Morphology of glenoid fossa might help the clinician in the diagnosis, establishing more biological treatment modalities and treatment response between patients with different skeletal malocclusions. This study aimed to assess the glenoid fossa morphology in different sagittal facial types using CBCT. The CBCT images of 64 patients with normal vertical growth patterns were classified into class I, class II, and class III based on the skeletal sagittal analysis. Depth, width, and angle of glenoid fossa were measured and assessed on CBCT images. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey pos

CASE: We previously described a 3D planned, corrective osteotomy of acromion and glenoid which restored normal scapular anatomy in a 40-year-old patient suffering from pain and mild glenohumeral osteoarthritis associated with static posterior shoulder subluxation. Recentering of the joint and pain-free, full shoulder function as documented at 24 months persisted at 5 years, without any evidence of progression of osteoarthritis.
CONCLUSION: Normalizing the malformations of acromion and glenoid typically associated with posterior shoulder subluxation can revert static subluxation and at least h

»: Fractures of the growing scapula account for about 0.1% of all pediatric fractures, with the majority occurring at an age of ≥10 years.
»: Radiographic diagnosis requires a detailed knowledge of the ossification sequence of the growing scapula. Computed tomography examination is indicated for displaced fractures of the glenoid fossa, the scapular neck, and complex fractures; magnetic resonance imaging should be performed in cases of suspected injury to the physis and with stress fractures, depending on patient age and the potential need for general anesthesia during the scanning process.

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is commonly used to treat patients with rotator cuff tear arthropathy. Loosening of the glenoid component remains one of the principal modes of failure and represents a significant complication that requires revision surgery. This study assessed the effects of various factors on glenoid baseplate micromotion for primary fixation of RSA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A half-fractional factorial design of experiment was used to assess 4 factors: central element type (central peg or screw), central cortical engagement according to length (13.5 or 23.5 mm)

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of internal derangements and degenerative bone changes on the minimum thickness of the roof of the glenoid fossa (RGF).
METHODS: MRI and cone beam CT records of temporomandibular joints (TMJ) of 68 patients were evaluated retrospectively in this study. The joints were divided into three groups according to TMJ disc status which had been diagnosed in MRI: normal disc status, anterior disc displacement with reduction, and anterior disc displacement without reduction. Cone beam CT was used to evaluate the degenerative bone changes of

OBJECTIVE: To identify a fluoroscopic bony landmark for safe percutaneous axillary artery cannulation.
BACKGROUND: No bony landmarks exist to guide safe percutaneous axillary artery cannulation, which is an important alternate access site for catheter-based procedures in selected patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 51 consecutive percutaneous axillary artery sheath angiograms and attempted to correlate a fixed bony landmark to the proximal end of the third part of the artery. Proximal to this site, no cords of the brachial plexus traverse the anterior aspect of the vessel. Moreove

Evaluation of a right ventral scapula fragment from a mature Homotherium latidens from Schöningen, Germany (337-300 ka before present - MIS 9) revealed lesions consisting of an osteophyte at the caudal border of the glenoid cavity, and a large, multilobular, cystic feature in the medio-caudal glenoid cavity. Based on the type of lesions, their localization, their severity, and exclusion of several nutritional and other etiologies such as immune mediated disease, joint infection (septic arthritis), and joint tumors, we conclude that the lesion was caused by trauma or age-related shoulder osteoa

The structure and attachment of the glenoid labrum were examined from the functional point of view in 42 shoulder-joint cavities using a combination of macroscopic and microscopic techniques. The labrum continues the long tendon of the biceps as far as the ventral glenoid notch and is supplemented by a connecting band between the superior and inferior glenohumeral ligaments. In the upper quadrants, the periarticular fibers are broadly attached to the neck of the scapula and separated by a gap from the articular cartilage. In the lower quadrants, they are attached to both the neck of the scapul

After mobilizing anteroinferior osseous Bankart lesion from the glenoid neck, a suture anchor loaded with differently colored non-absorbable braided sutures is placed on the medial edge in the glenoid neck along the rim fracture through the anterior-inferior trans-subscapularis tendon portal. Two same-colored suture limbs on the anchor are then pulled through the labrum using PDS suture shuttling simultaneously. These steps are repeated for the others suture limbs. The two same-color suture limbs located inferiorly are retrieved using the trans-subscapularis tendon portal. Both suture strands

