A comparison of depressive mood of older adults in a community, nursing homes, and a geriatric hospital: factor analysis of Geriatric Depression Scale.

The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)-15 was used in 607 adults aged 65+ years living in a community, nursing homes, and a general hospital to explore characteristics of depressive mood in different care settings. Factor analysis of GDS-15 extracted 4 factors labeled unhappiness, apathy and anxiety, loss of hope and morale, and energy loss. The scale scores labeled unhappiness, apathy and anxiety, and loss of hope and morale were negatively correlated with the Barthel Index and the Mini-Mental State Examination scores. The results classified the depressive patterns into 2 types, one fitting the

The Impact of Emergency Department Geriatric Nurse Practitioners on Patient Length of Stay.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research exists that examines the impact of geriatric-focused nurse practitioners practicing within United States emergency departments on the reduction of inpatient admission length of stay for older patients. This represents a significant gap in the provision of care. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of geriatric-focused nurse practitioners' integration into an emergency department setting and the subsequent effect on the length of stay of inpatient hospital admissions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical records for patients aged ≥65 years

Airborne contact dermatitis to tetrazepam in geriatric nurses--a report of 10 cases.

BACKGROUND: Tetrazepam, a benzodiazepine, is a frequently used muscle relaxant. The most common adverse reactions are neurological and gastrointestinal. Cutaneous reactions to tetrazepam are rare and occur predominantly after systemic administration. OBJECTIVE: To present 10 health care professionals who developed airborne contact dermatitis to tetrazepam due to occupational exposure to tetrazepam dusts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a series of 10 cases observed in our department between January 2006 and March 2011 where tetrazepam was identified to cause allergic airborne contact dermat

An outbreak of multi-resistant Shigella sonnei in a long-stay geriatric nursing centre.

An outbreak of Shigella sonnei infection in a long-stay nursing centre was detected during routine surveillance of notifications in July 1999. Subsequent investigations identified 13 cases of multi-resistant S. sonnei infection affecting nine staff, three community members associated with the centre and one resident of the centre. Each isolate of S. sonnei was genetically indistinguishable. The outbreak investigation identified contact with residents with vomiting and diarrhoea as a significant risk factor for infection amongst staff providing nursing care. This association, and the duration o

Exploring the core competencies of geriatric nursing among township nurses in China: a qualitative study using the iceberg model.

Rural regions of China are facing a more severe population aging problem than urban areas, and the diverse health and care needs of rural older adults bring great challenges to frontline nurses working at township hospitals. At present, a targeted core competency system for township nurses engaged in geriatric nursing has not been systematically constructed in China. This qualitative descriptive study adopted the Iceberg Model as the theoretical framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six nurses and four physicians from nine township hospitals in Jiangsu Province. A total of

Progress of nursing management for delirium in critically ill geriatric patients: a narrative review.

Delirium is the most common and modifiable acute cognitive complication in elderly critically ill patients and is associated with prolonged hospital stays, increased mortality, persistent long-term cognitive decline, and a significant healthcare burden. A history of mild cognitive impairment or dementia further increases delirium risk, exacerbates symptom severity, and worsens clinical outcomes. Nonpharmacological nursing interventions form the cornerstone of delirium prevention and management. However, nurse-centered integrated comprehensive care pathways remain insufficiently integrated. The Urgent Need for Nutritional Medical Care in Geriatric Patients-Malnutrition in Nursing Homes.

Patients aged 65 and over who are accommodated in hospitals and nursing homes are at high risk of malnutrition and often show signs of it. The future relevance of this problem becomes clear, especially in view of the demographic development of the coming years and decades. In this study, the correlation between malnutrition, hypoalbuminemia, anemia, elevated CRP, and low transferrin levels, as well as mortality in seniors between 65 and 100 years, should be revealed. Therefore, the prevalence of disease-specific malnutrition (DRM), according to the criteria of the guidelines of the German Soci

Reducing potentially inappropriate drug prescribing in nursing home residents: effectiveness of a geriatric intervention.

AIMS: Potentially inappropriate drug prescribing (PIDP) is frequent in nursing home (NH) residents. We aimed to investigate whether a geriatric intervention on quality of care reduced PIDP. METHODS: We performed an ancillary study within a multicentric individually-tailored controlled trial (IQUARE trial). All NH received a baseline and 18-month audit regarding drug prescriptions and other quality of care indicators. After the initial audit, NHs of the intervention group benefited of an in-site intervention (geriatric education for NH staff) provided by a geriatrician from the closest hospita

Cutaneous-delayed hypersensitivity in nursing home and geriatric clinic patients. Implications for the tuberculin test.

Cutaneous-delayed hypersensitivity was studied by one and two-step Mantoux-type skin tests to four standard antigens in 33 elderly nursing home residents, 34 geriatric clinic patients, and 20 healthy young adult controls. Demographic and anthropometric data were collected to determine the effects of nutrition and other variables on cutaneous-delayed hypersensitivity. Anergy (a lack of response greater than 5 mm of induration when read at 48 hours) to any of the four antigens occurred in 34% of nursing home residents, 17% of geriatric clinic patients, and none of the healthy young adults. Emergency Nurses' Perspectives on Adopting Geriatric Screenings for Cognitive Impairment: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment in older adults is underrecognized in emergency departments. Despite emergency nurses' central role in facilitating ED screening for clinical and social needs, little is known about their perspectives on implementing delirium and dementia screenings. Nurses can provide insights to promote the uptake of these screenings. METHODS: Using a case study approach, we conducted qualitative interviews with emergency nurses at a public safety net hospital about their perspectives on implementing screening for delirium and dementia. Interview topics were derived from a
