No Link Between Inadvertent Surgical Glove Contamination and Surgical Site Infection in Patients Undergoing Elective Neurosurgical Operations.

INTRODUCTION: Controllable factors associated with surgical site infections (SSIs) have focused on reducing contamination of the surgical field with potential pathogens. The aim of this prospective study is to determine the incidence of glove contamination in a series of elective neurosurgical operations and determine the relationship of such glove contamination to subsequent SSI. We hypothesize that contamination of surgical gloves is associated with subsequent SSI. METHODS: In this prospective quality improvement study, gloves of the surgical team were swabbed for standard culture just prio

Temporal Effects on Intra-operative Bacterial Contamination of Surgical Gloves in Non-Infection Orthopaedic Trauma Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most serious complications in Orthopaedic trauma surgery, contributing to patient morbidity, mortality, and substantial financial costs. With direct inoculation from intra-operative bacterial contamination being a large contributor to these infections, the temporal dynamics of intra-operative bacterial colonization on surgical gloves in Orthopaedic trauma cases was investigated. METHODS: Surgical glove bacterial cultures were taken by firmly pressing the operating room staff members gloved fingertips onto a sheep's blood agar plate.

Hand Scrubbing and Donning of Sterile Surgical Gloves: An Observational Clinical Audit of Novice Dental Surgeons.

Background The most critical factors in the satisfactory recovery of a patient post-surgery are obedience to sterilization and aseptic protocol. Using aseptic principles, the standard hand scrubbing and gloving procedure prevents contamination of the surgical site and aids in infection control.  Methods Eighty dental interns were observed during minor oral surgical procedures for hand scrubbing and donning sterile surgical gloves, following the steps and guidelines provided by World Health Organization (WHO). The dental interns were evaluated, and in order to enhance their understanding of han

Knot tying in arthroplasty and arthroscopy causes lesions to surgical gloves: a potential risk of infection.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have shown that the incidence of glove lesions during arthroscopy is much lower than that during primary and revision arthroplasty. However, the rate of glove damage after knot tying has not yet been systematically recorded. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the impact of surgical knot tying on glove integrity. It was hypothesized that knot tying increases the rate of glove damage, especially in arthroscopic surgery, which could be of special relevance in the treatment of rotator cuff tears. METHODS: Gloves that were changed immediately before suturing a

Assessement of peritoneal adhesions due to starch granules of surgical glove powder an experimental study.

Introduction of foreign material into abdominal cavity during surgery causes irritation of peritoneum leading to postoperative (PO) adhesions. To assess and prevent PO adhesions, an experimental study was done to assess the caused by starch granules of the surgical glove powder and to avoid complications using the effect of normal saline and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Thirty Wister Albino male rats were subjected to laparotomy and ileocaecal abrasions were done mechanically to induce postoperative peritoneal adhesions. Rats were divided into 3 groups, 10 animals each. The sterile sta

Frequency of glove perforations and subsequent blood contact in association with selected obstetric surgical procedures.

OBJECTIVE: One purpose of this prospective investigation was to assess the frequency of glove perforations and subsequent blood contact associated with selected obstetric procedures. The second purpose was to assess the relative risk of perforation among different members of the surgical team and determine if time of day or urgency of the procedure affected the frequency of perforation. STUDY DESIGN: Over a 3-month period, obstetric personnel were asked to double glove for all surgical procedures. After surgery, they placed their gloves in plastic bags and noted the type of procedure, time of

Application of surgical gloves in cervical and scapular skin grafting surgery: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Securing and protecting the transplanted skin grafts in the cervical and scapular regions posttransplantation is challenging. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 42-year-old male was admitted for the treatment of burns in the neck and scapular regions. Due to the large size of the burn wounds in these areas, combined with the fact that a tracheostomy and intubation had already been performed, securing the skin grafts was challenging. During the first surgery, a tie-over dressing fixation method was used, but the survival rate of the transplanted skin was suboptimal. DIAGNOSES: The patient was dia

Permeation of 70% isopropyl alcohol through surgical gloves: comparison of the standard methods ASTM F739 and EN 374.

Standard test methods ASTM F739 and EN 374 were compared by assessing the permeation of 70% isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) through seven brands of surgical gloves. The two standards differ in the flow rates of the collection medium and in the chemical permeation rate at which the breakthrough time (BTT) is detected, the EN detection level being 10 times higher than the permeation rate used by ASTM. In a departure from the EN standard method, a 4 h testing time was used instead of 8 h. All of the tested gloves were from the same manufacturer and were made from either natural rubber (NR) (six br

Postprocedural infection rate after minor surgical procedures performed with and without sterile gloves: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Postprocedural infection has been a top priority for the perioperative team. The use of sterile gloves to counter this became popular and was routinely used, but randomized studies have shown that the benefit that was thought to be added by the use of sterile gloves is insignificant and that not all procedures require the use of sterile gloves. METHODS: Prospective protocol registration was and electronic databases were searched without using any search filters. Screening was performed by independent reviewers, and data was extracted from selected studies. Heterogeneity was asse

[Electron microscopic analysis of particles from surgical gloves and their possible introduction into the epidural space during epidural anesthesia].

OBJECTIVE: Many publications have linked surgical glove powder to inflammatory reactions of the peritoneum, pleura, pericardium and meninges. Accidental contamination may also increase the likelihood of complications after spinal and epidural anesthesia. We aimed to analyze the morphological characteristics of microscopic particles adhering to surgical gloves and to analyze how likely such particles are to enter the epidural space during catheterization. MATERIAL AND METHOD: One hundred epidural catheters were studied in two groups (A and B) of 50. Group A catheters contained stylettes and th

Compression therapy using surgical gloves is ineffective for the prevention of vincristine-induced neuropathy in patients with malignant lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Vincristine (VCR) often induces peripheral neuropathy (PN) as an adverse event. Currently, there is no consensus on the prevention of vincristine-induced PN (VIPN). In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of compression therapy using surgical gloves for preventing VIPN. METHODS: Patients with malignant lymphoma (vincristine-naïve) who were receiving chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, VCR, and prednisolone, with or without rituximab, every 3 weeks for six cycles were eligible. For every VCR infusion, each patient wore two one-size-smaller gloves on one hand (