Glenoid bone loss is a recognized risk for recurrent instability. Open J-graft augmentation has been reported as a well-established procedure for anterior shoulder instability. Few data are available on arthroscopic techniques for the repair of bony Bankart lesions. We describe an all-arthroscopic implant-free iliac crest bone grafting technique and present the case of a 32-year-old hockey player who underwent glenoid reconstruction using this novel arthroscopic repair technique after 2 failed soft-tissue procedures. After 13 months, the patient reached nearly full range of motion with a sligh

BACKGROUND: The Latarjet and other bony augmentation procedures are commonly used to treat anterior shoulder instability in the setting of significant glenoid bone loss. Although several fixation strategies have been reported, the biomechanical strength of these techniques remains poorly understood.
PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review of the biomechanical strength of glenoid bony augmentation procedures for anterior shoulder instability.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: A systematic search of the Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databa

In the young, active patient with osteoarthritis, the optimal treatment of B2 glenoid morphology remains a subject of continued debate. Current treatment options have specific advantages and disadvantages. These treatments include hemiarthroplasty with or without glenoid reaming, total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) with or without eccentric reaming, TSA with bone graft or posteriorly augmented glenoid implant, and reverse TSA. Eccentric glenoid reaming can be effective but has the risk of excessive reaming of subchondral bone for greater retroversion deformities, compromising implant purchase wi

Total joint reconstruction (TJR) has become the most preferred method of reconstruction in recent years for hemifacial microsomia (HFM). This requires meticulous planning for the glenoid fossa and ramus prosthesis along with the arch in certain indications. TJR in a type V HFM is extremely challenging due to agenesis/hypolasia of the zygoma and arch which compromises anchorage of the glenoid prosthesis. Conventional options used for such indications incorporate extended designs for the fossa. However, the two designs used commonly are associated with limitations; (i) the temporal extension is

Glenoid deformity has an important effect on outcomes and complication rates after shoulder arthroplasty for primary glenohumeral arthritis. The B2/B3 glenoid has particularly been associated with a poorer outcome with shoulder arthroplasty compared with other glenoid types. One of the primary challenges is striking a balance between deformity correction and joint line preservation. Recently, there has been a proliferation of both anatomic and reverse implants that may be used to address glenoid deformity. The purpose of this review was to provide an evidence-based approach for addressing glen

BACKGROUND: Although posterior glenohumeral instability is becoming an increasingly recognized cause of shoulder pain, the role of posterior glenoid bone loss on outcomes remains incompletely understood.
PURPOSES: To prospectively determine the amount of bone loss associated with posterior instability events and to determine predisposing factors based on preinstability imaging.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A total of 1428 shoulders were evaluated prospectively for ≥4 years. At baseline, a subjective history of shoulder instability was ascertained for e

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment of shoulder instability caused by anterior glenoid bone loss is based on a critical threshold of the defect size. Recent studies indicate that the glenoid concavity is essential for glenohumeral stability. However, biomechanical proof of this principle is lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether glenoid concavity allows a more precise assessment of glenohumeral stability than the defect size alone.
METHODS: The stability ratio (SR) is a biomechanical estimate of glenohumeral stability. It is defined as the maximum dislocating force the joint can resis

Glenoid fractures are unique in which they span the fields of orthopaedic traumatology and sports medicine. Treatment of glenoid fractures, whether surgical or nonsurgical, may be challenging and have long-term implications on pain and shoulder function. Plain radiographs are always indicated, and most glenoid fractures will require advanced imaging in the form of CT scan. Two general categories of glenoid fractures exist and differ in mechanism of injury, fracture morphology, and treatment. The first category is glenoid fractures with extension into the scapular neck and body. These fractures

Glenohumeral arthritis in the young adult is a particularly challenging condition for which optimal treatment algorithms have yet to be established. Arthroscopic joint-preserving treatments have the advantage of delaying arthroplasty in this younger population while maintaining the patient's natural anatomy and do not appear to compromise later arthroplasty. Various surgical techniques are available such that the overall procedure is tailored to the patient's individual pathology. Most short- and mid-term studies show good outcomes with low conversion to total shoulder arthroplasty and sustain

An impingement occurring between the deep side of the supraspinatus tendon and the postero-superior edge of the glenoid cavity was evidenced in a young sports thrower presenting with a partial tear of the deep side of the tendon. This impingement occurred when the arm was in abduction-retropulsion and in forced lateral rotation. It was visualized on arthroscopy. The semiology was mixed, including signs of anterior instability and cuff impairment. The possible causes of partial tears of the deep side of the supraspinatus are discussed: sub-acromial impingement of NEER, anterior instability with
