A 75-year-old right-handed woman presented to the emergency department with simultanagnosia and right unilateral optic ataxia. Moreover, the patient had agraphia, acalculia, digital agnosia and right-left disorientation, consistent with complete Gerstmann's syndrome. This case highlights the concurrence of Gerstmann's syndrome and unilateral optic ataxia in the acute phase of a left middle cerebral artery stroke.

Hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome (HHNS) is a complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus that can progress to coma and death if left untreated. Focal hyperglycemic seizures are still an uncommon but noteworthy association of HHNS and most commonly involve the occipital and parietal lobes. Gerstmann syndrome, also called angular gyrus syndrome, consists of a tetrad of finger agnosia, acalculia, left-right disorientation, and agraphia that is usually accompanied by aphasia and most commonly presents in parietal lobe pathology. Here we report a case of a 50-year-old right-handed male w

Gerstmann syndrome is a neurobehavioral syndrome characterized by four cardinal symptoms: acalculia, agraphia, finger-toe agnosia, and dysgraphia. The syndrome is caused primarily by lesions at the confluence of parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, but also can involve the middle frontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere. Documented inciting lesions include stroke, tumor, hemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations, and seizures. A meningeal solitary fibrous tumor (SFT)/hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a diagnostic challenge due to its resemblance to more common brain tumors like meningioma, with his

A 48-year-old female suffered from cerebral infarction involving the left inferior frontal gyrus. This was due to ischemic complications of endovascular treatment for subarachnoid hemorrhage. She exhibited severe acalculia, agraphia, finger agnosia, and right-left disorientation (the four features of Gerstmann syndrome), but aphasia was scarcely noticeable. Single-photon emission tomography revealed hypoperfusion in the left inferior frontal area and also in the left parietal area. It is possible that Gerstmann syndrome was caused in the present case by disruption of the association fiber conn

Prion diseases are now a focus of attention since the diseases are known to disseminate beyond expectation. They are various types of Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome(GSS), fatal familial insomnia, iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease(CJD), and variant CJD which suspected to have disseminated from bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Abnormal prion protein deposits as amyloid structure in the brain of the patients with these diseases. Mutation of the prion protein gene exists in a part of these diseases. Depending on their kind, patients represent a variety of clinical and neuropathologica

UNLABELLED: The Syndrome of Gerstmann-Straussler is a constellation of typical symptoms that affects the parietotemporal crossroad and also involves the contiguous parts of the occipital lobe of the dominant hemisphere. Is a family ailment that starts with an espinocerebellar ataxy followed by dementia. Diagnosis options such as EEG, TC, RM and brain SPECT-99mTc-HMPAO have been carried out in an adult with Gerstmann Syndrome.
RESULTS: The brain SPECT disclosed a disminution of the flow at the parietotemporooccipital areas of both hemispheres. The results revealed a clinical and a neuromorphof

Gerstmann syndrome (GS) is a rare syndrome that occurs when there is a lesion of the dominant inferior parietal lobule (IPL), causing agraphia, acalculia, finger agnosia, and right-left disorientation. A 49-year-old right-handed male was diagnosed as GS after left parieto-occipital lobe hemorrhage. The patient showed mild anomic aphasia with agraphia in the language test and the neuropsychological test revealed acalculia, impaired right-left discrimination, and finger agnosia. In diffusion tensor tractography, the tracts of left superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), middle longitudinal fasci

Deep functional and structural neuroimaging of a series of Gerstmann's syndrome patients required high accuracy, and our results avoided false overlaps of heterogeneous brain lesions by handling each case of our study subjects separately as an individual case regarding functional and neuroimaging tests. Six patients with Gerstmann tetrad (one with dominant acalculia, one with dominant left and right disorientation, two with writing disabilities and two with finger agnosia) and 6 control subjects with close ages were recruited in the current study. In the main phase, we assessed brain activatio

Gerstmann syndrome, characterized by a tetrad of symptoms, which are agraphia, acalculia, left-right disorientation, and finger agnosia, presents challenges in both understanding its pathophysiology and establishing effective treatment modalities. Neuroanatomical studies have highlighted the involvement of the dominant parietal lobe, particularly the inferior parietal lobule, in the development of Gerstmann syndrome. Although current treatment options are largely supportive, recent research suggests a potential role for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in managing this condition. DBS, known for it

