BACKGROUND: A geriatric assessment (GA) is recommended before treating older cancer patients. The goal of this study was to investigate if the additional information from a GA and discussion by a multidisciplinary board (MB) change the treatment recommendations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Older cancer patients (n = 421) were prospectively assessed by an oncologist for eligibility for chemotherapy. A multidimensional GA was performed and a discussion about each patient was held by a MB including a geriatrician. Differences between the judgment made by the oncologist, that of the MB, and the Balducc

AIM: Frailty has become an increasingly important topic, being directly correlated with ageing, presence of comorbidities, and also with other factors. It is a state of high vulnerability and is a consequence of ageing-related decline in whole body functioning. In order to initiate preventive and therapeutic measures, we need to identify the characteristics of current frail older adults. To identify the characteristics of frailty depending on age, area of residence and to assess the relationship between frailty and disability, cognitive impairment, malnutrition, depression and comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: The role of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is crucial from a clinical point of view for frail older patients, permitting tailored interventions that may address specific needs. In addition to its clinical significance, understanding the economic value of CGA is also essential. Cost-effectiveness analyses are increasingly conducted to evaluate health interventions, but the literature about CGA is still limited, and no comprehensive overview is currently available. The aim of our study is therefore to systematically review economic evaluations of CGA, including both cost an

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of older people are being treated in German hospitals. In 2022, more than 35.7 million hospitalized patients in Germany were of age 65 or older. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) can help to structure and improve the diagnosis and treatment of these patients, many of whom suffer from multimorbidity.
METHODS: The guideline group developed this guideline in accordance with the AWMF recommendations. Answers to questions were either evidence-based or consensus-based; the latter were established with a Delphi procedure followed by a consensus conference. The

The postoperative outcome of older people is significantly influenced by individual age-related risk factors. Therefore, factors such as frailty, cognitive impairment and functional dependency should be routinely included in the preoperative anesthesiological assessment of older patients. The approach recommended in the catalogue of criteria for geriatric trauma centers of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU®) includes screening to identify geriatric patients, determination of frailty, assessment of cognitive impairment and delirium screening even in the emergency department. In additio

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The proportion of older people is increasing disproportionately. The age between 60 and 65 years is seen as the transition to 'old age'. Frailty is a risk factor for morbidity, mortality, and complications in the context of medical interventions or adverse effects of drug therapies. One of the core components of frailty, the age-related loss of muscle mass, is sarcopenia. Is there an influence of frailty, as well as sarcopenia and some other aspects, i.e. malnutrition, on the outcome in elderly urologic patients?
RECENT FINDINGS: These phenomena of aging correlate with the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Present an approach for surgical decision-making in cancer that incorporates geriatric assessment by building upon the common categories of tumor, technical, and patient factors to enable dual assessment of disease and geriatric factors.
RECENT FINDINGS: Conventional preoperative assessment is insufficient for older adults missing important modifiable deficits, and inaccurately estimating treatment intolerance, complications, functional impairment and disability, and death. Including geriatric-focused assessment into routine perioperative care facilitates improved communica

Mobility and its limitations play an important role in the quality of life of geriatric patients and influence activity and participation. The assessment of mobility is therefore of particular importance for treatment and treatment planning in geriatric patients. There is a variety of assessment tools that cannot be used in every patient group, e.g. due to floor effects. This article provides an overview of common assessment tools and facilitates the evaluation and use of these tools. Special consideration is given to performance-oriented aspects and current technical developments such as wear

BACKGROUND: Older people are more likely to develop nutritional problems and timely diagnosis of malnutrition is crucial to prevent hazardous consequences following poor nutrition.
AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) to assess nutritional status among non-hospitalized elderly, compared to mini nutritional assessment (MNA) among Iranian seniors.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-four subjects, aged ≥ 65 years old were recruited to our cross-sectional study from various districts of Tabriz (Tabriz, Iran). Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were perfo

BACKGROUND: Preventing adverse outcomes in older hospitalized adults requires gerontological and geriatric knowledge, including care approaches tailored to their complex needs. To improve geriatric care standards, it is important to gain knowledge of hospital-employed staff's knowledge about care of older adults and their patterns of care. This study aimed to assess Danish hospital-employed nursing staff's general knowledge about older adults, their clinical geriatric knowledge and their perceptions of the geriatric care environment using the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile (GIAP).

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive malignancy with poor prognosis, particularly in older patients (≥70 years), who represent an increasing proportion of cases. However, this population is underrepresented in clinical trials. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of the Geriatric 8 (G8) screening tool and the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in older patients with advanced PDAC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients aged ≥70 years with locally advanced or metastatic PDAC treated at Fondazione

INTRODUCTION: A growing percentage of the US population is over the age of 65, and geriatrics account for a large portion of trauma admissions, expected to reach nearly 40% by 2050. Cognitive status is important for operative management, especially in elderly populations. This study aims to investigate preoperative and postoperative cognitive function assessment tools in geriatric patients following acute trauma and associated outcomes, including functional status, postdischarge disposition, mortality, and hospital length of stay (H-LOS).
METHODS: A literature search was conducted using Medli

Comprehensive geriatric assessments (CGAs) are considered the cornerstone of modern geriatric medicine. A CGA is a holistic and person-centred process involving the assessment of an older person's health and care needs, formulation of a care plan to address those needs, implementation of the care plan, and regular review of the person's progress. It is designed to help manage complex care needs and improve overall health and well-being. Older people's nurses will inevitably be involved in conducting or coordinating CGAs as part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). • A CGA encompasses six key d

It is only by knowing the most common causes of falls in the hospital that appropriate and targeted fall prevention measures can be implemented. This study aimed to assess the frequency of falls in a hospital geriatrics ward and the circumstances in which they occurred and evaluate the parameters of the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) correlating with falls. We considered medical, functional, and nutritional factors associated with falls and built multivariable logistic regression analysis models. A total of 416 (median age 82 (IQR 77-86) years, 77.4% women) hospitalizations in the ge

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We sought to operationalize some of the items of the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) according to Barthel Index (BI), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) scores among older hospitalized patients in order to optimize the concordance of aforementioned tools. In addition, we assessed comparability and interchangeability of operationalized MNA-SF and standard MNA-SF which have not been performed so far.
METHODS: 358 older participants (250 women) aged ≥60 years who were consecutively admitted at geriatric hospital ward wer

BACKGROUND: Older adults with gastroesophageal cancer (GEC) frequently visit oncology practices, but provider assessments often overlook critical geriatric factors. This study compares the effectiveness of a geriatric assessment (GA) versus routine provider assessment (PA) in evaluating these patients.
METHODS: Patients (≥ 65 years) actively undergoing therapy for GEC completed a GA, while providers conducted a baseline PA. Both assessments identified abnormalities across multiple geriatric domains, including functional status, nutrition, comorbidities, psychological distress, cognition, soci

BACKGROUND: There has been a steady rise in the global population of centenarians. However, information on the factors affecting survival in community-dwelling centenarians remains limited. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), with its multidisciplinary approach, offers important advantages in identifying predictors of mortality in older adults. This research sought to determine the most common chronic diseases and factors associated with mortality in community-dwelling centenarians using the CGA. METHODS: The clinical documentation of community-dwelling individuals aged ≥ 100 years who a
