Modified matrix volatilization (MV) method has been described to characterize high purity germanium material of 7 N (99.99999%) purity. Chronic renal failure developed in 5 patients who were taking germanium dioxide (GeO2)-containing compounds. Renal functional deterioration was slow but progressive and dialysis treatment was necessitated temporarily in 2 patients. Germanium and tin monoxides (MO, M = Ge, Sn) were trapped by the 1,2,4-diazaphospholide-based germylene and stannylene M[3,5-tBu2dp]2 (M = Ge (2), Sn (3)), resulting in the Lewis acid-base adduct of composition M(μ-O)[M{η1(N)-(3,5-tBu2dp)}2]2 (M = Ge (4), Sn (5)). Compounds 4 and 5 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis. The bonding features of 4 and 5 were supported by DFT calculations.

An improved matrix separation method has been described to characterize ultrapure germanium of 8N (99.999999%) purity. In this method, temperature of the reaction vessel in which in-situ generated chlorine gas reacts with germanium solid material directly is optimized to quantitatively remove Ge matrix from all its impurities. Optimized reaction temperature has been found to be 230±5°C. Recovery studies on more than 60 elements have been carried out at the optimized temperature. A simple and rapid test has been developed to quantitatively measure the migration of antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products. The PET product was soaked in 4% acetic acid (2 mL/cm2) for 30 min at 60 degrees C and 95 degrees C. The test solution was analyzed by ICP-MS.
