Abstract A partial glossectomy can affect speech production. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the presence of a tumour as well as the glossectomy surgery on the patients' production of tongue twisters with the sounds [t] and [k]. Fifteen patients with tongue cancer and 10 healthy controls took part in the study. The outcome measures were the patients' speech acceptability, rate of errors, the time needed to produce the tongue twisters, pause duration between item repetitions and the tongue shape during the production of the consonants [t] and [k] before and after surgery

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to characterize four clinically distinct glossectomy defects to establish significant quantitative cut points using functional metrics, the MD Anderson Dysphagia Index (MDADI) and speech intelligibility.
METHODS: Population included 101 patients treated with surgery, adjuvant radiation per NCCN guidelines, and ≥ 12 months follow-up.
RESULTS: Defect groups: subtotal hemiglossectomy (1), hemiglossectomy (2), extended hemiglossectomy (3) and oral glossectomy (4) were compared: All outcomes supported a four defect model. Intergroup comparison of outcomes with subtotal hem

Subtotal or total glossectomy for advanced tongue cancer has an adverse impact on swallowing. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyse postoperative swallowing outcomes and to determine the ideal reconstruction method in these patients. The clinical and swallowing data of patients with tongue cancer who underwent subtotal glossectomy at the study institution between 2005 and 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Data were available for 101 patients. The most common reconstruction method was a free rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap (69 cases). The postoperative feeding tube dep

Tongue-palate contact is necessary for the production of normal speech, and the proper location of the tongue on the palate during certain sounds is important. Partial glossectomy leads to difficulty in tongue-palate articulation during speech, and it becomes difficult for a patient to reach the palate with the tongue to form certain sounds. In-depth knowledge of the production of different sounds can be used as a diagnostic aid in determining the thickness of the palatal augmentation prosthesis fabricated to rehabilitate such patients. A functional wax technique is used to make a functional i

UNLABELLED: Disordered speech is common following treatment for tongue cancer, however there is insufficient high quality evidence to guide clinical decision making about treatment. This study investigated use of ultrasound tongue imaging as a visual feedback tool to guide tongue placement during articulation therapy with two participants following partial glossectomy. A Phase I multiple baseline design across behaviors was used to investigate therapeutic effect of ultrasound visual feedback during speech rehabilitation. Percent consonants correct and speech intelligibility at sentence level w

Oral cancer accounts for about 40% of all cancers inflicting the human beings. Those involving the tongue results in mild to severe deficiencies of phonation, deglutition, mastication, and taste depending upon the degree and extent tissues involved. Often rehabilitation of such patient is a challenge for the prosthodontist and involves a careful observation and evaluation of the residual oral function and ways to restore them. This article presents a case report of prosthodontic rehabilitation completely edentulous patient, who underwent partial glossectomy following surgical resection of the

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is caused by narrowing of the pharyngeal airway and loss of dilator tone during sleep. In patients with severe apnea surgical correction often requires attention to both the oropharynx and hypopharynx. Tongue reduction surgery has been described for persistent apnea after failure of palatal surgery. We describe our experience with midline glossectomy with epiglottidectomy in 12 patients with a mean age of 48.8 +/- 14.2 years and body mass index of 36.0 +/- 8.8 kg/m2. Response to treatment was defined as a postoperative respiratory disturbance index (RDI) below

The macroglossia is a rare condition, congenital or acquired, characterized by hypertrophy of the lingual muscles that can cause both aesthetic and functional changes such as mandibular prognathism and malocclusion. Diagnosis is through clinical examination. Treatment consists of excision of part of the tongue and different surgical techniques have been described in the literature. The keyhole lingual resection technique has shown satisfactory results in reducing the volume and preservation of the neurovascular bundles of the tongue. This work aims to present a clinical report of true macroglo

Tongue surgery is almost always complicated by intraoperative bleeding. Its rich blood supply especially from the lingual vessels makes the operative field bloody. Electrocautery has been widely used to replace cold scissors in order to achieve better hemostasis. The use of ultrasonic harmonic scalpel for glossectomy is still new in this country. We report a case of partial glossectomy using the harmonic scalpel in a patient who had a squamous cell carcinoma of the lateral border of the tongue.

Macroglossia, or enlarged tongue, is thought to be an etiological factor in open bite, bimaxillary protrusion, and dental arch spacing, and it might cause instability after orthodontic treatment. Partial glossectomy to reduce tongue size might be a useful method of solving these problems. In this report, we describe orthodontic treatment of 2 siblings with enlarged tongues and arch-space problems. The sister, whose tongue was larger and spacing problem more severe, was treated with a partial glossectomy; her brother refused surgery and was treated with a tongue-crib appliance. Stability after

PURPOSE: The aims of this article were to determine the effects of hard palate morphology and glossectomy surgery on tongue position and shape during /s/ for patients with small tumors. The first expectation was that laminal /s/ would be more prevalent in patients, than apical, due to reduced tongue tip control after surgery. The second was that patients would hold the tongue more anteriorly than controls to compensate for reduced tongue mass.
METHOD: Three-dimensional tongue volumes were calculated from magnetic resonance imaging for the whole tongue and the portion anterior to the first mol
