A review is given on the Babesia, Theileria, and Anaplasma species infecting sheep and goats. B. ovis is the most important disease agent. It is transmitted by Rhipicephalus bursa, R. turanicus, Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum, and probably by R. evertsi evertsi B. ovis is widely spread in southern Europe, the Middle East, and central Asia. Its geographical distribution in South and East Asia and in Africa is widely unknown. B. motasi obviously represents several nosodemes in separate regions. It is not pathogenic for intact sheep in northern Europe, whereas it is probably more pathogenic than B

A congenital cystic disease of the liver, pancreas, and kidney was diagnosed in a 3-week-old female Nubian goat (Capra hircus). Gross and histologic features were similar to autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease in humans and to previous reports of juvenile polycystic disorders in several animal species. Grossly, the lesions were confined to the liver and pancreas. The liver was severely enlarged and contained multiple fluid-filled cysts of various sizes. There was tortuous ectasia of the extrahepatic bile ducts. In the pancreas, multiple small cysts were disseminated throughout the pa

Pilot studies were done to assess the pathogenicity of a Mycobacterium which had been recovered from the diseased ileum of a patient with Crohn's disease. In four separate studies, pairs of infant goats served as subjects. One of each pair received an oral inoculum of freshly harvested Mycobacterium species strain Linda suspended in cream. A littermate or stablemate which received only cream served as control. Necropsies were done at three, five, six, and 10 months postinoculation. Each of the four inoculated animals developed segmental granulomatous disease of the ileum or ileum and more prox

Paratuberculosis (PTB) or Johne´s disease is a chronic emaciating disease endemic in many parts of the world. PTB is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) and affects primarily ruminants causing considerable economic losses. Goat farming plays a pivotal role in the global economy and represents a major socioeconomic and cultural pillar in the Canary Islands. The archipelago holds the fourth largest goat population in Spain. In this study, 91 Majorera goats. slaughtered in 2024 in Gran Canaria were examined. The ileocecal valve (ICV) and mesenteric (MS) and ileocecal (IC)

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacteria, designated ZY210820T, was isolated from the nasal cavity of a goat with respiratory disease in Yunnan Province, PR China. The strain grew at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0), at 24-39 °C (optimum 37 °C) and with 0.5-2.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1.0% NaCl). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed a separated branch within the family Moraxellaceae with the highest similarity of 93.1% to Acinetobacter kanungonis JCM 34131T. Phylogenomic analysis of 327 single-copy protein sequences revealed that the strain belon

Since the discovery of Scrapie Syndrome in sheep and goats in 1730, there emerged a series of diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru disease and mad cow disease etc. In the research of kuru disease, the American scientist D. Carlteton Gajdusek found a new virus without the characteristic of DNA and RNA, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology in 1976. Since then another American scientist, Stanley B. Prusiner, found a new virus-prion, taking protein as the genetic medium, which was awarded the Nobel prize in physiology and medicine in 1997. The discovery of prion is a great l

Numerous animal species, including the goat, have been evaluated as potential models for human Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD). These models disrupt the vasculature of the femoral head, causing it to collapse, and therefore do not mimic all the clinical patterns of the human disease. Baseline data regarding the weight and femoral length in the growing goat are not available. This study characterized the goat's normal growth for comparison with that of humans. The growth aberrations in the proximal femur created by surgically ablating the capital physis were described and compared with the ab

Sera from 494 humans, 180 cattle, 180 goats and 27 dogs, collected from different regions of Zimbabwe, were examined by indirect fluorescence for antibodies reactive with phase II Coxiella burnetii antigen. Overall, 37% of humans were reactive at a titre of 1/40 or greater, and there was no evidence of age- or sex-related differences in seroprevalence. A review of clinical and epidemiological features of Q fever is presented in order to alert health workers to this infection, which apparently occurs frequently in Zimbabwe even though clinical cases have not been reported. In animals, serologic

The clinical symptoms and pathology in 33 adult sheep and 31 adult goats experimentally infected with Wesselsbron disease virus are described. There was moderate to severe hyperthermia in most animals, but no other clinical signs of disease or deaths were recorded. Eleven sheep and 6 goats were sacrificed for pathological studies at various stages during the febrile response. The macroscopic and microscopic lesions in these cases are described. Microscopic studies revealed that the liver was consistently affected and showed small foci of necrosis. These were sparsely distributed and associated

