentrations of naturally occurring fluoride have been detected in groundwater in different parts of India. The chronic consumption of fluoride in high concentrations is recognized to cause dental and skeletal fluorosis. We have used the random forest machine-learning algorithm to model a data set of 12 600 groundwater fluoride concentrations from throughout India along with spatially continuous predictor variables of predominantly geology, climate, and soil parameters. Despite only surface parameters being available to describe a subsurface phenomenon,

Sulfur dioxide is a possible co-injectant with carbon dioxide in the context of geologic sequestration. Because of the potential of SO2 to acidify formation brines, the extent of SO2 dissolution from the CO2 phase will determine the viability of co-injection. Pressure-, temperature-, and salinity-adjusted values of the SO2 Henry's Law constant and fugacity coefficient were determined. They are predicted to decrease with depth, such that the solubility of SO2 is a factor of 0.04 smaller than would be predicted without these adjustments. To explore the potential effects of transport limitations,

To address the issue of data distortion in traditional well log density reconstruction methods caused by harsh borehole environments in complex heterogeneous formations, and the challenge for general machine learning models to capture high-frequency abrupt change features due to the lack of geophysical constraints, this paper proposes a density curve reconstruction framework integrating geologically-inspired feature engineering and a mutation-aware mechanism. The method first constructs a multi-dimensional enhanced feature space covering sedimentary cycle characteristics and fluid properties t

Detailed geologic surveys and different microscopic and analytical techniques were conducted near Tierra Blanca de Abajo where lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma (MM) are the primary causes of death. Results show that erionite-K occurs as a diagenetic product in altered Oligocene-Miocene rhyolitic tuffs. The microscopic structure of erionite minerals shows concentrations of individual fibers in the range of 0.14-0.547 μm in diameter and 2.81-50 μm in length, with a few "bundles" about 0.2-2.5 μm wide by 10-50 μm long. Chemical properties of erionite show Si/Al in the range of 3.23-3.58 (at

Mosses, algae, and cyanobacteria (lamp-flora) colonize illuminated areas in show caves. This biota is commonly removed by a sodium hypochlorite solution. Because chlorine and other deleterious compounds are released into a cave environment during lamp-flora cleansing, hydrogen peroxide was tested as an alternative agent. In a multidisciplinary study conducted in the Kateinská Cave (Moravian Karst, Czech Republic), 12 algae- and cyanobacteria taxons and 19 moss taxons were detected. The threshold hydrogen peroxide concentration for the destruction of this lamp-flora was found to be 15 vol.%. Ba

Analysis of spider webs from limestone arches in New South Wales, Australia showed levels of lead and zinc to be several times higher at Jenolan Caves than reference sites at Abercrombie and Wombeyan Caves. The high concentrations at Jenolan were attributed to emissions from motor vehicles that travel through the arch. Analysis of water-soluble ions in webs from Jenolan and Abercrombie Caves showed large differences between the sites, which could be explained by differences in the geology and biology of the cave environments. Spider webs proved useful indicators of environmental chemistry and

The Juno spacecraft has been in orbit around Jupiter since 2016. Two flybys of Ganymede were executed in 2021, opportunities realized by evolution of Juno's polar orbit over the intervening 5 years. The geometry of the close flyby just prior to the 34th perijove pass by Jupiter brought the spacecraft inside Ganymede's unique magnetosphere. Juno's payload, designed to study Jupiter's magnetosphere, had ample dynamic range to study Ganymede's magnetosphere. The Juno radio system was used both for gravity measurements and for study of Ganymede's ionosphere. Remote sensing of Ganymede returned new
