The morphological study of Giant Cell Tumors of Bone collected at the Orthopaedic Department of C.H.U. Cochin, with high resolution radiography of macroscopical samples added to topographical cytology allows to report the following facts: --Mononuclear cells have cytonuclear criteria between histiocyte and fibroblast cells, quite apart from Chondroblastoma and Chondromyxoid fibroma. Cytological transitions are observed between mononuclear and giant cells. --Osteoid formation is usually connected with the lysis or the blow-up of the neighbouring cortex. Without secondary changes, collagenisatio

A case of a giant cell tumor of the right proximal femur that developed malignant change following surgical treatment ("secondary" malignant giant cell tumor) is presented. The patient had a cystic lesion that was initially interpreted as an aneurysmal bone cyst. A local recurrence six months later demonstrated the histological features of typical giant cell tumor. A further recurrence 22 months after the original treatment showed histological malignancy. Death was due to massive local recurrence and to extension of the malignancy to the pleura.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCT-TS) is a benign, slow-growing lesion originating from the tendon sheath or adjacent bursal tissue. We present a series of four histologically confirmed cases with atypical presentations in the foot and hand. Clinical features included a slow-growing, painless mass, often associated with prior trauma. All patients underwent surgical excision, with histopathology confirming GCT-TS. This report emphasizes the importance of considering GCT-TS in the differential diagnosis of soft-tissue swellings in tendon-rich areas and highlights the role of surgery as

In this report, the authors describe a child presenting at 6 months old with a rapidly expanding extracranial left temporal mass concerning for malignancy. The mass was successfully treated at 16 months with radical surgical excision. The patient was found to have a tenosynovial giant cell tumor, diffuse type, completely encased by the temporalis muscle. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of diffuse type tenosynovial giant cell tumor in the temporalis muscle, without articular involvement, presenting in an infant.

Giant cell tumor of the larynx is a rare tumor. It was first reported by Wessely et al in 1940. Thirty-nine cases have been reported until now and together with the current case 2 recurrences were encountered. In this case report, our aim was to discuss conservative management because of the suspicion of recurrence. A 70-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of hoarseness. A tumor measuring 1 × 1 cm located in the anterior half right vocal fold and extending to the anterior comissure was found on laryngeal endoscopy. Direct laryngoscopy and biopsy of the mass reve

Giant cell tumor of soft tissue is a rare tumor first described by Salm and Sissons in 1972 as being a distinct entity.(1) Histologically, it is composed of multinucleated giant cells dispersed among mononuclear cells, and is indistinguishable from its bone equivalent.(2) The majority of these tumors have been reported to occur in the lower extremity.(2,3) We describe a case of giant cell tumor of soft tissue within the posterior mediastinum. The only other report of a primary mediastinal giant cell tumor of soft tissue in the English literature was published by Fu et al. in 2002, in which the

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Giant cell tumor of the sphenoid bone is extremely unusual. This tumor is usually located in long bones and is rarely located in the cranial vault. It must be differentiated from reparative granuloma and the Brown tumor of hyperparathyroidism. This case report is only the second involving a patient in the first decade.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old girl presented with cephalgia and diplopia. Radiographic imaging revealed an erosive mass in the clivus.
INTERVENTION: The patient underwent an extended transphenoidal resection of the clivus. This was followed with

The scintigraphic appearance of giant cell tumor of bone in six patients is presented. Patients were studied by means of Tc-99m MDP bone scanning. On early blood pool and delayed imaging, markedly increased activity was noted, characteristically displaying a "ring" pattern that is readily discernible from patterns seen in bone cysts and nonosteogenic fibroma. The extent of the lesion, as judged by scintigraphic techniques, was roughly equal to estimates of extent by other radiographic modalities. Only one example of a different lesion mimicking giant cell tumor was encountered in over 100 case

Giant cell tumors of bone (GCTs) are rare mesenchymal tumors classified as intermediate in the WHO 2020 classification, i.e. neither completely benign nor definitely malignant, due to recurrence (frequent) and pulmonary metastases (rare). They involve the end of long bones as well as the axial bones of mature skeletons. They are made of mononuclear stromal tumor cells of (pre-) osteoblastic phenotype, mononuclear cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage and osteoclast-like multinuclear giant cells responsible for tumor osteolysis. In 95% of cases, the stromal cells have a specific mutation in

Giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytoma or giant cell tumor of the soft parts (GCTSP) is a rare soft tissue tumor. GCTSP has an unpredictable behavior; the majority of the reported cases showed benign histology and those that showed malignant morphologic features were extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, GCTSP has never been reported to involve the vulva in the English literature. We report the first case of malignant GCTSP of the vulva. Histologic features and the immunoprofile of the tumor and differential diagnosis are discussed in detail. Although extremely rare, consideration o

A 55-year-old lady presented with a large skin colored growth on her vulva since the age of 15 years, which gradually increased to the present state, with the development of a new lesion on her left thigh. There were no systemic symptoms. Biopsy followed by immunohistochemistry showed features consistent with a granular cell tumor.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign but locally aggressive and destructive lesion generally occurring in skeletally mature individuals. Typically involving the epiphysiometaphyseal region of long bones, the most common sites include the distal femur, proximal tibia and distal radius. On radiographs, GCT demonstrates a lytic lesion centered in the epiphysis but involving the metaphysis and extending at least in part to the adjacent articular cortex. Most are eccentric, but become symmetric and centrally located with growth. Most cases show circumscribed borders or so-called geographical

We describe a patient with a giant cell tumor in the talar head and neck of the left foot who was diagnosed as having osteochondritis dissecans and treated with arthroscopic drilling in this same location 3 years earlier. Giant cell tumors can be confused with several conditions, including giant cell reparative granulomas, brown tumors, and aneurysmal bone cysts. Giant cell tumors of bone typically occur in the epiphysis of long bones, including the distal femur and proximal tibia. They are uncommonly found in the small bones of the foot or ankle, and talar involvement is rare. Despite this ra

Malignant giant cell tumors (MGCTs) of the sphenoid sinus are extremely rare neoplasms. They are challenging to diagnose and difficult to treat because of their skull base location. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of a primary MGCT of the sphenoid arising in a patient with Paget's disease. A 77-year-old man presented with epistaxis and a history of Paget's disease. There was normal cranial nerve function although radiographic images disclosed a large mass centered in the sphenoid sinus and extending into the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Excisional biopsy revealed a MGC

The giant cell tumors usually present in epiphysis of long bones. These are uncommon tumors in head and neck region. These tumors have benign historical features but can be aggressive locally and even can metastasise to lungs. This rare tumor in hard palate is being reported here which was excised transpalatly.

Giant cell tumor of bone accounts for 4% to 5% of primary bone tumors in the United States. Multicentric giant cell tumors occur in < 1% of all patients with giant cell tumors, and only 43 patients with multicentric giant cell tumor have been reported on in the literature. This series presents 3 additional cases of multicentric giant cell tumor, includes updated data for 2 patients previously reported on in the literature, and reviews 24 cases previously reported on in detail in the literature. The mechanism by which giant cell tumor involves multiple locations is not known. Multicentric giant

The authors report 23 cases of giant cell tumor (GCT) of the mobile spine, treated between 1975 and 1993, with mean follow-up of 9 years. The series was homogeneous in terms of diagnosis, staging, and treatment, carried out at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, and isolated from a series of 28 cases recorded at the Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Institute. Five of the cases were excluded either because of insufficient documentation (4), or because the tumor had occurred on Paget's disease (1). GCT of the spine is a rare disease, and has a favorable diagnosis if treatment is correct, consisting in

The radiological appearance of giant cell tumors (GCT) in the developing skeleton was retrospectively assessed in 49 (10.6%) of the 462 patients with GCTs seen in consultation by the Netherlands Committee on Bone Tumors. There were 31 female and 18 male patients, all below 19 years of age. Thirty-four tumors were located in short and long tubular bones, two in the tarsus, while the others were in the pelvis, vertebral spine, and a rib. Involvement of the epiphysis in tubular bones was closely related to the age of the patient: the average age of the 3 patients with a lesion in the metaphysis w

The authors present two cases of giant cell tumor of the hamate bone. The symptoms and signs were similar in both cases: pain, mild inflammatory changes, and localized swelling. The radiographic picture included lacunar osteolysis with interruption of the cortex in one case, intact cortex but more expansive lysis of the cancellous bone in the other. The findings of greatest interest were constituted by the extreme rareness of the localization, problems related to differential diagnosis, long-term follow-up in one case (20 years) and the different methods of treatment used.