Goats are susceptible to infection with foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), but their role in the epidemiology of the disease and response to vaccination is poorly understood. In southern Africa, FMDV serotypes Southern African Territories (SAT) 1, 2 and 3 are known to be endemic. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of a pentavalent FMD vaccine in goats against heterologous challenge with a pool of field SAT1 FMDV. Forty FMD sero-negative goats (6-12 months of age) of mixed sexes were randomly allocated to one of five treatment groups: full cattle dose (2 ml), 1/3rd (0.67 ml), 1/6th (0.3

Tulathromycin is a macrolide antibiotic commonly used for the treatment of respiratory disease in food animal species including goats. Recent research in pigs has suggested that the presence of disease could alter the pharmacokinetics of tulathromycin in animals with respiratory disease. The objectives of this study were (a) compare the plasma pharmacokinetics of tulathromycin in healthy goats as well as goats with an induced respiratory disease; and (b) to compare the tissue residue concentrations of tulathromycin marker in both groups. For this trial, disease was induced with Pasteurella mul

Domestic goats are raised for meat, milk and hair production, in herds for rangeland weed control, and as pack animals. Domestic sheep, goats and wild bighorn sheep are all susceptible to a multifactorial pneumonia. We sampled 43 herd goats from 7 herds and 48 pack goats from 11 herds for viral and bacterial serology, parasitology, and Pasteurellaceae microbiology. The goats in this study were in generally good health, although most goats did harbor various pathogens and parasites including several bacteria, specifically Pasteurellaceae, which have been associated with pneumonia in free-rangin

Monitoring of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in Swiss sheep and goats is based on the examination of animals from different sources. In this study, frequencies and proportions of the different diagnoses were compared between routinely submitted sheep and goats, notified scrapie suspects as well as fallen stock. Meningitis/ encephalitis cases were significantly more frequent (OR = 2.2) in the scrapie suspect group when compared to the routine submissions. Metabolic-toxic encephalopathy was seen more frequently within the fallen stock. Rare neurological diagnoses were more frequen

Infectious diseases and parasitic infestations can cause a set of non-specific clinical signs, such as increased body temperature and resting, and a decrease in food intake. These physiological and behavioural changes have an adaptive function facilitating defences against the pathogen and to support immune functions. These so-called' sickness behaviours' can also be used as an early detection tool for disease. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) still causes great economic losses in endemic countries, especially to smallholder farmers. The aim of this study was to determine if behavioural changes in

Zoonotic pathogens are frequently hypothesized as emerging with the origins of farming, but evidence of this is elusive in the archaeological records. To explore the potential impact of animal domestication on zoonotic disease dynamics and human infection risk, we developed a model simulating the transmission of Brucella melitensis within early domestic goat populations. The model was informed by archaeological data describing goat populations in Neolithic settlements in the Fertile Crescent, and used to assess the potential of these populations to sustain the circulation of Brucella. Results

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Leptospira spp. In goats, the productive impact of leptospirosis is not well known and totally unknown in Santa Catarina (SC), Brazil. This study aimed to investigate leptospirosis seroprevalence and its risk factors in goats in the west side of SC. A total of 654 blood samples were analyzed using the microscopic agglutination technique and 35.47% (232) of the animals were seropositives. Except for serogroup Autumnalis, positive samples for all other serogroups were found as follows: Sejroe (Hardjo, Wolffi), Grippotyphosa (Grippoty

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), a tick-borne pathogen in the Orthonairovirus genus of the Nairoviridae family, causes Nairobi sheep disease (NSD), which has mortality rates over 90% in sheep and goats. Historically, NSD outbreaks in East Africa and South Asia have led to considerable economic losses. Although NSDV genomic fragments have been detected in ticks in China, there has been a notable absence of reported infections in local sheep and goats. In this study, we report the first identification of NSDV infection in sheep and goats in China. Through meta-transcriptomics sequencing, NSDV

In Cambodia, goat production and meat consumption are customary among Muslim communities. Recently, goat meat has gained popularity among Cambodians. Goat farmers use a traditional management system, including grazing, requiring minimal labour. The close proximity between humans and animals could increase the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. A serological survey was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of some priority zoonoses and high-impact animal diseases in the Cambodian goat population. A total of 540 samples were collected from goats in six provinces and analysed with commerciall
