High risk human papillomavirus in the periodontium : A case control study.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) are small DNA viruses that have been identified in periodontal pocket as well as gingival sulcus. High risk HPVs are also associated with a subset of head and neck carcinomas. It is thought that the periodontium could be a reservoir for HPV. AIMS: 1. Detection of Human Papilloma virus (HPV) in periodontal pocket as well as gingival of patients having localized chronic periodontitis and gingival sulcus of periodontally healthy subjects. 2. Quantitative estimation of E6 and E7 mRNA in subjects showing presence of HPV3. To assess whether periodontal poc

Real-time polymerase chain reaction quantification of human cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus in periodontal pockets and the adjacent gingiva of periodontitis lesions.

BACKGROUND: Genomic sequences of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), two herpesviruses, can frequently be detected in periodontal pockets of progressive periodontitis lesions, but the prevalence and load of the two viruses in gingival tissue are unknown. This study determined levels of HCMV and EBV DNA in the periodontal pocket and in the adjacent gingiva of periodontitis lesions using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 20 systemically healthy periodontitis patients participated in the study. Nine patients below 35 years

High-resolution ultrasonography of gingival biomarkers for periodontal diagnosis in healthy and diseased subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the capacity of ultrasonographic image-based measurements of gingival height and alveolar bone level for monitoring periodontal health and disease. METHODS: Sixteen subjects were recruited from patients scheduled to receive dental care and classified as periodontally healthy (n = 10) or diseased (n = 6) according to clinical guidelines. A 40-MHz ultrasound system was used to measure gingival recession, gingival height, alveolar bone level, and gingival thickness from 66 teeth for comparison to probing measurements of pocket depth and clinical attachment level. Open flap debridement in combination with acellular dermal matrix allograft for the prevention of postsurgical gingival recession: a case series.

Open flap debridement with flap repositioning may result in significant gingival recession. Patients with chronic periodontitis were treated with open flap debridement followed by placement of an acellular dermal matrix allograft (ADMA) underneath the flap to minimize the occurrence of postsurgical gingival recession. Ten patients (total, 60 teeth) with periodontal pockets in the anterior dentition underwent open flap debridement combined with ADMA. Probing pocket depth, relative attachment level, and relative gingival margin level were recorded at baseline and 6 months postsurgery. The mean p

Clinical evaluation of topical application of perio-Q gel (Coenzyme Q(10)) in chronic periodontitis patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coenzyme Q(10) is a well studied antioxidant in medical literature, but studies regarding its efficacy in periodontal diseases are few. Hence, the aim of this study was to test the efficacy of coenzyme Q(10) in the form of gel (Perio-Q) in patients with chronic gingivitis and periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12 patients were enrolled. A split mouth design was used for topical (extrasulcular) application, intra-pocket application alone, intra-pocket application combined with scaling and root planing (SRP) and SRP only in each quadrant, respectively. Maintenance of healed periodontal pockets after a single episode of root planing.

The present study evaluated the clinical stability of healed periodontal pockets over a 3 month time period to determine whether this time interval is appropriate for periodontal maintenance therapy. The clinical characteristics of 128 pockets (3-7 mm depth) distributed in 10 patients, were monitored immediately before and 4, 8 and 16 weeks after a single episode of subgingival root planing. The clinical parameters measured were: pocket depth and bleeding after probing with 15, 25 and 50 gm and manual probing, gingival margin location, clinical attachment level, and gingival and plaque indices

Cigarette smoking, oral hygiene and periodontal health in Swedish army conscripts.

Possible dissimilarities between smokers and nonsmokers regarding oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontal pocketing and alveolar bone loss were studied in a sample of 134 army conscripts. Compared to nonsmokers, smokers had a higher plaque index and greater severity of gingivitis, while no differences were found concerning pocket depth and bone loss. It could be demonstrated that the difference regarding gingivitis disappeared when a check was made for plaque values. It still remains to be explained why plaque deposition is more pronounced in smokers.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin in Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy: A Split-Mouth Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

This clinical trial investigated the efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as an adjunct to conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) in non-surgical periodontal therapy. In a split-mouth randomized controlled trial with 13 patients and 26 periodontal pocket sites, PRF was inserted in test group pockets alongside SRP, while control group pockets received SRP alone. Measurements at baseline and six weeks included probing pocket depths (PPDs), clinical attachment loss (CAL), gingival recession (GR), the plaque index, and the gingivitis index. The wound healing index was assessed at six weeks.

Successful Management of Generalized Drug-Influenced Gingival Enlargement: A Clinical Case Report.

Drug-influenced gingival enlargement (DIGE) is a clinically significant adverse effect of medications such as phenytoin and may be exacerbated by plaque-induced inflammation. The interaction between drug-related alterations in gingival connective-tissue metabolism and local inflammatory factors can result in marked gingival enlargement, compromising oral hygiene and periodontal health. We present a case of a 40-year-old man with a long history of phenytoin use who developed generalized, bulbous, and fibrotic gingival enlargement associated with periodontal pocketing. The management of DIGE inc

The in vivo expression of membrane-bound CD14 in periodontal health and disease.

BACKGROUND: Membrane-bound CD14 (mCD14) is a myeloid differentiation antigen expressed on monocytes/macrophages and neutrophils. It is a key molecule responsible for the innate recognition of bacteria by host cells and functions as an important receptor for bacterial lipopolysaccharide. This study investigated the in vivo expression profile and levels of mCD14 in healthy and diseased gingival tissues. METHODS: Gingival biopsies were obtained from 24 patients with chronic periodontitis, including 22 periodontal pocket tissues, 13 clinically healthy tissues, and 18 inflamed connective tissues (