Gerstmann syndrome (GS) comprises four interlaced neuropsychological symptoms including finger agnosia, right-left confusion, agraphia, and acalculia. While GS is commonly associated with focal lesions to the region of the left angular gyrus, it has also been associated with numerous diffuse etiologies including atrophy, alcoholism, carbon monoxide poisoning, lead intoxication and anaphylactic shock. Thus, a vigorous debate has emerged as to whether GS represents a syndrome arising from general brain decline or a distinct and localizing lesion. We report a right-handed patient who developed ne

A host protein encoded by the gene specifying the scrapie amyloid precursor affects pathogenesis of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker's syndrome (GSS), and kuru in man, and scrapie in animals. We found a mutation in this gene of two patients with CJD from one family and a second mutation in the same gene in three patients with GSS from another family. The mutation in two related familial CJD patients changed glutamine in position 200 tolysine. This mutation was absent in other individuals including unrelated patients

The symptom complex of finger anomia, right-left disorientation, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia constitutes Gerstmann's syndrome. It is mostly described in adults and is caused by acquired lesions of the dominant parietal lobe. It is infrequently described in children with learning disabilities and has been designated developmental Gerstmann's syndrome. Developmental Gerstmann's syndrome goes unnoticed if not specifically sought by clinicians. A detailed evaluation will reveal subtle neurologic deficits, behavioral problems, and neuropsychologic and specific speech and language abnormalities. Ten

The authors describe the first case in literature of Gerstmann's syndrome (agraphia, acalculia, finger agnosia) occurred in HIV correlated encephalopathy developed as the first severe manifestation of HIV infection in a patient with prevalent white matter neuroradiologic alterations. The PDL rapidly extended from the left subcortical parietal-occipital regions to the pre-rolandic one, with subsequent involvement of the corpus calosum splenium and the bilateral temporal lobes white matter. The authors indicate the extent of the lesions and the involvement of the interhemispheric connection fibr

The objective is to report a patient with Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome caused by a pathogenic PRNP P102L variant harboring an unexpected concomitant pathogenic GRN variant p.R110X and to discuss the potential contribution of combined genetic pathology to the clinical and neuroimaging phenotype confirmed by autopsy. Moreover, we discuss the potential role of TMEM106B as an important modifier of the protein TDP-43 neuropathology associated with the GRN mutation in this case. The patient underwent detailed clinical assessment, serial neuropsychological evaluation, brain MRI, cerebrospi

A 34-year-old man with astrocytoma in the left parietal lobe had symptomatic partial epilepsy, and he presented transient episodes of acalculia, agraphia and finger agnosia. Occasionally he had difficulty in finding appropriate letters when making an e-mail, and difficulty in writing and calculation. Neurological examinations revealed ictal symptoms of Gerstmann's syndrome without right to left disorientation. No other higher cortical dysfunction or neurological deficits were noted. Scalp EEGs showed frequent, regional ictal discharges in the left parietal area lasting for 60-240 seconds. Thes

In the course of epidemiological studies on Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in Poland, the authors found a male patient aged 54 years with dementia rapidly progressing for a year and ataxia of the extremities. EEG tracings were abnormal but without features typical of CJD. About six months after hospitalisation the patient died. Neuropathological examination of his brain demonstrated spongiform lesions of medium intensity present mainly in the cortex of frontal and occipital lobes, with slight proliferation of astroglia. In the cerebellar cortex numerous deposits of PAS-positive substance amorphous

We report a patient who exhibited Gerstmann's syndrome in association with a chronic subdural haematoma. A 71-year-old right-handed woman presented with mild right arm and leg weakness that began 2 weeks prior to admission. Neurological examination on admission revealed a mild right hemiparesis. Neuropsychological examination revealed right-left disorientation, finger agnosia, agraphia, and acalculia, but no language disturbance. A computerized tomographic (CT) scan revealed a large left frontoparietal, extra-axial hypodense fluid collection containing scattered hypodense foci. A left parietal

Cortical blindness is defined as a loss of vision due to bilateral retrogeniculate lesions (geniculocalcarine blindness). Gerstmann's syndrome is a combination of disorientation for left and right, finger agnosia, and profound agraphia, alexia, and acalculia. It is due to a lesion in the left angular gyrus, situated at the confluence of the temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes. We report on a patient who suffered from severe underdiagnosed eclampsia and who developed bilateral extensive medial temporal, parietal, and calcarine ischemic infarctions during an eclamptic fit. In addition, ische
