Ascorbate-Promoted Whole-Cell Biocatalysis for Lithium Bio-Recovery from Spent LiFePO4 Cathodes.

The sustainable recycling of spent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries via bioleaching is critically important yet often constrained by low processing capacity and severe microbial oxidative stress. Herein, we report a highly efficient biocatalytic strategy utilizing Gluconobacter oxydans as a whole-cell biocatalyst for the leaching of spent LFP batteries. We demonstrate that the addition of 25 mM ascorbic acid (AA) dramatically enhances the catalytic performance of this microbial system, achieving a high lithium extraction yield of 92.7% within 7 days at a pulp density of 10.0 g L-1. Unraveling the multiple interactions between phages, microbes and flavor in the fermentation of strong-flavor Baijiu.

The fermentation process of strong-flavor Baijiu represents a complex and unique ecosystem, characterized by the involvement of various microorganisms that drive intricate biochemical reactions, ultimately contributing to the distinct flavor profile of the Baijiu. Viruses may affect the succession of microorganisms and thus affect the style and quality of the product. However, the interaction between viruses and microorganisms during the fermentation of Baijiu is still unclear. Here we combined viral metagenomics and amplicon sequencing, physicochemical analysis, and GC-MS detection with tempo

Comparative analysis of grape berry microbiota uncovers sour rot associates from a Maryland vineyard.

Grape sour rot (GSR) is a disease complex involving fungi and bacteria that can cause significant yield losses of susceptible varieties. It is widely spread in the eastern U.S. and other grape-growing regions globally. Previous studies suggest that damaged fruit skin and feeding insects like Drosophila spp. are required for the disease to occur. Current control strategies for the management of sour rot are not sustainable, and research on the implications of chemical management of the disease on microbiome diversity is scarce. Our aim was to: i) investigate the effect of insecticide applicatio

Potential of Microorganisms to Decrease the "Beany" Off-Flavor: A Review.

Vegetable proteins are in high demand due to current issues surrounding meat consumption and changes in eating habits, but they are still not accepted by consumers due to their strong bitterness, astringent taste, and "beany" off-flavor. This review aimed to give an overview of the "beany" off-flavor and the potential of microorganisms to decrease it. Twenty-six volatile compounds were identified from the literature as contributing to the "beany" off-flavor, and their formation pathways were identified in a legume matrix, pea. Biotechnological ways to improve the flavor by reducing these volat

Effect of pre-treatment and direct contact on rare earth element bioleaching from former Pea Ridge mine tailings by phosphate-solubilizing microbes.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials essential to modern energy, electronic, and defense technologies, yet their supply and extraction is environmentally intensive and geopolitically complex. Biohydrometallurgy using phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) offers a promising low-impact mineral processing scheme, though mechanistic understanding of microbe-ore interactions remains limited. Five PSM strains were used to examine REE bioleaching from monazite-rich mine tailings obtained from the Pea Ridge deposit in Missouri, USA: Gluconobacter oxydans, Paraburkholderia fungorum,

Microbial contamination control mechanism in lipid production using distillery wastewater and oleaginous yeast - Antimicrobial compounds in wastewater as a double-edged sword.

Microbial contamination and the high expense of sterilization are the key factors limiting the application of resource recovery in processes such as producing lipids (can be converted to biodiesel via transesterification) from wastewater. This study was conducted to study the succession of contaminating and indigenous microorganisms, analyze the mechanism and propose a control strategy for undesirable microorganisms in the non-sterile lipid production process using distillery wastewater and oleaginous yeast. In the early stage, indigenous microorganisms (Pichia, Saccharomyces, Acetobacter and

Response of Wild Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) to Microbial Volatiles.

The olfactory cues used by various animals to detect and identify food items often include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by food-associated microorganisms. Microbial VOCs have potential as lures to trap animal pests, including insect crop pests. This study investigated microorganisms whose VOCs are attractive to natural populations of the spotted wing drosophila (SWD), an invasive insect pest of ripening fruits. The microorganisms readily cultured from wild SWD and SWD-infested fruits included yeasts, especially Hanseniaspora species, and various bacteria, including Proteobacteria

Understanding the biological role of PqqB in Pseudomonas stutzeri using molecular dynamics simulation approach.

Phosphate solubilization is an important and widely studied plant growth promoting trait exhibited by many bacteria. Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), a redox cofactor of methanol and glucose dehydrogenases has been well established as essential for phosphate solubilization. PQQ operon has been well studied in growth promoting rhizobacteria like Pseudomonas spp., Gluconobacter oxydans, Klebsiella pneumoniae, etc. However, the role of PqqB is quite ambiguous as its functional role has been contradicted in many studies. In the present study, we selected Pseudomonas stutzeri - a well-known P solubi

Reorganization of a synthetic microbial consortium for one-step vitamin C fermentation.

BACKGROUND: In the industry, the conventional two-step fermentation method was used to produce 2-keto-L-gulonic acid (2-KGA), the precursor of vitamin C, by three strains, namely, Gluconobacter oxydans, Bacillus spp. and Ketogulonicigenium vulgare. Despite its high production efficiency, the long incubation period and an additional second sterilization process inhibit the further development. Therefore, we aimed to reorganize a synthetic consortium of G. oxydans and K. vulgare for one-step fermentation of 2-KGA and enhance the symbiotic interaction between microorganisms to perform better. Microbial D-xylonate production.

D-Xylonic acid is a versatile platform chemical with reported applications as complexing agent or chelator, in dispersal of concrete, and as a precursor for compounds such as co-polyamides, polyesters, hydrogels and 1,2,4-butanetriol. With increasing glucose prices, D-xylonic acid may provide a cheap, non-food derived alternative for gluconic acid, which is widely used (about 80 kton/year) in pharmaceuticals, food products, solvents, adhesives, dyes, paints and polishes. Large-scale production has not been developed, reflecting the current limited market for D-xylonate. D-Xylonic acid occurs n

Dynamic changes in microbial communities during sweet flour sauce fermentation and their correlations with physicochemical properties and volatile compounds.

Sweet flour sauce is a traditional fermented condiment in China, known for its distinct sweet and savory flavor profile. During the fermentation process, the dominant bacterial genera were Ralstonia and Bacillus, and the dominant fungal genera were Aspergillus, Issatchenkia, Clavispora, and Zygosaccharomyces. In addition, total acidity (TA) and amino acid nitrogen (AAN) in different fermentation stages were determined by the acidometer titration method, and reducing sugar (RS) was determined by the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid method. The correlation network revealed TA, RS, and AAN were closely
